Just picked up my helmet for next season from Lee Helliwell at Hellion Designs. He's painted a few lids for me over the years, and once again I'm pleased and impressed. Thought I'd share some pics.

Enjoy,
Shane

I love seeing people who still get custom paint jobs. I wish we could see the pros get back to this more. The lids of the late 80's and 90's were awesome.

How much was the helmet? Or paint? The helmets run $745 and the paint from Hellion is usually about $400+.

As far as deals on the 6D helmets, I'm not sure what can be had. I work part time at a shop, so that helps me out with expenses.

Lee does some great work and I would say he could charge more than he does for his paint. I've been having him paint helmets for me for a while and haven't been disappointed. He does a lot with vinyl graphics so he letters trucks and things of that nature. The helmets he does because it's his roots and he enjoys it. He doesn't advertise and pretty much only works on word of mouth. Worth giving him a call if you're interested in having some work done.

Shane, thanks for the compliments and for putting Hellion Design out there at the shop, to your friends and here on the web. I do try to keep my prices reasonable, and I do love what I do for work.

I don't think I've ever come on here trying to promote myself, other than maybe adding a few pics to a thread someone else may have started. Just to clarify a bit though, four hundred bucks is base, and the paint job I did for Shane was also a thank you for always sending me not only his work but all the work that comes through the shop.

This may be a foolish question, but is there anything in permanent markers (such as the metallic silver ones) that may damage or otherwise compromise the shell of a helmet? I wanted to put my late grandmothers name in Arabic on the back of my lid.

Lee has painted 4 Arai's for me over the years. We've come up with some pretty rad designs and he can lay it down on the helmet!
I have always been a custom paint guy, it is the crown jewel of your kit.

For that price you shoulda went whole hog and sent it to tag.

Keep em comin!
ALL those helmets look sweet!
Makes me think of getting one...
Do they scratch easy or are resistant with clear coat?
I'd like to see a thinly sprayed bed lined helmet...
Maybe I'll try that...

I'm guessing that tag was an autocorrect and should have been TLD? If I'm wrong, I apologize. Paint from TLD adds up quickly. You can see their pricing here: http://www.troyleedesigns.com/paint/pricing.

I'd prefer to support a local business that's supported so many local riders and racers over the years. As well as having a long time relationship of doing business with a guy like Lee. It's a personal choice. I've had Lee paint some lids for me over the years, and I've never been disappointed with the quality of his work. I don't feel as though I'm giving anything up by having him do it over a company like TLD. In fact, I'm gaining some personalized service in that I can call and talk to Lee work out design ideas. TLD does some great work, but they aren't the only ones out there putting out quality paint.

As far as quality goes, they do clear coat over the helmet. At least every helmet I've ever had painted has been clear coated (used a few companies before settling on Hellion). I would make sure you use an experienced helmet painter though and not the local airbrush shop at the mall. There's something to be said for experience working with lids.

I love these kinds of threads. I have one question though. Are there programs and printers that can be used to paint logos so perfect like those? I don't doubt there are people that could pull it off but I was just wondering if there is a cheaterish way to do it like that.
