LocDawg states 99.9% of MX professionals will never see a positive ROI from racing. However, 99.9% of racing families do not over-extend themselves financially in the pursuit of a dream. Home schooling is the exception, not the norm. And overgeneralizing the socio-economic aspects usually results from extreme cases.

Parallels exist between pursuing careers in MX and golf, and neither is immune from the long-term impact of poor decision-making. Golf presents its own set of challenges, and chasing that illusive dream can result in financial hardship and worse. For every guy making good money on the PGA, you have hundreds scratching out a living chasing second and third tier tours and developing questionable habits. Alcoholism and gambling permeates golf at all levels, leaving in their wake broken families and mountains of debt. An over-generalization? Perhaps, but likely in parallel with some of LocDawg's comments.

One point LocDawg makes is true: golf does offer greater long-term financial potential outside the sport than MX. Vastly more people play golf, and it's more socially acceptable, than ripping up terra firma on a dirt bike. Plus golf scholarships exist at all collegiate levels, providing that rare utopia of pursuing an education AND chasing an athletic dream.

That being said: let's step away from stereotyping the MX community. No investment is without risk, and failure can and does occur at every level. And if that's the preferred course of the moto parent, so be it.

I grew up racing MX and I play Golf, what percent is that ?

Also for perspective, On sheer Numbers there is a higher percentage of people who make money racing MX than the percentage of Golfers making money off competitive Golf.

I live with up to 50 different mx families a year, from peewee level to pro level and have done so for over 10 years here in australia. i have also coached well over 10 thousand students and riders like Meghan Rutledge,Luke Styke,Moss boys and a few more from the age of 5 years till now. Every MX family is way different, everthing from morals, education and work ethic.
Lots of aussie riders end up driving earth moving machines at the mines here in aus. Track building is a big art. Mine jobs pay really well in aus, others go back to running the family farm or family bussiness, im sure 1 in 10,000 might run ruin paying for little Jonny but its a very small minority. My own kids raced 2nd hand bike, etc till they got factory rides and both raced AMA.

i dont think you understand the socioeconomics of the types of people who ride motocross and those who play golf. golf families aren't "contractors" who spend all their money so their kid can go race dirtbikes lol. the types of people who play golf are corporate executives, ceos, finance types, etc...im not saying all moto parents are white trash, but the vast majority of them are in my opinion.

sometimes they even have the nerve to come on here and ask for "donations" to help their kid get to the races..lol

being a motocross racer isn't a career, its a waste of money. even if you're a local pro and win everything you might be lucky to break even. there is no long term benefit and the risks aren't worth it..unless you're a RV,RD,JS,etc

i understand your son is a privateer but if you think hes going to make any money or make a long term career out of MX you're sadly misguided. it is unfortunate that the state of the economy is so terrible because if this was 2003 and not 2013 your kid might be able to pocket some money (a livable wage) and have his expenses paid for. if i had a kid who was good enough to race nationals, id give him 2-3 years to make something happen. after that, time to grow up and get a real job

the credit boom is over and this is the new normal.

Hey Locdog-

You are full of shit.

Yeah, maybe you can't "make millions" in racing and these white trash families do risk everything. But I am sure there are just as many drug addicted ex wannabe golf players, baseball players and corporate types you talk of. (even more) You think just because a family dresses nicer or doesn't spend time at the track that they don't mortgage the house out, run up CC debt to send junior to college where they hopefully don't drop out, over party and end up with an average paying job anyway? your generalized idea of a MX family is disrespectful.

Do you even know what kind of financial burden getting to the top of the golf world would be? Not to mention that, statistically, you have way better chance making money in MX than golf. It is safer. I'll give you that.

It takes a dedicated family to race MX, just like anything else in life. A bond is created.

Being a MX racer definitely made my career. I learned communication, ethics, marketing, competition and that hard work truly pays off. I learned sacrifice and can look back now and appreciate what my white trash family did to stay together and chase a dream. I learned about loyalty, I learned life lessons that went far beyond any college education. I learned about respect, that goes even farther now that I am older and can look back and reflect on exactly what sacrifices it took to get me behind the gate.

You can make it real far in the real world taking skills from hitting the track week after week and chasing the checkered flag.

You may not be able to make a million racing dirt bikes, but you can live a lifetime worth of memories and experiences and take the skills IT TOOK TO GET TO RACE TO RACE and be better off than 90% of society. It is a real word education you can parlay into anything when it is over. If you choose to.

Being a motocross racer isn't a waste of money.

My family is one you would generalize as "white trash". I know what you mean. We spent money that should have went to bills on racing. We went without to have fresh tires. We scraped by. I never was "big time" I was a privateer that begged and borrowed to get to the next race, to get my chance. My family was right by my side. Loyalty and respect was absorbed into my veins. The understanding of what my mom did to get me to the races only make me love and appreciate her more.

9 surgeries in 5 years pro. I would't change ANY of it for anything.

The good side? I have done things and been to places that people only wish, memories for 3 lifetimes. I have relationships and a reputation that I still carry with me and I haven't raced since 2001. I make a living now off of the lessons I learned and the time I had as a racer. Racing was my college. I am not in debt on a college education that would have me no further ahead in life now than had I spent thousands to be at school. I am not paying off student loans. I am not living in the corporate life, grinding out a 9-5 and I owe it ALL to the racing "career" I never had.

I left racing at 23. Broke battered and ready to deal with real life head on.

Good parents are good parents, white trash or corporate. MX or golf.

Privateers weren't making money back in 2003 and they won't in 2013 but my advice? Go for it. Travel the world, Make it happen and take it all in. Don't plan on getting rich but make a reputation, create relationships and make it pay off when you step away front the bike.

I'll gladly compare my white trash raised, MX educated, year to date paycheck with your liberal arts college degreed management consultant bottom line any time.....

Again showing your intelligence. It is a man who is unsure of himself that needs to belittle others. Lets talk about being a genius. Can't be too smart on your part to keep coming back here to get a beat down huh?
God help the corporations you provide strategic insight. Again given you want to remain anonymous, I don't believe shit of what you say you do. My point was that you can call your position anything you want, even garbage men are called sanitary disposal experts (guess that went right over your head) So lets leave it at that too....Wink

WOW! Read about all the posts!

Everyone forgets why they started riding their dirtbikes: Fun!

I see LocDawg's point, logically the sport is a financial disaster, but let Mrs Peter's have fun with her kid. Her boy obviously is in good hands, and she is looking out for him while he is chasing his dream.

35smom is having FUN and that is what it is all about!! Damn, I've been racing since the '77 (I NEVER have stopped) and I could have been retired by now with all the money I've blown on bikes and racing. I have 6 dirtbikes now, and have bought over 67 new bikes for me, my kids and wife.

But I wouldn't have lived my life on my terms.....

I think that's what Mrs Peters is doing at the moment and living her life on her own terms. That is L-I-V-I-N-G.......

Great post, that's my opinion as well. Whatever makes YOU AND YOUR FAMILY happy, I think that's what you should do! Obviously as much as you can afford and doesn't burden your family.

LocDawg, I know you won't hear me, but listen. As I enter my 50's and I look back on my life, I have come to the conclusion that had I somehow met myself in my 20's, I wouldn't have liked me very much. I was opinionated (still am, but I keep much more to myself and I think I have developed more tolerance for other people's opinions), knew all about business, politics, and how to raise children. Yes, we spent way too much on racing (never mortgaged the house, but strained our business), but those times with my two oldest boys and my husband were, as it turns out, irreplaceable. They ended quickly and firmly.

What you aren't getting is that what people do with their money is their business. You see, raising children has no business plan. There are no ROI formulas. It is life. You do every day what you think is best. Did I make mistakes? Oh, yeah, bunches. But I would challenge you to listen more, shut your mouth more, and observe. And try not to make as many mistakes in regards to child rearing as what you base your view on. But most of all, don't judge what other people are doing too quickly. You don't know their circumstances or their motives.
I am a little late on this one but, well said. I have a few family members that could learn from this.

LocDawg, you are 100% right. We are all wrong and have misguided views on economics. Thanks to you, I'm quitting MX because I've come to the realization that it's not a good investment and it's way too dangerous. I'm not even going to bother putting my bike up for sale because god forbid a normal white person buys it and turns into white trash like I did.

I even had my brother go out and buy his son a rake so that he could get into the new, upcoming sport, leaf raking. This way he only spends $10 on his son and by next week can already see a return on his investment. Apparently my nephew cried because he said raking leaves wasn't fun, so I called him up and scolded him saying, "Dammit Peter, don't you know that anything in life that's fun is a bad decision? You need to realize that your parents need to get a return on their investment, and unless your Peyton Manning or Lebron James then you aren't going to make any money in fun sports". This is good parenting IMO. I think a lot of you white trash parents should do this same thing to your kids instead of leading them down a path destined for failure.

I'm proud to say that as of yesterday, I left my former "white trash" self to become a successful, respectable, hardworking American like LocDawg. Thanks to him, I have the opportunity to finally get my life back on track.

Locdog time to backpedal and say sorry. You generalizing moto parents as white trash and blue collar workers as dumb make no money losers is not cool.
Why bash people who are trying everything they can to live their dreams? We all fail, even you had "your head stuck up your ass for a couple yrs"

Oh and people who like you for the fact that you give advice to companies and make awesome amounts of money are probably not on a mx board.

Thanks, nice of you to finally say something positive Locdwag! Actually you're right there isn't any business here at all, my first job was a bag boy at wally world. Then once I started racing MX and turned into white trash I quit that job and started growing pot in my living room, but after I saw how easy meth was to cook, I decided to turn my house into a giant meth lab, and I was making over $1000 a week!

However those days are behind me, as like I said in my previous post, I'm trying to get my life back on track. Thanks to you I just landed a job at the El Paso County Correctional Facility as a prison officer. To be completely honest, that was the only other place I could get a job as there isn't any business here like you pointed out. But all in all it's better than nothing I guess!

This is all pretty easy to settle.

I read the first three pages and then jumped to the end. So forgive me if this has been pointed out already.

I see LocDawg is from Texas . And we all know there are some bat shit crazy MFers from TX. Not all Texans are, but it's a big state. So even a small percentage is still a big number.

It looks like LocDawg might just be the leader of the pack for them.
