After reading this AMA rule book, one can see that there is very little production based parts left on a AMA
pro bike racing superx or motox.

You would not say that if you ever got to see a true "Factory Works" bike or how or what they used or did to custom fit each bike to each racer.

The true works bikes were works of art and as you mentioned custom fitted for each rider.
Today's bikes are highly modified production bikes but not nearly as exotic as the works bikes of old.

You might have noticed the rule book cover says SUPERCROSS rule book.

No mention of American motocross on that cover any place.

There's still lots of custom-fitting going on with triple clamps, bar clamps, offset races, fork lugs, peg heights, peg mounts, links, subframes, seats, etc. Then you can get into engine goodies...

Probably more custom fitting going on today that in the full works days since everything is supposed to be the same starting point. I recently had two full works 78 RC500 Honda's sitting next to each other, one from the US and the other from the GP's. Other than an optional tall seat and the riders choice of shocks, the two bikes were identical in every way. Two different series, opposite sides of the world in the heyday of Honda's unlimited win at all costs racing budgets and the bikes couldn't have been more identical if you tried. Tommy Croft went to the MXdN with his personal shocks and his tall seat which were installed on Lackey's GP bike for the race.

Hard to imagine Dungey heading across the pond with a seat and a shock with plans to ride Cairoli's bike.

It's funny you bring that up.

I'd love to see the differences between Cairoli's bike and Dungey's 450. I have a feeling they're very, very different.

Anyone able to confirm this?

But the production rule leveled the playing field making it easier for the true privateer to compete with the factory supported bikes.

The production rule was enacted to keep the cost of racing down for the factory teams. The motorcycle industry was in a steep 5 year down turn in the mid 80's and did not have the outside sponsorship that the factory teams have today.

The only things that have to be production units on a works bike are the frame, swing arm and engine cases. Everything else is fair game.
