Part of the fun is that you can tinker with them for cheap. I found an intake for 55 bucks, I know porting is about 150 from one of the best guys around. So for $1600 I have a bike that's like brand new. It's not like I'm racing the thing, it's just for fun. I also bought a 2006 kx250 that had been ridden for 10 minutes for $3000 back in may. So, for $4600 I have two bikes that are basically new, I can ride for a year, and I maybe lose $1000 at the most. If I don't like the 125, I just sell it and lose nothing. Try doing that with a new bike. Oh, and it's not like I have a thing for Hondas, I was just looking for a cheap 125. In fact, I've only owned one Honda, a 450 when I was still racing all the time and then went back to Suzuki when they came out with theirs.

O.K I suppose so. It's just that we only buy bikes to race with. Not racing to any high standard, but seriously enough. So tinkering with bikes is something we like to do as little as possible (and changing the original engine size is called 'cheating' where we race!).

Well, if u were in the US and raced in AMA district racing, you could race a bored 125 or a 250cc 2 stroke and not be cheating. The 250 would be ready to go racing without tinkering. It would be stock more than competitive with a 250 4 stroke that had to be modded to the hilt.

Hey miedoso, do you guys still do that airbox and reed mod? I'm debating whether to do that or just buy the 05 intake boot? What's the price on it and the turnaround time? Thanks.

Yes, we still do the mod. Just intake portion between carb and bottom end, airbox isn't needed. $50 plus whatever shipping costs etc, and it takes 1 day turnaround. I personally have the 06 and did the mod on that as well. So just going with that intake will not negate the problems the CR's had. The 04 we have found the actual bottom end crank area has a large lip that was suppose to build pressure. That being cut down will also help out. Honda went to that design early and then went back to the open crank area. If you see older bottom ends and then see yours, then jump to the 05 or newer, you will see what I'm talking about. It basically covers the top of the crank almost by 1/2. Very crazy design.

Cool, I'm just waiting on the guy to get back to me today so I can pick it up. When I get it I'll probably ship it out to you. Should I still get the intake or will the stock one work? As far as the crank area lip, is that something I can do myself? Do I have to split the cases?

You will have to split the cases, so I personally wouldn't do it until it's time to do the crank. You may never do it, since that bike should last a long time. It helps, but not enough to tear down the bottom end, just for that. The intake is fine from 04. Just send me the 04 intake and you will be happy. I need the reeds all the way back to the rubber boot that hits the carb. Don't need the carb back. Please ride the bike as it sits first. That way, when you get it back, you will know how much better it is. I'm a FMF fatty person. I've had the SST pipe on one of my CR250s and 04 CR125, and hated it. I gained the top end, but lost everything down low. It wasn't any more top end then the fatty either. So it was a waste. Stock was way better than the SST in my opinion.

I wonder if these ponies really make a difference? I have seen kids on 85 cc bikes running circles around guys on 450s, and very few guys can run a CR125 on full throttle anyway, except maybe on straights.

What does 33 hp on the rear wheel instead of 30 really achive?

I totally accept the explanation that it's a cool thing to do, but I don't buy that B-riders? go faster with aftermarket parts...

Alot of time it isn't the more HP, it is where? For instance, our mod will give mainly the bottom end and mid. Plus gets rid of the Honda wah wah feeling and jetting issues. Same as certain pipes like the fatty compared to the sst, etc. So it's not necessarily the top end HP. More about the ability to keep the power going or match the riders ability to said power. because remember, the CR125, while ran crappy, actually produced good HP numbers on the dyno...
I will note though, 3-5 hp from a 125 is much more noticeable than 3-5 hp on a 450.

I am in the same boat as bd having just picked up a pristine '03 CR125 for a ridiculous price. I owned several CR125's before and have many fond memories of how well they ran and handled. Big dissappointment when I rode the '03 for the first time. It was a lot easier going from a two stroke to a four stroke then back again. The '03 CR is fast but has no low end and way top heavy with too little rake. No way was I going to risk my health riding this thing but then someone suggested a Kouba link to lower the rear end. It really worked and actually made the rear suspension work better. Now if I can get the motor to pull at anything below 10K I should have a super fun backup bike...

Here's one of the emails we got back after the mod.

Note, his brother in laws name was the same as mine :
"Chad (my brother in law) said that his CR has

Since folks seem to be in the mood lately if anybody in the new england area is interested in a 2001 CR125 in good running shape for cheap, I have one.

Sure, you will obviously be able to build something more suitable for each person by shuffling the hp and torque around, and I'm sure it's noticeable and a better bike, but it's still a 125 with that ketcup power ridden in same manner with constant high rpm and clutch abuse.

I totally get this discussion when talking about four strokes since they actually are being driven with torque and less clutch...

Personally I don't think I would reduce lap times with a altered engine, but I'm like a C-rider...

I would argue the additional low end would make me faster. Anytime I make a mistake on the CR 125, I'm fucked. On my YZ 125, Im not hurt as bad. Its not hp, its the power delivery. Plus, the CR 125 (stock 04) is slow.

I bought my 2006 kx250 for $2300 and the guy only rode it around his yard with his daughters. If you look at my pictures on my profile you will see just how clean this thing was. I could have easily turned around and sold it for around $3500 but i opted to ride it and have a blast.

If you're going to spend the money, consider sending it to someone to have it ported and bored to 134, and get the head milled.

For $250 you can probably just about buy a brand new cylinder from Service Honda or another on-line place.
