1974 KX 450 - Damn!

Everything is original right down to the grips and tires. Purchased new in 1974, the original owner rode it once and was scared too death. He parked it in his garage and it never saw daylight again.

Sold today $5323

I raced one of the first ones to hit the Kawi dealer. What a beast of a machine. That's when I was still a Husky dealer. The Kaw dealer came into the shop and asked if I'd like to race it the maiden voyage. How could I resist.

78 was the first red engine, no??

Tim, I raced one (excellent restoration) last Feb in a Vintage race up in Phx. Enjoy the memories....whatever you do, when someone offer to let you ride one, pass it up. It'll ruin it for you! lol...

Wow! What a find!

btw, yes, the first red-engined CR250 was 1978.

There was no 1977 CR250. 78 model came out early on in 77 though. Funny thing, you hardly see a 1978 CR250 but you see buttloads of 79 models.

I was riding it at the end of '77....in 78, I went to Maico. Early '77 I was Husky supported, but the Honda was a zillion times better.....then I got on the '79 Maico 490 and all bets were off. Come to think of it, that was my fav bike until I got on any 450 4 stroke.

Maico didn't make a 490 in 1979.... They had 400 and 450 Magnums but no 490s until 80 or 81.....Think the 1980 was the Alpha but I know the 1981s were 490 Spyders

Nice bike, neat find.
On the Maico, The 80 model was a 440 Mega, also available as a 400, the 81 was the ubiquitous 490 Mega 2 ,some were built as 450's but not featured in brochures, '82 was the first single shock effort, the "Alpha 1 "model, '83 was the completely redesigned ,reed-valved ,gear drive primary motor,"Spider" , available as a 4 speed and in a 5 speed "Sand Spider "model.

Anyone ever see a 79 KX 250 isn't it true Kawi never made one that year? They only made a 78 and skipped 79?

Thanks for the Maico model clarification. I had a trick Wheelsmith Darrel Schulz replica 79 450, a 76 AW400, and an early 75 400GP (or 74 and a half) that was a four speed and was always in the right gear. The tuner at Honda of Piqua trimmed some off the exhaust skirt of the piston and it ran great.

The Wheelsmith 450 was unbelievably fast.....man I miss that bike......

440 - I stand corrected. Might have been an 80'. That was the one I crashed (and retired on) after the 1980 St Pete Winter Am. Got back started in 1996 in the beginner class and cleaned out by MIDDLEAGEDLOSER on this board!

Funny the AW models came identified as AW400 and AW440 but the 79s were labeled as 450 Magnums.

76-77 AW's ( Adolph Weil replica) were the predecesors of the Magnum models of 78-79. The Magnum engine design was used from 78 till 82 in the MC (motocross) models and was also used in the 83 GS (enduro) version.

I misspoke in my earlier post , the 81 Mega was also built as a 400 , not a 450.
