Hi, my name is Brandon. Two weeks ago I was doing a wheelie going about 30mph and all of a sudden went back too far, got whiskey throttle, and completely landed wrong on my hip. Worst pain I've ever felt. Anyways, it resulted in an ambulance ride, and surgery. They said I fractured it about an inch underneath the ball that goes into your pelvis. I was just wondering how this will affect me long term. I'm currently 15, and was just starting to race again. I can't put weight on it for 12 weeks. Just wondering if anyone else has went through this. I know it's not too common in younger people. This was my first major crash.

No Brandon those kids in Baltimore aren't THAT cool! Jake has had 5 broken arms and last was a fractured hip, he was only out for about 6 or 7 weeks. The little numb nuts didn't think it was that bad and rode for another 2 weeks and did 20 miles on his bike along with longboarding. Then sat on a bucket to help me with a top end and when he stuck his leg out the pain hit him so hard he fell off the bucket and cried like a girl, go figure! That's when we took him in for an x-ray, he was 15 at the time (about 6 months ago.

When I was 13 I crashed and broke the ball part of my hip. Actually, when you are younger its called a "growth plate" until it fully develops.....usually around 18ish. Anyway, I broke it and had 3 or 4 surgeries over the years because of the blood supply being damaged. I finally had to have a total hip replacement when I was 27 because it got so bad. My advice is to do everything the doctors tell you and don't put any weight on it until they say its ok.

on the left is the hip i broke in october 2002 10-2-02 to b exact, i was 39, it was a mx accident at Jolly Roger mx in New hampshire, it healed up fine i went snowboarding on 2-3-2003, and they let me keep the screws and plates , i still got them, disregard the screw in the tailbone or the plates in the front those are from another racing miscalculation

so any way dont worry about it your 15 you will be ok

What Torco said, it's a pretty low blood flow area and can take forever to heal, if ever. I destroyed my hip and hip socket(acetabulum) in 06 at 34 years of age. Luckily I didn't need a replacement yet, but the doc said it is just a matter of time until I will. If you have to wait a year to ride, listen to your doc, you are 15 and if you heal it right, hopefully you won't have any lasting effects. If you "F" it up by not allowing it to heal properly it will haunt you for the rest of your life. Here is a new angle of mine ( I am sparing everyone the penis x raySmile

Also here is what saving an ACL looks like (same crash) my CTI 2 kept my knee safe out there Smile

How is it? Mobility? Pain etc... My range is greatly reduced and I would love to have it work again while I'm still in the 40+ class Smile
Do you know how much it cost? I am guessing my insurance won't cover mine since it's a pre existing injury and my last insurance company that I had when I initially injured it stiffed me on the last $60,000 of my bill then dropped me a few months later.

I go back to the doctor tomorrow for my first checkup. Hopefully I can take a picture of the X-rays and I'll post them. I'm wondering if I happened to fall in a year or so what would happen?

And if it makes a difference I had an "intracapsular fracture" in medical terms. I also forgot to mention they fixed it with 3 stainless steel screws.

Once it's healed completely it should be just like new.

Like DirtySmile, I fractured my acetabulum but I also dislocated my hip as well. My doc has said anywhere from 12-18 months to feel "normal" again. My worry is down the road...they say that I will eventually have to have my hip replaced, but I am done with moto. I can't risk getting hurt becuase of my job. It's gonna be really hard to chase after criminals with broken limbs. Good luck to you in your recovery. And whatever they tell you to do in therapy, do it x 10.

How long do you think it will take to completely heal? I would think 6 months to a year.

So what kind of protection does he use now? Those shitty hip pads in pants don't do a thing.

Is this Brandon as in The Brandon? Like Brandon's first race Brandon? You're a legend bro! Heal that hip up and start shooting your races again.

I had a complete dislocation of my right hip in 2004. Broke the femural head in half with screws and plate to fix. I was very aggressive with my physical therapy in which the only thing that took forever to recover from was the range of motion. Do what you can in moving the joint without impact while taking calcium in any way you can. I used an exercise bike with the seat lowered to run the joint as full motion as I could. I was cleared to ride at the 6 month mark and rode the very next day and I won't lie, the first few crashes are scary as hell after coming back. The thought of going through that again will haunt your mind for a little while but it WILL subside. After a few crashes you'll realize that you can fall down and get up again not having to worry about your hip or the memory of that pain anymore. It will give you some pain in normal day to day life as you get older but it isn't horrible nor will it stop you from riding.

Keep you chin up kid and keep working on getting back on that bike. Life ain't over at all for ya.

Cheers,
Ryan

Much better now! You'll be as good as new in no time. Like Ryno said above, you need to get your head back in the game without the worry of getting hurt again. Don't ride scared and on the days when you just aren't feeling it, pack up and go home. It's funny, I am fine when I am on the bike but sometimes when I lay in bed at night I have horrific visions of destroying my body. I don't know if it's some type of PTSD suffered during my wonderful stay in the ER at Murietta then at Riverside County Med center. They were some dark days. I was down there alone completely loaded on Di lauded and had to go through three big surgeries with no one there. They were making me sign waivers that I couldn't even read I was so out of it. The worst one was when they told me I needed a blood transfusion and that there were risks of picking up disease "Sign here". They put three bags of someone else's blood in me. I was so happy when I finally got transferred to my home hospital in Oregon.

Is the leg he fractured the hip on shorter than the other at all? They were telling me it could always happen, but it might not.

I'm waiting for Jonon to chime in on this one. He had some crazy shoes/boots because his one leg was so much shorter.

They were saying if mine ends up being shorter it would only be by about a half inch at most.

Thanks man! About how long was it before you were back on the bike? And what do you do for safety precautions now?

Your break looks identical to mine. I have a pic of my hip as my avatar. I broke it about 4 years ago. I whiskey throttled it out of a whoop section off a berm, and the bike kind of spun me off and I flew through the air like a helicopter blade and landed on the backside of a berm behind it about 30 feet away. It was pretty scary. Grateful I landed on my side and not on my head. It was about a 4-5 month recovery for me, but I had a great doctor that is known in throughout the entire Bay Area (in CA) for how good he is with hip and knee injuries. It wasn't the fastest recovery, but it was a full recovery which is what you should be more concerned about. I had three screws put in just like you. It was very painful, but they gave me some very strong pain meds so it was never unbearable. Good luck in your recovery man. It's really important that you're patient with it and follow your doctors orders. It will be tough, but definitely worth it in the long run.

Hey man thanks for the info! I'm in no huge rush to get back on the bike, and I know it will be a huge mental battle. I'm going to do exactly as the doctors say, and not risk anything. As you could imagine, for a highschool student who's first major crash is a broken hip, I was pretty scared, but I'm confident in recovering and know I can with the grace of god. Quick question. What do you protect your hips with now? And was your leg shorter than the other at all?

I went in for my 6 month checkup and the doc said "umm... I think you are good to go" and I went riding the very next day. I didn't do anything different in my riding gear at all. I will admit I was a little gun shy for the first few times and when I finally had a little crash I remember going down thinking "oh god not again" but after I got up and realized I was fine then things progressed easily back to where I was before the crash. At the time I broke my hip I was in my late 20's and an accomplished rider already. I am 37 now and still race all the time in the Vet Pro in both MX and Off Road races. It can be done and your mind will get better about everything as time progresses. Just know, this injury IS NOT AT ALL the end of your riding!!!
