Now, Low and behold I'm about to hop off of my trusty 2001 yz250f and I'm looking for a new bike

I rode a 2012 yz250f which felt amazing. But I'm up in the air. Anybody have advice on selection of a new bike? I mean I'm 24 and this is going to be my first big purchase.

Feel kinda noobish asking this.. But I honestly don't know were to begin with these new bikes.

also when is the 2014 250f shootout coming out.. Ive searched google high and low and cant find squat.

I rode a KTM 250F, it was pretty amazing. I'm still not a huge 4-stroke fan, but you won't hear me say that they're not great bikes. The EFI throttle response is amazing and the chasis/suspension are awesome.

I rode a '13 KTM 125, 250, 350 and 450, all were good, the 450 was probably my favorite, but I couldn't see myself riding over and over without it getting a little big and bulky feeling.

If you're asking me, any '05+ RM, CR or YZ 250 smoker, or any '07+ KTM 250.

If you're set on a 250F, you can't go wrong with any of the big five brands, really. Unless you're looking for some specific characteristics, I suggest you shop around and find a good reliable shop that will give you a good price on the bike and parts. Deals are starting to show up for left over bikes.

To ensure you achieve complete Nirvana, and spend your money wisely, bow your head and chant with me. 2 strokes, no valves. 2 strokes, no valves. oooooohhhhhhhmmmmmmm. Cross legged is optional, but you're 24. You should be good.

I'm sure you could score a 12 or 13 YZF for CHEAP and they are stone reliable with amazing suspension, and no efi. With what you are just coming off riding, this will feel factory! 4 strokes for dummies these bikes.

This is what i was thinking...But I'm wondering if the new latest and greatest would be better to roll with?

As for the guy asking if im set on a 250f yes... But I'm also open to two-strokes too.. The last one i rode was a 2006 rm250 and that thing was a rocket and just overall badass.

I'm am indefinitely not looking for a 450...scared the shit out of myself last time i rode one.

Any of the new 13s would be fine, you don't have to get a 14.

Honestly you really cant go wrong with anything if its brand new. Just make sure that you read up on maintenance specs and timeframes no matter what bike you get. I would advise against a used 250f unless you know the person you are buying it from really well, and know the bike has been well taken care of. My personal preference would be a clean, used 250 2 stroke. An 06-current YZ250 is an awesome bike, theres plenty of parts available, and they are cheap and easy to keep running in top condition.

Anyone worth their salt on this board will cop to the fact that a 250F is a billion times easier to ride than a 250 smoker, as awesome as a 2 stroker is. Unless you have experience on a 2 stroke, and some semblance of fitness, the F is plain easier to ride. The thrill factor of the 2 smoker is cool no doubt, but the 250F, as I said before, is a motocross for dummies bike. A 450 is a different beast however....back away from the horsepower table....

Pick your poison and enjoy!

Pssssst...

Word around the Dyno-Room is the New Yamaha makes Crazy-Good power out of the Box.

On the other-hand: I've ridden the '14 KTM 250SXF...it hauled the mail, too.

Me? If they're still giving away '13 KXFs for $1500 off...? There's my money. I'm Guessing they're around $5K out the door?

Last; but, not least...a KTM 250SX is Amazing (Tho, I'd "SX" a 300XC).

Whatever you do...Good Luck!

Dirtbikes are like computers imo, as soon as you get the newest and greatest a new bike will be out in 8 months give or take. find a smoking deal on a left over and dont be scared to ask for discounts on hard parts ect....

It looks like a KTM parking lot at my track.

What are you doing with it? If your sole purpose is racing(a lot), then yes I would probably go for a 2013-14 bike. But if you're like me and mostly ride practice days and occasionally enter a race, I would save my money and go for a 2010-2012 bike. It's around 10 years newer than what you have, and you could probably sell yours and put $1000-$1500 with it and pick one up. New bikes depreciate to quick for me, but I don't need the latest and greatest. I just ride for fun. You're in CA, so prices may be different, BUT If I were in your shoes, I would sell your bike for $2,000, put around $1,500 with it and pick up something similar to these:

2011 KX250F - $3,100

2012 KX250F - $3,950

2010 CRF250R - $3,700

Those look like they have quite a few hours on them. One failure and you will have paid more than a new one.

all the new 250f's are rad, i would probably go with the YZ if i were buying a four stroke.

but i wouldn't.

so my advice is to get a new KTM 250 and put the 300 kit on it. will be more than competitive in the 450 class, super easy and fun to ride, and just a badass ride.

then again, get what you want and have fun on it. 2, 4, don't fuckin' matter. at the end of the day, it's your money.

Why would anyone ever buy a 250f? Except maybe the once-a-month trail rider? They are slow, heavy, break down alot, cost way too much to purchase and fix. If the 450 is too much, (try some throttle control),then the 250 2-stroke is the only way. Of course, if you got plenty of money, the kx250f will help lighten the load for you! Oh yeah, why would anyone ever buy a 250f? I'm sure you could find a Ford Pinto if your into that sort of thing.
