Mine did the same thing. After installing the fmf it back fired and popped like crazy. I followed the instructions all except going back and tightening bolts to the head. Went back and tightened those three bolts and it was perfect.
Hope it's something simple like that for you. I just got in a hurry!

its too lean.

Needs a remap - couple the t4 with a pipe and it gets worse

Your best bet is to call FMF with this issue.
Bike is pretty new so there wont be a whole lot of us here with any knowledge to really drop.

Correct
90% of the time its an ex leak.
The more severe the popping the closer the leak is to the exhaust port.
Check the ex flange at the rear of the cylinder.

Well put a rich map on and it stop. the bad thing though power is super mellow

First of all why are you wasting your money on VP? I have the 4.1 FMF slip-on on and run 93 octane pump gas with the aggressive map I found online and mine runs perfectly. It pops very rarely. I changed the map and I am very happy with it. I am pretty sure the bike is too rich from the factory not lean.. You can get pops being too lean or too rich.

Do you really need more power out of these new 450's ??? you animals... !

I have an 08 Yamaha with a pipe too but that motor / pipe combo was super mellow.

That's still double the price of pump gas anywhere. Run pump gas and change the map to the aggressive map that MXA posted in 2010 (google it)...

Why exactly is the race gas worth the extra $4? Your engine was not developed or tuned for race gas in its current form, you understand that..right?! You're not benefiting by running it..

What did that map do? Where did you find it?

It's 93 octane, unleaded and no ethonal. That's what the owners manual says to run. Plus is smells good.

Its either lean or an exhaust leak I suspect.

As for pump gas, I will rather pay the extra for race gas with no ethanol. Ethanol has its place in life, it should be in your cocktail and not your dirt bike.

I agree with yamiguy51. I wouldnt put ethonol gas in my bike either.the t4 is werth every dime! And the u4 is even bettet, almost like adding a pipe to it. I run it in my 13 450sxf. Very impressive stuff

I road a 14 yz450 . It was all stock, and popped on decel pretty bad. Bike was alsome though.

About a year or so...ago...

A very well known Pipe (& Engine...back in his Elsinore glory days) Builder mistakenly put Race Gas in a Test Bike that was on the Dyno...KX250F...injected...BRAND NEW & STOCK...

Over 3 HP gain.

Also, any Genius that has a late model MXer and hasn't tested Race Fuels? Well, if you haven't tested them...well...then you should STFU; because, YOU ARE WRONG.

T4 versus typical pump fuel?
The T4 is consistent. Is kept in a sealed environment, is purpose made for performance, doesn't have water in it, isn't made to the Lowest Possible Standard & it has more Energy.

I'd try U4.4...I've really good luck with it. A little lead is a good thing...

Some ppl told me lead is hard on the fuel pump/filter any truth to this? How much is the 4.4?

who knows, but i doubt it would be an issue. the only time lead is a real problem if you are using an O2 sensor connected to an EFI box.

for a four stroke , unless its really highly tuned i think a lack of ethanol is more important then the presence of lead.

on my RM144, its gotta be 112 leaded all the way.

I've run leaded & unleaded Race Fuels on bikes with all the sensors...never a problem.

I left a full tank of U4.4 in my TM 450 (injected) for 6 months and it didn't hurt anything.

Okay makes sense..thought you were running a higher octane race fuel..and agree with you on the smell..thankfully we have a gas station close to home that sells ethanol free gas..
