You're always tough to beat.

The planets basically need to align for any other team to win the MXdN - as they did last year at Lommel. Few other teams can field a team strong enough to contend for the overall in the first place, and when they do they can't afford any bad luck.

Lommel was probably the first MXdN for years that one of the other favoured teams managed to come through the Sunday unscathed while Team USA encountered a bit of bad luck for a change.

Herlings will probably never win an MXdN
Cairoli will probably never win an MXdN
Roczen probably won't win an MXdN again (Germanys team for 2013 is Ken Roczen, Max Nagl and Dennis Ullrich... who is currently lying 21st in MX1 and the US equivalent of Les Smith)
Paulin & Musquin could win if Frossard eventually manages to stay injury free for once and regains his 2011 form.
Desalle could win if the MXdN was held on sand again and all three bikes make it to the end of the moto's unlike last year.

It won't be the first time that a stellar team is assembled with little to no chance of victory for anyone else.
My question, is this team better than what almost was the best team ever had RC not gotten hurt that year. I would have been RC, JS and Poto. That would probably have been the fastest team ever assembled. I'm just curious if this team RV, RD and ET might not be even better?

RC says a lot that the current crop of riders are going faster than ever before. With that being said, I think Carmichael is as classy and as humble as they come. I don't see him stating that he would still be dominating, even if I think so myself.

The only bad thing about the Des Nations is the luck side of it. Also, some riders do amazingly well at the Des Nations. Look at Roczen. I am not a big fan of his but his Des Nations rides have been spectacular, EVERY year. Every year he comes out and seems to find an 8th gear and runs with and beats the best in the world while he is on a 250. If Tomac can keep his pace up, I feel that he could beat EVERYONE, but this will be the first time he has raced the event and in the past, he has had less than stellar races for no apparent reason. Also, if one guy can have the craziest bad luck, it is Dungey. I can't count on my hands the number of times that he has had the craziest/dumbest things happen to him that he has no control over. To name a few, gas running out, bike not starting, battery not working, chain derailing, leatt breaking and the list goes on and on. I like Dungey A LOT more than Villopoto but for as fast and consistent as Dungey is, somethine crazy happens a lot. I'd say Villopoto is our only REAL ace in the hole. No matter where he starts, he is coming to the front with a pace that rarely can be matched and he never seems to have the crazy incidences that Dungey has.

With all of that being said, I hope Team USA goes out and beats the ever living brakes off of the other teams AND the world. Show them that last year was a fluke and won't be repeated.... Until they rig another race at a bottomless pit of sand Wink
That 8th gear you speak of is Roczen back riding in Europe most guys are faster in they're in your own backyard,look at Baggett,insanely fast at home and lapped at both MXdN

It may come as news to some but those sand tracks are common in Europe,there's no rigging going on,most were super confident of a USA whitewash anyway,although I think this year if they don't get the job done they want their asses severely kicked!

Baggett won his qualifier in France in 2011, so the "lapped" thing doesn't quite fit his performance and ability.

That is a good question, I guess it depends on the track? That '06 team would have been the MXdN team for the ages, I still get frustrated seeing RC come down the hill at Glen Helen with one arm on the bars.

But to try and answer your question, I guess I'd put my money on '06? They both have Villopoto, so might as well take the team that also had Carmichael. Both of those teams sure have A LOT of AMA championships, that's for sure Smile

I agree. He knows he's the GOAT, he doesn't have to talk any kind of talk about what he's done, whether he thinks the current crop is really at a higher pace than he was capable of going or not.

I always felt like MC was kind of defensive of his title as "king"...
