So here is a big hint as to how much you get paid: No more than is necessary for you to show up and do your job.

The privateers keep showing up and chase the dream. When the gates can't be filled, the pittance will be adjusted accordingly.

What is the difference to a spectator if you are being lapped once or twice, you are not in the hunt. Thinking otherwise is a lot like the wmx, a handful of vocal family members, but outside of them, few followers.
Guess what homeboy, every pro privateer out there has a home track and if you think only a few followers are pulling for them, you have never been to a national I guess.
Again, riders union is a solution here and if they (the riders) don't come together on this, it will never change.

You and my son can get pissed at me all day long, I just call it as I see it. Sometimes you have to be cruel to be kind, and if you can't be kind, at least be honest. Maybe all those fans that are pulling for them should kick in fifty or a hundred bucks a week. Somehow the room gets silent.

It is a wonderful thing to be able to chase your dream, just don't think you can demand someone else will pay for it.

Unfortunately that IS what MX has become.... Between 'pro' riders not having insurance, then asking for hand outs when they get hurt, to riders asking for money to get to the next race....

The surfing analogy, I don't see a lot of parallels to the challenges we have. Waves are free. The ocean is free. There is no rent on the North Shore, no upkeep of that part of the sea, no liability exposure, no property taxes, etc... Surfing is a comparatively cheap sport to any form of racing, and it's probably sponsored by Pac-Sun, or Quiksilver, or Billabong, or whatever -- they don't make motorcycles and they haven't been hurt by the economic slowdown of the last four years.

I wish I could snap my fingers and double the purse, but I can't. I wish that people like huck didn't think the sport were dying, because it's not. But it's not perfect for everyone, and it will never be perfect for the privateers. I was one so I know how difficult it can be. I am making the best fixes I can to this series, but not everyone will agree, and that's fine. It will just make us work harder to get it right. I have found that the best way to fix a problem is to simply go to work.

MX Sports
While I do agree they don't have to pay for waves, they do have HUGE permits to pay, the liabilities are enormous (you think people don't drown?) Why are you mentioning property taxes? You don't pay property taxes or rent for Elsinore!! They sometimes travel to spots that are almost impossible to get to and have to set up "shop" and take daily to these spots. You have no idea what they go through to do what they do. I can go on and on here, but it's obvious you have no idea what goes on at a major surf contest. One that lasts up to 10 days.

How you can say that they haven't been hit by the economy? That is plain ignorant! Do you think surfboards fall out of the sky? Yes, it is much cheaper than mx, but there are many similarities.

Maybe you should look at how the other X sports bring in big sponsors. Afterall, there are many that cross over: Volcom, Fox, DC, to name a few. If they can do it, MX should be able to do it too. Don't let the cost of a motorcycle hold you back, your aren't paying for the motorcycle, the mechanic, etc... the riders are.

Well maybe you should rub your eyes for a bit, because the last time I looked, the riders were the 'show'! Without the dream of a rider, none of this exist, so quit trying to piss in everyone's cereal...

Maybe you should get together with Huck-a-buck and you 2 can tell Nam stories and how the world owes you a favor.

Perhaps what could be done is to set up a system of "privateer lockboxes" which could be at each supercross or pro national.

They could be professionally monitored and distribute out all donations according to a set distribution schedule. The fans could throw in what they feel is fair. Say a ten percent contribution of five bucks each at an sx = 60,000 fans / 10 = 6000 times five bucks = $30,000

Just be straight with the contributors, provide accountability, and a straight forward distribution schedule.

Austin, we're not the ones whining about not being able to achieve our dreams, or the fact that our job/hobby doesn't pay the bills.

Let me ask you....who seems more like 'the world owes you a favor'?
And "Nam stories"? What does that mean? Way to insult a generation of people that sacrificed so much...

Easy on the Nam comments, I missed it by a few years but most of those guys could still chew and spit out most of you entitlement based pussies. If you feel someone is entitled, open your wallet not your mouth. There is no equal opportunity moto commission.

I do not race for a living anymore, but I lived through the days of not enough money for my effort from the AMA purse. I keep it simple and speak from a no money privateer status.
Privateers should not have to count on handouts to survive in a series that host the best riders in the country.

There is a ton of talent out there that you will never see, because they do not have the funding. So why not have honest pay for a guy that has put in his work?

Fair enough, I appreciate your good intentions. I just believe your solution is unworkable. The union idea has been beat to death on this forum, as well as the growth of the sport, etc.

That isn't to say I don't admire the work effort of a Weston Pieck, Cole Thompson, etc. It just wouldn't do anyone any good to chase an unworkable solution.

I will quote myself here, but I don't perceive this as a handout. To me, I would throw some cash in because I want to see those guys out there. As you may have picked up from my grumpy old man disposition, I would be pissed if someone told me I owed it to them.

Back to the issue of Purse Money:
All racers that make a main event have a role in the racing event.
Are the factory riders the bigger draw from most fans perspective?...probably yes...although outdoor MX does have more of a core fan support and I believe follow more racing(racers) rather than the casual SX fan.
Do factory guys and well salary supported riders deserve purse money? Of course they do.
So you can't just eliminate the top guys from purse money only because they have good paying contracts.
So all the racers do have importance.
The top 20 guys are probably the main highlight, and with fields getting deeper in talent that number may actually go closer to 25-30, especially in the 450 class. ..
So perhaps a percentage scale could help cover a few more expenses for the NON-salaried riders racing.
Example: 70% of the purse gets divided equally from 1-20 place....25% of the purse gets paid evenly to 21-30th. and the remaining 5% goes to 31-40th place.
I believe the payouts are greater in the 450 class than the 250 class, so those percentages would have to be applied to each class separately.
Just a thought.

This is a NO WIN situation for DC. I am truly surprised he even gets on here and makes posts. People don't even read the previous posts before making their own uneducated assumptions, much less have an idea of what it costs a track owner(not promoter-do you know the difference)) to hold an event of this magnitude.

DC already said the track owner pays the purse which is set by the promoter(Mx Sports). MX Sports has the means set up to pay the riders through the AMA, which the AMA charges MX Sports for that service along with other services they provide. Mx Sports provides this service as part of their agreement with the track. Now when DC mentioned the tracks were being charged another $4k this year, some seemed outraged they charged the tracks more money to be part of the series.

In reference to the above post: DC(Mx Sports) said that the track owners keep the spectator entry money Now this genius with the last post that knows all of the track owners expenses to run a national is saying the tracks are making so much money they can pay more. Next time you go to a national(if you have ever been to one), take a look at the property, structures, the heavy equipment, the staff, and how many things are going on at any given time. The porta potty bill would be enough to make you shit. Now that is just the visible stuff. It is mind boggling the amount of work and manpower it takes.
.
Learning the difference between a promoter and a track owner might be where some of you may want to start, because from reading some of these posts they obviously do not know the difference.

I am not sure what it cost to have the National televised, but if you ever get a chance to be there the day before( perhaps for amateur racing) take a look at the TV trucks(semis) location and the miles of cable buried all throughout the track going to all the different cameras bringing all the coverage to us. So, since the sport does not have a large enough viewing audience to have a TV station pay money for the coverage, MX Sports needs to foot the bill. So this means they need an other department in MX Sports to handle getting advertisers to help offset the costs of the TV coverage they are providing for you and I.

Basically there is a lot more to it than most people realize. Next time you go to a race, take a close look around you, and I think you will have a new appreciation for the promoters and track owners.

Just my 2 cents worth. Moto On!
Here we go again with another brainiac spouting off about how nobody is making any money, but doesn't have any idea how much anything costs. Your going to tell me its a break even deal too huh?

Elsinore is rumored to have dumped a million bucks into their place, do you think they did that, cause there is no money to be made.
Guess you know all about the Pala fiasco?

Dumping money into something does not automatically make it a good investment, and can be especially dangerous when there is passion involved.

It's people with close minds like you who make it so that we don't get new sponsors.

I already proposed what we should do in my response, if you read it.

15. Broc Tickle (Suzuki) 14-15

That means Desalle made 34.48 less than what he would have in 2008 and Stribos made 24.42 more.

The 30th fastest guy in the U.S. after racing the whole series will not be able to buy himself a new bike. I've made a 150 bucks playing in a softball tournament. Something is way wrong for a guy who can make a main at a National, less than double what my 43 year old ass made playing softball for a day.

Has MX grown over the past five years? How much? I remember Glen Helen getting 20 to 25,000 people for the Nationals and that was over five years ago. Seems the tracks are doing those same numbers today. What's different at the tracks now than five years ago? I see stadium seating, and no infield viewing areas, it looks like crap on TV. Other sports they try and get the fans as close as possible to the field or court, MX has pushed everyone away. Lots of dead spots on TV, looks like nobody shows up. You used to see people lining the fences, both sides, cheering on their rider, now we see a big hill with a lotta people sitting down.. sad face.

Live TV isn't bringing anyone in. On a Saturday afternoon in the summer, who is sticking around to watch MX? Even the die hards here say the DVR it. How many years is it gonna take before TV actually buys the product? MX has been paying to be on TV for a long time now, I would think, if the TV networks thought they could make money on it, they would of scooped it up by now. In a time where less and less people are watching TV at a set time.

TV has changed a bit, people used to plan their TV watching time when a certain show would come on, now with Netflix, the Internet, tablets, and cell phones all having TV programming, you don't have to sit around and wait for your favorite show to come on. Your show will be there when you want it. Ditch live TV, put it live on the net and just pay to have it on Sunday night. People are home on Sunday nights. With all the cable sports channels we have now, I would think someone would be interested in a Sunday night show, and mx wouldn't have to foot the entire bill.

Motocross is a sport that you have to pay to participate, it is not a poor mans sport and only a very few will make money at it. Motorsports in general are expensive to be involved with and most people are smart enough to know that just because they spend the money and the time that they will never be able to race for a living. Go to a local sprint car race, most all of the drivers have money already and that is how they afford to race and only a few will be able to make money at it. If you want to race you better have money to burn. Racing is what makes rich people poor not poor people rich.

For some reason motocross people think just because you work hard and its your passion and you have devoted your life to motocross that you are entitled to make money doing it, just because you work hard it does not mean you are good enough. There are very few who can make a living at it and they can get rich doing it and that's great. If a rider can afford to go run the nationals for a few years I say great ! go have a good time and enjoy the experience and if you are good enough the money will come to you, if not you gave it a shot.

Racing in norcal back in the late 70's I could and was pulling in anywhere from 600 to 1200 bucks week on a good week racing and winning 2 classes at 3 different tracks. When I hit the Nats at 16 and 18 I wasn't racing to make more money but i was racing the Nats to gain exposure that would hopefully lead to a factory and the money and career that went along with that ride...just like Holigan previously mentioned.

Take a look at today's racing and tell me how it compares to the 70's....It has progressed in more directions than you can think of.
It should be $1,000 for 40th overall, that would help solve problems for many riders. I really don't think that is asking to much for your top 40 guys.

Well that is pathetic that a world championship riders makes little cash for riding in America. That's OK , they rides for nothing in the world Championships, so I guess MX Sports IS doing something right! Joking of course.

There are interviews that Hallman and DeCoster got like $600 a week plus purse money from Edison Dye in the 60's, so we are making progress right??

What is truly pathetic, and I was lambasted for it in 2008, is that JS7 made $3050 per event ALL THROUGH 2008!!
When I question that, I was told he was making close to $150,000 per event with all his contingencies.
I was told by some on here that Nascar money that is posted includes that "CONTINGEMCY" money when posting the payout in the paper. So really, if you count JS7's contingency money, he was right up there with NASCAR.......

That blew me away!!

It never ends with these promoters and people who support them.

If some 3 digit guy on a KTM started to win, he wouldn't make enough money to do anything to put a real program together with the money he won. 12 X $3050 = $36,600, not counting signup fees. That is very sad for a world class athlete......

I also don't think you would see Rodger Goodall, the commissioner of the NFL, come on a message board and explain stuff.

Goes to show you how small this sport is and how little it has grown in the last 25 years.

Probably get called out by name again, but I don't really care.

The funniest thing about this thread?

People calling people out for not knowing how much the track or promotors are making at a national all the while arguing for a bigger purse when they have no idea themselves how much is spent and made at a race.

Very few know EXACTLY what it cost to put on a race to please EVERYBODY as much as possible. The riders, the teams, the fans, the vitards, there is a lot of money spent in a lot of different areas trying to please everyone. We can all speculate but some of the ideas and math we have seen in this thread is laughable.

I GUARANTEE you that the people in charge want nothing more than the riders to make as much as the guy who finishes last at the current PGA tour event.

Nobody will ever be completely happy. If the purse was doubled, this place would just find something else to complain about. this week it is the riders purse, last week it was the internet streaming....

Lets take bets on next week, shall we? Hmmm, it is PA so I am willing to bet that you guys will want automatic umbrellas that don't block your view of the race if it rains....

Were umbrellas allowed at Elsinore? wink...

I think this arguement keeps coming up cause there never really has been an answer, just two sides going back and forth about something there is very little info about.. Shhhh, it's a secret...

Again, other sports post earnings, profit sharing, attendance, and so on, mx? Well they only post what they want you to know..

Begging for the day we get an "Outside the Lines" type of show. You ask questions in mx and you get labled a hater. I always asked questions in school, when I got a bs answer, I pushed for more answers.

I'm sure there are a few people out there with a book in them that would turn the mx world upside down. Just not the time for it yet I guess.

Can't have it both ways, can't want mainsteam, but then keep everything close to the vest. Sports just doesn't work that way.

At the end of the day, this is just a big business.
Some people are making huge money while others are making scraps.

Like most business, the guys who actually provide the services makes the least amount of money vs the guys who manage.

A company's goal is to pay their employee's the least amount possible!

Ex.

I install tint, vinyl, and clear bra wraps on high end cars. I gross the company $2k-$4k a day yet am only paid $150.
If I don't like it, I need to start my own company. Which I have already started!

If the riders don't like it, they need to join together to fix the problem, otherwise it will stay the same forever.

Lets put this to rest. Guys the tracks pay a set contract fee with increases every year and those with a womens race in the past paid a little more. The more tickets you buy does not go to the purse. A small part goes to MX Sports and the rest to the track. And other than a few outside vendors that can't conflict with those of MX Sports thats the only money they make besides parking. And by that I only mean the cars. And those with passes do not pay for parking. At some tracks the equipment is part the tracks and also rented. Help to operate them is also paid for except some tracks who are paid by MX Sports or are volunteers. Sound equipment needs to be rented and installed and that cost the track. Water at some tracks has to be paid for and also the porta potties. Some tracks bring in bleechers for people to sit. Those tents for Press and the private groups, some are paid by the groups and some by the track. Some tracks have to install extra phone lines and internet access which the track pays for. In California they charge for Highway Patrol and Sherriff or Police at the event. Security is also paid for by the track. The TV coverage is also paid in part by each track. There is no money the track makes for having it on TV and losing those ticket sales to those that stay home to watch it. Guys most of the tracks are happy to break even. After you do it for a few years you can figure out how to save a dollar or two but its not a get rich endevor for the tracks. Hangtown did great this year with their crowd, Muddy Creek looked good but the way they keep the camera's down could not tell at Colorado but Dave there has not done well in years past and that adds up. Pala lost money and as did Elsinore, thats the chance you take if you want the race. I really don't think anyone from MX Sports on down to Elsinore would do this just for the love. Its about business and to see a bigger purse something has to shrink on one side to go up on the other. If you just keep looking for places you can get the money from instead of putting on a good race anywhere are you really helping the sport or just making money. Its not Nascar, Pro Football or the NBA so don't expect it to get bigger. Walk around and ask people you don't know if they watched the Pro Motocross Championships on TV or plan on going to watch a local race. I bet 95% or better ask you what your talking about. Its for those who eat, sleep and breath dirt bikes and any type of bike racing. We crossover from dirt to roadracing to Nascar to Formula 1 to Drag Racing because we feel it and understand it. The guy standing next to you at In and Out could care less. And one thing Glen Helen had to deal with as did Pala and Elsinore. The Industry. I will say most f them don't buy tickets they are given them. Those are lost sales to the track. And I know from Glen Helen we gave away a SHIT LOAD. The sport has not grown really that much if any at all. I can remember Nationals at Saddleback and times when they turned riders away. No fancy banners and arches and flames and fireworks. Its Motocross and its in the dirt. I don't need all of that I just want a real race on a real track. I think thats all we ask for. Its not Supercross. Its racing for Men and a few tough women not the Circus.
1 question for DC. If you tell someone they have to pay an amount already reached ahead of time and then say its a donation? If it is and they don't pay are they skipping out on a payment on a bill. I thought a donation amount was the choice of the person making it. Am I wrong on this one? Just asking because I can.
