Are hand guards finally cool in MX?

I think is amazing that so many rough/tough/macho/I'd do her motoheads are quite so worried about how "SICK' a bike looks.

"Bad front fender, I'd never buy one, side plates are a weird shape, I'd never buy one, hand guards ruin a bikes lines, I'll never use them."

Sounds like a bunch of 13 year old girls..............

New, built for this season. My wife had fusion surgery on her lower back, in Feb. She is still recovering. Yes it is displayed in my office. I wish that I were in the roost storm. Giving and Taking.

I crashed and broke my hand guard off the first time I rode with them so I don't mess with 'em.

I thought I remembered you posting that you didn't really ride much anymore due to injuries or old age? Maybe I'm wrong. Anyway, I'm talking about fast guys. Guys that actually can really ride a 450 and grab huge handfuls of throttle everywhere.

I had a baseball sized rock hit me square in the face on the 1st lap of a race. Broke the chin bar clean off my helmet on one side. I was seeing stars for the next 5 laps and had to keep reaching up to remove the flopping chin bar from my vision.

You call it dorky. I call people that ride without chest protectors just plain dumb.

chest protectors are mor or less for deflecting roost..they dont do anything else as far as im concerned.

Actually because they block wind chill, during cold weather they are awesome at keeping your hands warm. The difference is huge and I wear my summer gloves on even the coldest days w/ handguards in place.

During the summer, my hands get hot w/ them on so I remove them.

My Thor shell had chest and back protection. It did a lot for me than deflect roost when I got run over in the second turn at Glen Helen and had tire marks across my jersey (shell was underneath it) and rubber on the back of my helmet. I got up, finished the moto plus holeshot the second moto. If I had been wearing just a jersey I wouldn't have started the second moto and more than likely wouldn't have been able to finish the first moto after my crash.

I later switched to the RXR even wearing it in 100 plus degree heat. I soaked my jersey in water and was fine for fifteen minute motos at REM.

Yup! I'm all about body armor...I wear knee and shin guards, and the fox titan body armor (plastic on the chest, complete back, shoulders, elbows and forearms, and upper arms)...the more plastic I can put on my body the better as far as I'm concerned.





I've taken several high speed tumbles across the desert...and besides some broken/bruised ribs...I haven't had a lick of "road rash"...and its BECAUSE of the body armor.

No, I still ride, although I don't race much any more because I have no interest in 4 lap motos. And I occasionally ride with national class riders, so following guys on 450s that are on the gas is just a normal thing. I just don't follow directly behind riders - only an idiot follows someone because you can't see where your going. If you're taking alternate lines, you don't need hand guards or a chest protector. About the only time they have any advantage at all is in the first half lap, and when you get right down to it, that's just motivation to get a good start. And since I ride a 500, I figure I can dish out more than they can.

For what it's worth, if I was a big off road guy, I'd wear hand guards and body armor. Trees and limbs don't give very much. The flip side is when you race in Houston in summer, you're not going to wear all that crap. You just aren't.

I'm not trying to convince other riders to ride without chest protectors or hand guards. If they want them, God bless them. But I ain't gonna 'cause I hate the way they look, I don't think they do a damn bit of good and I've managed for 40 years without them.

I don't wear hand guards because I've crashed before and had my arm get caught with it and it broke my arm.
I'll take a broken knuckle over that any day of the week. (They weren't the woods one that connect to the end of the grip they were the ones like TP199 wore)

Like you I'm not trying to convince people not to wear them, but for me I feel it's a pick your poision type deal.

I had my hand crushed by a baseball size rock that was kicked up off the ground just high enough to nail my hand. I would believe the hand guard would have saved me a bundle in med bills and I missed 6 weeks of work/riding....at least I could still wipe. So yes, handguards are cool

I like them, I race and ride in the woods. Bike feels weird riding without them now. I don't like chest protectors, but when I ride with the guys, I wear it. A lot of fast guys, a lot of rocks and roost. And I've clipped trees and branches, and my bark busters and brush guards have saved me. They help in the winter to from frost bite on the fingers! It just depends on where u ride, and who u ride with. In Moto I have no use for them, but i would use the acerbis ones KR94 uses, and yes I think they look sikk!
