I was looking at the 'Community' section just now and saw a cool picture and got me to thinking about riding style. When you have an elbows up riding style from years in MX, but now race the woods, it can come back to bite you and bite you bad. Ive almost shattered my elbows several times racing scrambles hitting trees while going full tilt in tight stuff. After the last one that nearly took me off the bike I now use elbow pads.

This pic kicks ass and shows exactly what I mean:

Nice form StupidnSlow !

Any you other offroad guys use elbow pads too?

Dress for the crash my man...Elbow protection just seems like the right thing to wear.

Don't suppose they'd pad the trees for ya' !

I never ride without them now . Due to riding with out them in my younger years and a few other mishaps my elbows are all scar tissue. It hurts to set them on the table .

Good point 92. I have yet to bash an elbow but my shoulders have taken some hits.

Some people will say that your camel back is a form of cheating...

I say...what is that curly silver thing coming out of the front of your motor?

When I used to do hare scrambles I rode a lot with some AA woods guys and I basically rode MX through the woods... Wide open, elbows up, foot out, They got me into more of the woods mode and I stopped crashing so much and started going faster. If I am in the woods my feet are on the pegs, I saw a guy stick his foot out around a turn and hit a stump under some leaves, turned his leg around so it was facing me.. Totally different style in the woods than the track and it's that way for a reason.

My son always wears elbow pads. At least he did until he lost one. I forgot to get a new pair before his last practice outing and of course he crashed and skinned his elbow up pretty bad. Now that his football team is in pads and hitting, he has had the scab peeled back on it twice.

I had some elbow pads but I gave them to my girlfriend to use as kneepads, because she's so tiny.

Wait...that's not what I meant! It's a true story damnit. You guys are in the gutter!

More importantly would be that the knee's are tight aginst the tank at all times, unlike the rider in the first pic. Smile

When I trail ride these days especially in ROCK-INFESTED Arizona I wear elbow guards and already have tested them out a few times. Result=they WORK!!!!!!!

Moto I don't for fear of arm pump.

Lets see, Ive been riding dirtbikes for well over 35 years, you'd think I could get your wisdom drummed into my cranium. I guess Im not too bright.

Its like this: when your almost 45 years old and running long scrambles, (not some easy 4-5 lap moto) you take your breaks when you can. That pic is in a long open field right before the chicane and check point well over an hour into the race,, so sure, Im on my ass in that section. You guys with this sage advice wanna show me your skills, cmon down to Tejas and show me how its done. I will load the RM and ride with anyone on the trails.

I use elbow / forearm pads, and I can't tell you how many times I have smacked them in the trees. Being a fairly big guy ( 6'2 240 ) I am not the most agile guy, my buddies give me shit about going through the tree's instead of around them.

Gonna be in the Open-B when it cools down and we start back.

I had hurt my knee riding moto at CCMX (meniscus/MCL) and quit riding for 2 years. I had major atrophy on my right leg after limping for a year and then finally the surgery. Sam (Whnuckle) was generous as hell and gave me his Asterisk braces, so I met another Motodriver at CCMX one day to see how the leg would work. He had to kickstart my bike for me,, my right leg had that little of strength. Anywho, I had heard about the TORCs thing and my knee was finally feeling better so signed up. I had no idea how fast their classes were/werent and not knowing if the knee was gonna handle the stress post-op I lined up in Open-C to see where I was. As my luck would have it, I was coming down with flu the first race, but lined up anyway and did a 5th outta 25. Missed 4th by 30 seconds or so, and that was sick and straight off the couch. I compared my times with my riding buddies in Open-B and thats were I need to be once it cools down and we hit some more races. I run woods in practice with lots of friends who run Open-A, Im just not fit enough to hold that pace very long. Its just not as easy at 45 to keep the fitness thing peaked.

You run TORCs, too?

I run TORCS in 450B and recommend that class unless you're racing with some buddies in Open. There's usually only 7-10 guys in 450B and Open B has 20 or more at some races. This year has stunk for me in TORCS but I still love the races so if you make it down to the Sept 13 race, come say hello. I'm on a Honda, #314.
