Currently, I'm riding with an old Thor Aftershock chest/back protector. I'm wondering, are these types of armor better/worse than under the jersey roost protectors.

Does the hard plastic frame that sits away from the body provide more protection than the closer fit foam/plastic under jersey models?

Seems to me that a rider would be better protected by the hard plastic that "floats" off the body...

I also imagine the air flow is better with this type versus the closer fitting type.

Since I only have experience with over the jersey/hard plastic, I'm looking for opinions on the under jersey models.

I'm concerned with being impaled by a limb, stump, etc. in a fall and the hard plastic seems like it would protect best with the added benefit of being cooler - right?

I race mostly hare scrambles with some MX and enduro thrown in....

I have used both and really it's whatever feels more comfortable to you...but I will say that tracks that have some rocks in the dirt, it's nice to have the chest protector rather than the under jersey protection

While it is guaranteed to be hot in the Florida sun, I use the Thor Impact Rig. It is one of those compression garments. It is rated to take an impact, whereas chest protectors/underjersey foam are only meant for roost deflection, and are not rated to take blunt impact. Food for thought.

I really like that chest/back protector! Can you wear it under the jersey with neck brace?

I ate crap in one of these troy lee ones today - over the bars, other than having the wind knocked out of me and a few scrapes (right forearm and leg) I came out surprisingly uninjured.. https://www.troyleedesigns.com/products/5231-02

I've ridden with both and am currently using an Acerbis plastic chest/back protector under the jersey. Had to cut a bit out of the upper sections front and back to accommodate the Leatt. The soft protectors are more comfortable and I personally feel a little looser on the bike with them. That said, they are about worthless in a crash, which is why I switched back to the hard plastic. I like the Leatt one that Canard has been wearing under the jersey. Will probably be my next moto-related purchase
