"Times are different. There ain't no money in it anymore."
Those are his words from The Moto Inside The Outdoors. Can't say I'm surprised to hear this. Very sad and I wish him all the best in his future endeavors.
Just step away, and be succesful at something else with no bitching or whining. Love Tommy, he's a class guy and a competitor and goes about is business the right way.
He's always had great style on the bike....
Come to think of it, since I was listening to it on the way to work a 5:30am, I might've dreamt it.
Anybody else hear it? I think it was either the post Seattle Podcast or post Salt Lake Podcast. It was recent though.

I chronicled Tommy Hahn during his 2012 season, not knowing it would be his last, but more as a web design / wordpress / mx journalism project. I chose him as a subject because he always been a favorite of mine, but also I saw him show up at A1 as a true privateer without much support, racing against the big teams and thought a racing web site would give him some exposure.
However, after he broke his leg early in the supercross season, I thought my GoTommyGo project was dead. Later on he was picked up by Honda to do the nationals, but it wasn't until half way in the season that we learned his racing contract was all performance/results based and a tough road ahead.
The Moto: Inside the Outdoor video (Season4, Ep. 1) gave an insight as to what was really going on beyond the race day.
In 2012, on the factory Honda, he only was paid by Honda if he placed 7th or better. He had great equipment and support for the outdoor races, but things happen during a race that are out of your control that really affect your results . . . and your income.
Hangtown, Tommy finishes 8 - 27 for 14th overall . . . no bonus money.
Freestone, Tommy finishes 9 - 7 for 7th overall . . . Payday!
Thunder Valley, Tommy holeshots the 1st moto and is on pace to a top 5 finish, then he gets hit by a rock and breaks his finger. Poof . . . no bonus money for a DNF, and he misses the next 3 rounds . . no bonus money for a month.
Tommy comes back to race Millville but has allergic reaction after 1st moto and cannot start moto 2 . . . 11th place overall, again no bonus money.
Tommy comes back swinging at Washougal, finishes 7 - 7 for 6th overall . . . finally a PAYDAY since round 2!
Southwick, he has a great 1st moto, finishes 3rd. 2nd moto, he crashes out while running in top 5 and finishes 10th overall, no bonus money.
He never makes it the remaining outdoor rounds because of his practice crash and broken neck in TX . . . again no bonus money for the rest of the year.
Continue racing MX for nothing or make an actual living doing something else . . . I hate to see him retire early, but you can't fault the guy for going after a steady paycheck.
There is a lot of uncertainty in the racing world. One moto your at your best, the next you're being carried off the track on a backboard.
It would be great to see him at one race this year, maybe Southwick ! He's very fast in the sand. Who knows . . . ?
That gives me an idea for a new web project . . . Bring back Tommy !

At this point, I'd much rather see him become an MD or physicians assistant than come back. Not because I don't like the guy as a rider, but he'd have such an easier life making it as a doctor than a professional racer. . . There just isn't enough pie to go around for all the riders.
also the dude had the best style hands down. I hope he is happy whatever he decides to do.
I missed the last few opportunities to photograph Tommy at the nationals. I typically only attend one race a year in So Ca and it's been the last round of the season the last few years, which means I don't get to see all the riders if they get knocked out early in the season.
2012 at Lake Elsinore, he had his accident mid-season was out for the year.
2011 at Pala, he was hurt
2010 at Pala, he was hurt
2009 at Glen Helen, he raced but I didn't get very good shots of him.
Hey, Tom. Would you grant me permission to use your photo of Tommy to do a digital painting. I love that shot and I think it would make a great painting capturing Tommy's hard charging style. I will not sell these only make a few copies, and send one to Tommy for his trophy case. I'll send you a large canvas print for your trouble. You can contact me at tmphotoart@dslextreme.com. Think about it . . .
Thanks for the positive comments guys, let's all wish Tommy well and good fortune in whatever endeavor he decides to pursue.
