It is hard not to get greatest and entertaining mixed up.

My favourites were Hannah, Bradshaw and Stewart. Bradshaw did shit title wise, but wow.....what a show!

Entertainment wise, they would be my top three, with Barcia and strong contender.
I know exactly what you mean. Bradshaw, man what could have been. If he had come through with the Sx title in '92 I think he really would have broke through with that first title out of the way. I saw him destroy Jeff Stanton first moto at Southwick in '92 and that was when Southwick was sand and and every square inch of the track was covered in 3-4ft deep whoops. When he was on it was amazing

Number 29: Grant Langston. That must make him the only South African on the list. I wish he hadn't had that eye problem. He would have been Stewart's biggest challenger in 08. The main thing I'll remember about him is cleaning out Alessi in the last turn at Hangtown in 05. Then he got up and won the race with his toe pointing straight sideways.

Do we even want to go to Hangtown and what GL did to a 16 year old Bobby Bonds???

Why put an * by Dungey? You would have to do it for every rider after they split up the seasons and made the first half of the season 250's and the second half the 500's. All of the riders get the benefit not just Dungey.

I wonder why you do lists like this? It is impossible to compare riders from different eras and it is irrelevant. Its an insult to the riders who, during their run, may have had tougher competition and a bad bike or two. To say that JS or RV is better than RJ or JW has no foundation in fact. It is simply the opinion of a group of people and, IMHO, not worth the paper its printed on. Every winner of a race and champion of a series was the best there was at that place and time.

Stantdm, I don't think such lists are worth the paper they are printed on either....

So we skip the paper and post them online instead!

Besides, it's a fun way to remember our heroes from the past and interesting to try to figure out where they might stack up against today's top athletes. And you are right, every rider who wins a race is the best that day, but there are a lot of days to consider and measure and a lot of us enjoy the debate.

PressPassP,

Good question on MXoN participation, but we decided that we would focus strictly on the outdoor nationals in this series of 30 riders. Had we brought the Trophee and MX des in, I think O'Mara catapults up a few spots -- his rides in 1981, '82 and especially '86 were all-time. But that will be for the all-time MXoN list and maybe we can do that before Teuschenthal.

But I do want to defend our staff placing Langston ahead of O'Mara. Johnny won nine nationals and one title over a decade; Langston won 12 nationals and two titles over the course of seven years. Johnny had tougher competition, but Langston had more success, and over a shorter time...

The next few picks will probably really send a few folks spinning!

Ya, I guess so! Windham? Top 30 OF ALL TIME? Thats a joke, right? I mean come on, there must have been 30+ different national champions over the last 40 years of AMA racing, I wouldnt put Windham above any of them...

Windham finished second in the championship four different times to the number one rider on the list. I think that's good for top 30.

I am aware I just dont think a bunch of second places makes a person one of the greatest.

So which three champions should be taken off this list?

RJ
RC
Howerton
Hannah
Barnett
Tony D
Jones
Smith
JMB
RV
Omara
Ward
Bailey
Lackey
Weinert
Sun
Dymond
Kied
Stanton
Dymond
Holland
Lechien
Emig
Henry
Lamson
Reed
Dungey
Alby
Hanson
LaRocket
Glover
Cooper

I know I am missing a few. I just dont see Windham being ranked higher than anyone on this list...

The list takes into consideration your competition. When your main competition is number one on the list and you've finished second to him four different times, that earns you top 30.

Let's think for a second the guys who went toe to toe with Carmichael and came out on top, for even a single race, in MX...

Windham
Tortelli
Stewart
Dowd (125)
Ferry?

That's all I can think of honestly. Maybe there's more but they aren't coming to me. Windham definitely deserves top 30.

It takes a certain mentality to win championships, to put it together for an entire season. I never saw that in Windham. So, what three national champions are you going to put below Windham? Make a case for that please. Make that four, I forgot Karsamakers (sp?). Not sure if I missed any other AMA MX Champs.

As far as longevity, in my book that isnt as important. Ask Windham, I bet he would give up all those bridesmaids finishes for ONE championship. Hell, I bet like most he would rather have given up 14 years of moto for that ONE championship.

To make your case you really would have to take out FIVE national champioship winners if you are going to put Badshaw above Windham, which I am sure most would.

So, what five and why please?

O'mara, Dymond, Holland, Tedesco off the bat, they could not win on the big bikes outdoors, Windham won more races on the 250/450 than on the tiddler.

Wasn't Jones just the top American in his titles which gave it to him by default?

I would also put him over Lackey to short of an AMA career.

Darrell Schutlz got injured but there is another champ I put Windham above also above Mr. Sun

Its hard to think of champs you missed and also the ones I would put behind Windham.

Take RC out of the Picture and he is 2nd in every category outdoors which means he was good and fast for along time, 2003,04,05 he was never off the box its just RC was always on top of it.

I missed Shultz and Tedesco, good finds!

Omara, come on, shorter career but a better MX racer for sure.

Ok, I will give you Jones, Lackey, Sun, Holland, Dymond, and Tedesco. Schultz, IDK, he was one tough mofo. Knee problems and many surgeries cut his career short but I will give you that one.

So Windham may have been a better racer than 7 national champions, guess 28th isnt THAT far off base...

I dont know, I may have to take back Jones. Three time national champ (four with the stupid trans ama thingy). Three time champ, thats hard to put below bridesmaids finishes...

Besides, was RC really that good or was the competition that weak? I believe it was the combination of the two that made him so dominent in the 2000's...

Obviously championships are important and a factor, but to me in this list you scout the rider, and although Windham never won a championship he was definitely one of the fastest riders of his generation. Actually over a couple generations.

Were in the mordern era has there been weak competion. This is not 1976 were the World series was far and away the series with the "real" talent. So did all pre 1980 champions count when are AMA series was clearly the second tier series to the FIM world? Were those riders better than Windham who raced his entire career in the hardest MX series in the world also Windham was able to raise his game three times 99,03,11 thats insane to be able to up ur pace with the progerssion of the sport time and time again. But to say the comp he was facing was weak... No way our sport has come so far than the box van 1970's he always had comp RC just made everyone in the outdoors look like they didnt belong with him Reed and Stewart included.

Well I did already concede Lackey, Sun, Holland, Dymond, Schultz and Tedesco... I really dont see any other past champions that could be ranked lower than Windham though... and yes, RC was on another level, I agree totally.

Windham only 28th???
You've gotta factor in career length, fan base, popularity, value to the sport, etc...
Easily should have been top 20. Championship or no...

Hammertime, a lot of us have very high regard for Glover and his outdoor accomplishments! This guy was a badass too, but way before most of the staff's time, though I knew him and saw him race maybe a dozen times:

He was tough to place because the early records and rules were made strange by some questionable decisions by the AMA to first recognize, and then not recognize, then recognize again the Flying Dutchman!

I'm not nearly old enough to even remember this guy, and to be honest this is the first time I've ever heard his name. From the sounds of things though, he belongs on the list. It also sounds like he really got screwed over. I'm glad you guys are looking at every possible variable to come up with your list of 30.

Can you be honest and tell me whether or not there was any debate at all over number 1? Lol.
