I would stay away. When I was younger I would always want the bikes that had the cool rims and aftermarket pipe but as I got older I realized that those bikes are usually ratty and it's better to find bikes that have been ridden by and meticulously maintained by an old vet who never thrashed it.

Sure, you'll get a spare engine and a bounch of other stuff. But 5500 sounds a bit pricey to me...

The shock, forks and discs look legit on the #7 bike. If it actually is one of their bikes though, not sure.

I never understood the Thrill to buy an EX pro's bike? Have you ever seen them ride they get ever ounce out of that bike all the time. Iam sure most of them are not the Best mechanics, I just don't get it. I wouldn't even consider buying a bike from a Local A rider, now my bike would be a PERFECT bike to buy LOLOL lightly ridden OVER maintained LOLOL

Buying used bikes is such a crap shoot. Some pro's are going to take care of their bikes meticulously and some are going to rag it and sell it. Some squid riders will drown their bike in water and then sell. Some squids barely ride their bike as much as they intended. These days, you can clean up the bikes to cover up just about anything.

Here are some of the things buddies of mine check before buying. (I haven't bought a used bike but my next bike will likely be used)

Radiators, make sure they're straight.
Oil and Air filter, make sure it's all clean. (This one confuses me. Anyone selling a bike can clean these but it's a common point of interest. )
Check the life left in the tires, chain and sprockets and brake pads
How does the bike start? (Make sure it's cold when you start it)
Ask when the top and bottom ends have been serviced last.
Take the skid plate off the bottom and make sure oil isn't resting on the bottom of the case. Oil leaks tend to settle here.

Where else do you guys look?

I pull the filter and check the air boot, they may have put a clean filter on for selling purpose, but they probably didn't clean the boot out. Dust/dirt in the air boot tells me it wasn't maintained that well, moving on or negotiating a price that accounts for some potential valve issues.

I just bought an ex pro's bike that doesn't even have the paint worn off the frame from boot rub. Looks like it may have been raced once. Still has dirt on it from the race. And it's a 78 model. I'm "superpumped". Overall it's a little rough looking in appearance, but beyond years of sitting and a little magnesium corroding, it's a gem. I do agree with you about the pro's race bikes and practice bikes being thrashed though, gotta proceed with caution.

First thing I check are the spokes. Guys can go over the cosmetic stuff, but if they didnt even occasionally lay a wrench on the spokes, that's the tip of the iceberg of neglect in my opinion.

On the aluminum frames, the weld closest to wear your boots/pants rub is a dead give away of the hours on the bike.

Those welds will rub smooth to where you can't hardly see the tig pools if the bike had serious hours on it. Consequently, these are usually the guys claiming "25 hours, never raced"

another thing to consider, is that racers typically take care of their bikes very meticulously. so sometimes "never raced" means "laid up next to my lawn mower in the shed, ridden in my yard and put away dirty"

the very first place i look is here:

What do I look for on a used bike? Wrench marks, I look for wrench marks. Stock original parts, mostly chain ,sprockets and tires. No wrench marks with original tires, chain and sprockets will be a low hour bike unless they are totally fish hooked and bald. Doesn't mean the engine isn't trashed, just low hours! Sagging and sloppy foot pegs, welds around engine mounts. Steel frames from the Japanese mfg's have absolute shit paint and they do not even clean the welds before painting. Hard riding or lots of hours will have a lot of paint missing off the welds.

On aluminum frames, also peek under the shrouds where they rub the frame. Honda's with lots of hours will have a gouge damn near through the frame spars where the knees will be while riding.

Newman should be excluded from this conversation. When he say's he just bought an ex pro's bike. It's usually an unobtainium works RC bike ridden by Marty Smith or Jim Pomeroy. Wink

Was that you who had one of the original 1991 Team PC/Peak/Split fire CR125's that Mitch built?
Or maybe you were telling me once on here you knew someone who had one, might have been one of MC's old bikes,or maybe a replica build MC's 91 Championship bike?

A friend of mine had a couple of them. One was the 92 CR250 Team Peak/Pro Circuit that Jeremy raced at 4 or 5 east coast 250 SX's and possibly raced the Mammoth MX on it. Still had the AMA tech tags hanging on the frame near the shock.

The other was a Pro Circuit bike that showed up on CL in California. Super trick with the welded on skid plate mounts, alloy tank, PC engine, good suspension....the works. He had it restored and of course hung the #125 on it. Not sure who's bike it was to begin with.

This is my formula for used bikes, too. No tool marks, original tires, chain and sprockets.

I always look at the bottom of the frame and the linkage. You can change plastic, rims and paint frames etc but if the linkage and bottom of the frame show pitting, you can bet that the bike is well used.

my thoughts exactly. that and the more a bike gets tuned and modified, the much more meticulous your maintenance becomes as well.

If you are really into picking up ex-pro bikes, use Search tempest and use the Dade City Florida area as the center of your search.

The linkage and frame rails can get mashed up pretty good after one ride.

Awesome.
And yep, I see the red AMA Tech inspection band on the frame on that 250.
Wonder what kind of a value those bikes have these days?

I think they sold for about $7500.00 each recently if not mistaken.

That does appear to be a Works or A kit shock on this bike. Forks are stock though. Suzuki Hinson cover and yellow rims were only available to the Factory Team I believe too.

If it was Tortelli's bike all the good stuff is certainly gone. I wouldn't even bother looking at it.
