No not my old fat ass but Jake's.
Last night doing the top end on his bike he was sitting on a bucket with his leg stuck out straight he reached for a wrench on the floor and next thing I know he's on his back with tears in his eyes. Back to the beginning about 3 weeks ago he had a little fall washing out the front end and got a little tangled up and fell on top of the bike. I just thought it was a deep bruise from the handlebar hitting his upper thigh. He's ridden several times since this and been taking long rides on his mountain bike and longboard. A few times in the last couple weeks he has complained or I've seen him limping a little but he never let it stop him from riding his dirtbike.
This morning he could barely make it down the steps and Mom caught him. So she took him to the pediatrician and then to x-ray sure enough about a 1 1/2" fracture out of the socket. Seeing the Ortho on Friday so not sure on timeline yet.

So anybody with an injury like this? How long and what helps other than keeping him off of it?

Keep off it and really let it heal. If the ortho does surgery or not do all the rehab he gives and look at doing more rehab when that's done/ or if he fails to give you any. I didn't let mine heal all the way, thought it was good and went riding way to soon and it's never been right. Have me problems through college and now doctors are talking replacement. So my advice is give it time to heal and take it easy when he starts getting back to normal activities for a little bit.

bummer. Hope he heals up well. From all I hear, that's a really tough area to heal due to blood flow challenges.

So is it his femur or pelvis that has the fracture?

You need to be very careful here. I had a similar injury to my femur when I was younger by not taking it easy and continuing to race, which ended up with two pins reattaching the ball to my femur . This injury screwed up my leg for life and was one of the dumbest things in my life that could've been prevented.

Now I'm looking at a hip replacement 25 years later...

I'm 17, last year I fractured my femoral head, the back of my pelvis, and dislocated my hip. After they put my hip back in, the x-rays showed there was bone chips in the joint, like bread crumbs. I had surgery to clean up the joint. For the first two weeks, the pain was pretty bad. The doc wouldn't let me bend more than 75 degrees, because he feared it would dislocate out the back of the pelvis again, which meant I couldn't sit upright. I was on crutches for 2.5 months. Now it's just like new, it only hurts when it "pops", then it really kills. the best advice I can give is to take it slow, and if you're doing physical therapy, make sure to do the workouts they give you. I did mine 3-times a day, (they told me once or twice a day) which actually really helped the muscle recovery process. I was back on the bike in just under 4 months.

Here's the photo, it was very swollen. The little hole on the top is where a hose ran through to the bone to drain fluids.

How old is he? I don't want to scare you or put any negative thoughts in your head but when I was a teenager I slightly fractured my hip and continued to ride and do other things without really knowing it was broke. A few weeks later I barely crashed and it completely broke. Because I was young and wasn't fully developed yet it was my "growth plate" that fractured. When your growth plate fractures it can destroy the blood supply to your hip and cause all kinds of bad problems. That's what ended up happening to me and like dirthead1 said....it can and it did screw up my leg for life. I ended up having a hip replacement about 10 years ago when I was 27.
I would do everything the doctors recommend and just stay positive......good luck!

Thank goodness it isn't near as serious as yours. Again he's been riding his bicycle and longboard for a couple weeks and his dirtbike. It doesn't appear that serious but just wondering about time frame, 1st time non arm related injury.

That actually looks like it was broke in a pretty safe spot. The ball on mine completely broke apart....like this........

Wow! Yours was worse than mine, but very similar.

If this was my kid he'd be taped to a wall. Just the fact you are asking on here instead of your doctor is a red flag for me.

Read again "Ortho on Friday", with several broken arms we've followed this same Ortho's advise and never had any issue's. I was asking because have heard before about heal time in areas that do not have good blood flow. Besides the gulf is warming and the redfish bite is on!!!

So if you think I'm one who'll have my kid back on the bike in a couple weeks you're sadly mistaken.

Here is my hip, I still have my OEM parts but they just have a few added extras. Broke the ball joint off, happened when I was 37 they said if I was a few years older they would have just give me a new hip, I'm 44 now, I still have the hardware and I still race and have had no complications. I was back at work after 2 months and riding not long after that. So good luck with your sons break.

I have same as above on my left hip, but only the one major pin going into my hip socket, did it last year. It bothers me a fair bit at night after a long day at work which involves lots of walking, up and down ladders, stairs and carrying heavy things. I have broken both hips and they are both problematic and annoy me at times.

I have two scars similar to Chip600's. Blew out both hips, broke the top of the right femur, and tore up my left shoulder just over 3 years ago. A couple weeks in the hospital, then 6 in a wheelchair using one arm to transfer from bed to chair, etc. I was excited to graduate to the walker. Docs said 2 years to get to 70% and that I'd probably never get beyond that. I was always ahead of schedule so figured I'd get beyond the 70% mark but that's probably about where I am. My left side feels good (I don't even notice it) but the right side is practically bone on bone and hurts with every step. Hip replacement is a question of when, not if. Bottom line - like others have said, do the PT and let it heal.

Joey did the same thing but to his shoulder right around when he was Jakes age. The ball ripped out of the socket and actually broke in half. The key is having a really good ortho that spcializes in that specific area, and preferably who is a Sports medicine specialist.

Yes a resurfacing. It was bitchen for a couple years. (4-1/2 yrs later) it's starting to hurt again. Now they test my blood for metal every 6 months, they say when the levels reach 7.0, thats their red flag to revise to the whole schmeal like you have. Mines at 6.4pbb. See how steep the cup in the pelvis is ? They missed the angle by about 20 degrees. Dumbfuks.....
Coulda shoulda woulda lasted years, oh well. THR with a ceramic ball and a polyethelene (high tech word for plastic) liner is what they recommend next
Are you happy with yours ? Any limitations ? Mine was un-noticable at 2 years out, now not so much

I've been really happy with mine, its been about 10 years since I've had it done. I still ride and race moto and I've had some really bad crashes and other injuries over the years and the hip has held up perfectly fine. I have it x-rayed once a year and there hasn't really been any signs of loosening yet. The doctors say it looks really good and tell me to just keep on doing the things I've been doing.

Our Ortho has been great through his many broken arms and thumb. The hip thing may have us going to a specialist, but to me it looks minor compared to all these other guys. Will know better tomorrow 11am.

Thats good to hear, I've been riding and racing (well 50novice, does that count ? ha) and it hasn't loosened or shown any signs of coming loose yet (knock on wood) but rom is gradually getting worse and the pain comes on sooner and more severe as time goes on, I'll need a revision sooner or later, hopefully later...

Sounds like Jake has been through a lot. I hate to see these injuries. Even if they heal fine, when they get older, arthritis will set in at every one of them. Going thru that now. Take the time off as long as you need, skip a season. You will be better off as life goes on.

I used to build custom shallow water skiffs and fish Redfish Tournaments with Jake. It wouldn't hurt my feelings a bit if he wanted to go back and do this. But right now he's focused and dedicated, not too many teenagers have this other than girls and weed!!!LOL

Super strange place to have a break. That's actually an avulsion fracture that extended into the acetabulum. Is he weak with flexion at the hip? Does he walk up/down stairs with trouble? Post what the ortho guy says. If he's not significantly weak I would venture to guess that he won't do anything but tell you to chill out for a month or two.

Good luck!

PS. All these other dudes broke their femur. Totally different fracture and repair.

I got my left hip resurfaced a little over ten years ago no problems to date, although I've never had my blood checked for metal ions.

Well Ortho said it is already starting to heal and no mention of additional damage from the extreme pain episode when working on the bike. 2 weeks doing "nothing" follow up visit and said if x-ray looks good then, back on the bike after 3rd week. Which is actually 6 weeks after the fracture occurred.

Thank goodness his bones heal quickly, he has not been off more than 8 weeks even when breaking both bones in his arm across the forearm area.

That's great news Jakes Dad. It's amazing when these young kids are in good shape, you can almost watch them heal. It happens so fast. Happy to hear that, and good luck.
