Going to add oil and fill up radiators tonight and try and fire it up. What SAE engine oil should I get since I dont have a service manual? I have a qt of Kaw SAE 40 2cycle which will prolly work. Im assuming you add oil until it starts draining out the side hole/plug? I know I need to get a Service manual.

QUESTION-Being that my 86 is a hybrid, due to the fact it has a 1990 motor, will a 38 Keihin be ok for this motor ? As of now it has the 86 carb on board and ran great before I tore into it.Will there be advantage's or dis-advantage's to the 38 vs the 36 ? The slide on my present carb is toast. This bike has been a pleasure and pain in the a$$ at the same time.I have to complete this bike for the fact that my wife bought this for me as an anniversary gift.Hopefully next year I can put an 86 motor in the frame to make it all legit.JT,I'm accepting cash also,as your bike got this all started,LOL.Seem's every little nook and cranny on this bike need's something.I WILL NOT GUIT UNTILL THIS BIKE IS COMPLETE,but it will take more time than originally expected.Ledger.

10w40 will be fine. 600cc. I use Walmart 75wt gear oil and change every other ride. Aluminum plates contaminate easySmile

Don't fill the radiators with oil, it'l get too hot! :-)
The correct oil as per the manual is SAE 10-40W API class SF normally around 650cc, it will be written on the clutch cover near the level plug. Put the oil in then check the level plug. After you run it, let it cool down and check the level again.

The 38mm will give you more power on top at the expense of some low end. I have a 36mm on my 86 CR125 and to be honest I can't tell a whole lot of difference. Maybe if I tried it back to back I could feel some difference. Go ahead you should be fine.

What was his opinion of it and were you running around behind him ready to catch the bike?

He's been riding a CR85.
Truthfully I think he was shaking a bit. This bike has taken on a life of it's own.
He's ridden my KTM 450 and my buddies KTM250 XC so he's not shy about giving it a go.

Most likely he's moving up to a 125 soon. He hasn't raced but has been enduro riding with us.
Hopefully this season we can ride some Hare Scrambles or closed course type enduros.

Wtf? Poured in the oil and installed the gear shifter and noticed shifter won't move. Tried hooking up chain and moving bike back and forth to get it to click into neutral. No go. I can feel clutch engaging during lever pull. I bought this whole bottom end minus right side case cover and top end. Guy told me just needed top end and right cover. So don't wanna have to disassemble this motor!

I don't know much about this problem, sorry.
Does the shifter click though the gears?
Everything should move freely.

When you pull the clutch in it disengages the motor.
I don't think that's the problem.

Let me ask a couple guys on another dirt bike site
4/3/2013 6:45pm
Shifter shaft actually moves a lil bit up and down, just won't click thru gears, but it's stuck in gear.

One of my nedb buddies said that if the shifter has no movement, the shifter pawl could be bent our bound up .
Did you install the clutch cover?
He said it may be pinched .
Don't force anything that's a pretty small part and you could damage it.
4/3/2013 7:47pm
I did install the clutch cover but didn't notice anything binding up. guess I'll be pulling eng and removing right cover again. The guy shipped me the bottom end bubble wrapped in a milk crate. Guess I should've tried shifting the gears while I had it on my bench. Not really sure what to look for. Nothing has been easy on this bike!

We'll pulled the right case cover and found a small damaged hat bushing laying in the bottom. I'm assuming it attaches to the shift fork somewhere. So now trying to find a tool to hold clutch so I can spin the 27m nut off, inspect behind and hopefully solve the mystery. Was so close!

Top hat looking bushing goes on the end of the clutch actuating rod. Should have a ball bearing under it.

Shifter collar bushing goes on the end of the center pin over the drum shifter. If its kludged up bike won't shift. Don't have to remove clutch basket to fix it.
4/4/2013 3:44pm
It looks like the collar bushing goes under the shift arm which is behind clutch basket. Unless you got spider monkey hands, can't see how to get it on? Now I see how it falls off when removing right cover. Hopefully I can find one available.

Oi! I'm 52Smile ok, make your own clutch holder out of 2 friction disks and 1 drive disk. Drill 3 holes equidistant around the circumference of the disks and use little bolts and nuts to sandwich the drive disk between the 2 friction disks. That will lock the hub to the basket. Then use a penny between the primary gear and the ring gear and spin the 27mm nut off. That works if you have spare plates that is. G.

You're one of the guys who actually kept the bike , rather than guys like me who sold, regretted, and repurchased 27 years later.

The hat shaped item does go underneath the arm over the post in the shift pawl and between the spring arms. When you have it back on correctly attach the shifter to the other side of the shaft hold the shift arm on the clutch side in place and cycle through the gears. No need to pull motor or drain oil just lay over with handlebar on the stand. If you have access to an impact you should be able to spin the clutch hub right off. For torque on install the cheap gear jam was a penny. Softer than the gears so no damage. If you don't have an impact put all the plates back in push down on them and tap the end of the wrench on the clutch nut (poor mans impact) Should come loose. The best would be the old clutch plate trick mentioned above or you can use 2~3 small vise grips and sandwich 3 fiber and 2 metal to lock up the hub.

Yep, did all that yesterday. got it all back together last night and found a ball bearing in my shop rag during clean up. had to go into Honda IPC and found it goes in after the clutch pushrod. Amazeballz!

Well dayum.I've had to put this project on hold due to so much going on in this thing called LIFE.Job loss, very sick father who is taking chemo and trip's back and forth to TN.Absolutely no time right now,so if you good folk's on VitalMX would try to keep this alive I sure would enjoy checking in time to time on anything you guy's have to offer.I'm not giving up,I'm just putting this bike on the back-burner for awhile.Ledger.
