Cool, "brah." Drawing spoons would be too old school district-5 American-like.
We have also been having this problem at our local events. I wouldn't have taken this step if we didn't offer pre reg. It just wouldn't have been fair to the riders that had to work on Saturday or what ever.
Just trying to make our race weekends better for everyone and still be fair for everyone.
If you can't show up 'til practice starts and don't want to pre-register its not the track owners fault. Sounds like they are just trying to keep everything running smooth, nothing wrong with that.

yikes.
It sounds like it isn't a problem to pull spoons but they are trying to give an incentive to sign up early. So the sign up line isn't too long? How about closing sign ups an hour earlier? Gate picks are pretty important, not sure the order you signed up is cool, especially at a race that is important. What if you aren't able to sign up early? There are lots of reasons this may happen and then your gate pick is affected. A pre determined list for gate picks will allow many questions as to fairness...
Just my opinion.
First moto clothes-pin or spoons is the only FAIR way to do it. There is absolutely no scenerio where it is not possible to draw pins when you are in the staging area.
But it you havn't been in the bi state area for a while (IL/MO). Fair, Tradition and for the love of the sport are words that are slowly disappearing.
I like the idea of pre sign up, but nothing at the races, areas or local, that justify making pre-signup count for 1st moto gate pick.
The problem at PMP was everyone showing up late... like you said,,, there was even a line at the gate to get in. That line was only there the last two hours before practice started. Then all of those people came to signup the hour before practice started.
We where not happy at all with the way signup went at PMP and are trying to make sure that doesn't happen again.
We have new card readers now, got the pre reg going, going to have a practice only line, etc, etc.
We did everything we could to make sure every rider got a lot of practice Friday. And I think everyone did. We just don't want to have that happen again.
Most tracks use computer pick now days but that really isn't fair. Any mistake or change in race order puts late sign ups or moved riders last gate pick even if it was the office that made the mistake. Drawing at the gate for pick would make the track have to have another person in staging. One person can not give everyone their draw and get the "spoons" back after each moto when most local motos are less than ten minutes. Even with three sets of "spoons" it is very hard to do and almost always ends up with someone not happy or holds up motos.
The rules for the Mid America series came out two months ago and it is being done the same way. We haven't had one complaint about it yet and had a lot of people say they really liked the idea.
Ya it seems no matter how hard you try someone is always finding something wrong with it.
More and more people just keep waiting later and later to sign up and it really screws stuff up the whole day. All the way from race order to gate pick to the score keepers not having the right riders on each moto sheet. Why do you think the race order changes once it has been posted? Someone signed up late and are now in back to back motos.
I'm just as old school as anyone so I really hope we only have to do this one year but the only way we can go back is if we get more help at the tracks.
The first thing most people say is just close sign up. When and how? Do you stop taking money at exactly X X time? What about the people that got in line right at XX time? The tracks can't make it now, how can they give up even one entry? So everyone has to pay for the ones that sign up late no matter what.
It goes on and on,,, the best thing to do is pick something and go with it. That's the only way its fair to everyone. Same rules for everyone and everyone follow the same rules.
And it looks to me like you have missed the whole point of everything I have said. Yes, the gate pick is by sign up order for all of sign up. So if 20% of the riders pre reg in a class with 15 riders you can still get a top 6 or 7 gate pick by signing up at the track as soon as you get there. The only people this will matter to are the ones that show up 5 min before sign up closes.
We have needed to do this for the last few years but I would not do it until I could make it fair for everyone. I spent a little over $600 making sure everyone would have the same chance at getting first gate pick just like drawing spoons. There is no way I was going to let the guy that doesn't have to work get a jump on the working man.
people that show up 5 min before it closes either had problems or don't give two sheets anyway.
how does a man who doesn't have to work have a jump on the working man in a random draw? it's fair because now I can get on my computer and sign up? really? what about the guy that doesn't have a paypal account? bet he thinks it's pretty fair.
REFUND POLICY: No refunds after preregistration has closed!
you don't even say when it closes.
Its your race and your series, do what you want. To be honest, I could really care less. We are going to hit some of your races, we are not going to hit others. Not a big concern what gate pick we get in the first moto. This is just a DISCUSSION, remember how that works. Not a bitch fest, just simply discussing.
Then start charging $10 for late sign up.
Drawing pins would eliminate all the above problems except the one extra staff. Millville uses 1 person to do their gate and they have had 6 or 7 hundred riders everytime I have been there. Proper planning would allow for 1 person the start the races. Have places marked on the staging area, while in staging draw a pin, when moto is called, have them people line up in the numbered staging spot, once lined up, collect all pins, wait for moto to elapse, (while moto is occuring) redistribute pins to next prestage moto. Drop gate, while the next moto is lining up based on numbered position, be collecting and moving in the next moto, etc, etc, etc.
Again, I said pre register is a GOOD IDEA, just not for 1st moto gate pick. This is all kinds of unfair. Target me if you want, I am use to it, seems these days people have a problem listening to the truth, but remember, numerous people responded to this thread, negatively, before I even typed anything and I am just echoing the pit talk I am over hearing along with my own opinions.
I will garantee you right now, call me whatever liar you want, the "series" nut huggers chasing that ever elusive jacket, have ALREADY signed up for this years races. Its called unfair.
And yes you guys did a good job getting people out to practice Friday when the lines where long.
Pit Row
Tracks like Millville are having races at one track and they have one person in staging. We are running at 6 tracks and would have to train 6 people and it is hardly ever the same person at each event even at the same track.
We just don't have the manpower to do that yet but like I said. That is the way I think it should be done and hope to go back to it if we start getting the turnout to add a member to our team that we will be taking to every race.
And just FYI, We have 7 riders signed up for our LLQ and no one for any of the Mid America series yet.
Now not to be only negative.
I really like how you handle practice, $25 per rider. This is the major reason we are hitting your series/races (and others). Nothing wrong with making a little money but bleeding the riders dry by making them pay "per bike" to practice is ludacris.
Like the selection of tracks that you guys are holding races at, we are not series "followers" but we would go to these tracks anyway as they are some of the best in the area.
And looks like a great contingency package along with other perks.
Should work out great for tracks and riders.
Bring the pins back !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I've been in this sport for over 40 years and still as old school as you can get.
How's Justin? Every year I always expect to see his name on the Loretta's roster. Still goose calling and playing guitar?
Pop wheelies,
