GoPro steps on a SNAKE by issuing DMCA against company who *reviewed* their camera

Edited Date/Time 3/27/2013 7:37pm
"GoPro filed a DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act) notice demanding that a camera-focused website called DigitalRev.com pull down a review comparing recent GoPro and Sony "action" cameras."

....and proceeded to have their asses handed to them by Reddit

Response from GoPro representative, hours later, followed by more justified thrashing...

I'm beginning to see more of what makes GoPro tick, and I'm not sure I like their approach.

I own a GoPro. Am I allowed to post a video of me riding without the expressed written consent of GoPro?

I just bought a gopro, and my brother just bought a contour roam...and I've gotta say, for what I do, I wish I'd have purchased the roam. I don't need all these fancy modes and stuff...I just want a camera that will record what I'm doing, and turn on and off as easy as possible...and the contour fits that bill perfectly.

I got suckered by GoPro's marketing! Sometimes "most popular" isn't the "best".

You guys are getting caught up in semantics.

Don't let a company's attorneys and/or their actions deter you from the fact that their product absolutely kicks ass!

I'm jus' sayin'...

A companies actions will always dictate what I buy. If they decide they want to be dicks to everyone then I see no problem buying a different product.

Just like I will continue you support companies that support the riders, I will continue to not support companies that do things like this.

A good product without a doubt, but values should have a place in the world as well? At least for me...

Just saying of course...

No their excuse is BS, in the DMCA they explicitly specify the article as the infringing material, not the store.

Read the first response to the PR Guy's reply in OP's second link. The poster does a pretty good job of explaining the bullshit.

GoP** rep's karma on their reply (OP) sits at -1714 points as of a minute ago.

Still think it's shitty that they only allow certain riders to run their cameras at the races. This will backfire.

Summary from Reddit:

1) A website called DigitalRev wrote a review about GoPro.

2) GoPro sent a DMCA notice to the webhosting provider of DigitalRev, telling them that DigitalRev is breaking copyright laws by using the names GoPro and Hero in their article.

3) DigitalRev is forced to take the review down by their provider - the hosting provider doesn't want to get into legal trouble.

4) Community gets outraged.

5) GoPro claims that it wasn't about the names at all, but about an allegedly unauthorized picture of the product in question; an issue they usually resolved with their resellers.

6) kris33 calls bullshit, saying that (1) the offending url was the review page, not the picture; (2) there was no attempt to correct any mistake and besides DigitalRev is not a reseller - instead a takedown demand was sent to the webhosting provider; (3) the letter sent unambiguously states what is actually going on (4) regardless of what the offending asset is, it's fair use under DMCA because it's a review.

I wonder how much of the recent BS from gopro comes from the new ownership? The owner recently sold something close to half of the company to the company that manufactures iphones.

I judge all of this by the ABSOLUTELY RETARDED SHIT I'VE SEEN US DO IN HERE!

Therefore, I fall back on my original statement.

Otherwise, you self-righteous ass-holes end up lookin' as stupid as...well...

Me.

When I've reacted to shit that turned out o be BULLSHIT.

I'm jus' sayin'...' 'cause I'm an old Fugur that should know better...
