Someone dies and it's a knee-jerk reaction? They were lucky they dodged bullets for years on that event at X. I seriously held my breath while watching (and covering) that one...especially when it was Youtube competitors.
Have to agree.

When someone like Paris Rosen shows up with no visor, football pads, and a clapped-out YZ and says he is going to front flip, that is not even entertaining to me, its nail biting.

I saw Lusk get killed and I don't want to see another body go limp like that on National T.V.

Andguys, don't fret.

With X games dropping this competition, is just means the Gravity Games, Mt. Dew Games, and X-Fighters will pick it up and promote it.

My first reaction to FMX riders getting killed was take that crap off of TV and it will stop. Some of the most talented riders in the world, but to me ESPN was using them with not much concern for their well being.

Then I got to thinking I have followed auto racing since the 60's and have seen or read about deaths that have probably reached triple figures since I was a boy.

So I guess we just need to understand these brave young men know the danger/risk and still choose to perform, nobody is forcing them to do what they love. When there are opportunities to make it a safer sport make those changes, but to completely eliminate it does not seem to be the right thing to do. If that was the solution there would be no F1, moto GP, NASCAR, drag racing etc

Best trick winner.........
This is a winner....

But seriously dropping Best Trick is a good move IMO. Over the last 5/6 years it has gotten undoubtably more dangerous. It was almost certain someone would get carted out every year.

I have mixed emotions with this decision - I hope the best for the fmx riders who banked on this event each year. Gonna be hard shoes to fill missing out on X-Games for alot of these riders. I'll be in Barcelona in May for the X-games and am stoked to see they still plan to have best whip, freestyle, step up, best trick and endurocross. This looks like a great opportunity for the folks running X_Games to bring in a World Class Trials exhibition. Todays trials riders would blow people away more than watching kids flip their dirtbikes in my opinion.

It always baffled me that XGames always had a cement hard landing for the best trick competition. A rubberized cushion landing like what nitro circus uses would increase safety and decrease injuries without taking away the ability of the guys to land and roll away.

It's "X"(for eXtreme). These are extreme sports.....Shawn Murray is paralyzed from a BMX flip gone bad......is that now removed? Didn't Sarah Burke die skiing last year...

Is SX/MX getting close to its edge, too? Seems like a lot of deaths/paralyzing injuries are happening with these bigger jumps and more capable bikes.

Average MX tracks didn't have 80' jumps "back in the day" with novices doing them....just saying The new bikes are awesome but they also give seem to give a lot of riders a false sense of ability....IMO

The again, I broke my neck on an 84 KX125 so what do I know.

I don't want my posts being mis understood.

I believe Best trick needs to be in X games. I think it is the most exciting event. Whether you like it or not, people never turned off the TV or walked away.

However, I think we need to re think what is cool and direct the sport in another direction. Nothing beats taking a bike and making it do the unthinkable. (at x games)

Yup! I raced at competitive edge for the first time last weekend and the track was unreal. The jumps were huge and everybody was doing them....except me. The "novice" class gate had about 30 guys racing it and they were all clearing 80' tabletops with ease. The motorcycle is evolving way faster than the human body! I'm just glad I'm old enough to just race for fun because I would break my back out there (again) if I was trying to compete with those guys.

The bikes are evolving faster than safety equipment. That is a problem. The other day, I thought about all of the guys I know who have broken their neck or back. Let's just say it was a sobering thought.

Yea it's pretty amazing to see the evolution of football equipment compared to mx equipment. As the sport got more and more aggressive the shoulder pads doubled in size (as did the players). I'm comparing apples to oranges but the the only difference between Jeff Ward's and Ryan Villopoto's safety equipment is a neck brace and a full face helmet. The speed on the other hand has increased exponentially.

I say freedom of choice, people have been killed in just about every activity known.....there have probably been heart attacks by curlers.

Whoever said someone else will pick it up is right, and there will be people willing to do it.

I have no idea, I dont smoke weed.

What does X-Games contribute to the core of the sport? Nothing. Its the moto equivalent to the old made for TV "ABC's Battle of the Network Stars". Google it.

SX/MX is going to get a reality check. It's unfortunate, but it's inevitable as the technology and the riders continue to push the envelope. It's not a matter of if, but when it will happen. The bikes are too good, and the new riders are fearless.

you should smoke weed, its a great thing...

But being down in Alabama i wouldn't touch it with a 10ft pole!!

you can get the 5 year minimum sentence for a nickle worth of weed.. which is a little less than the size of a penny....Soo i don't blame you for it.

Sucks to see it gone.. But now they can bring back.. street luge or extreme sky surfing or even Super modified snow shovel racing

ESPN should take the X-Games back to it's origins. Get rid of all the motorized sports and bring back the eco-challenge and rock climbing events.

You obviously haven't been to an X games event. You probably sit in your trailer in Alabama and just tune on the TV and watch to get to your opinion. (see what I did there? I used a belief that all Alabama people live in trailers)

Contrary to what many believe, X games in Los Angeles is a HUGE event that is a week long that is full of corporate sponsorships. They bus in bus loads of kids every day from area schools and pack the house with kids and families that otherwise never go to a "dirt bike event". The flat bill crowd you see at anaheim will most certainly be there. However, they are pretty drowned out with lots and lots of families and kids that have never seen motorcycle event.

Guess what happens when X games leaves town? Some of these corporate sponsorships are looking for more ways to be involved in "dirt bikes" along with a lot of the families that just witnessed the event. Red Bull first sponsored freestyle riders in the states, so did Target, Makita and others before getting involved in sponsoring SX and MX riders and events.

All across America kids that aren't directly involved in MX/SX are more likely to know who Travis Pastrana, Brian Deegan, Nate Adams and Ronnie Renner are compared to James Stewart, Ryan Dungey or Ryan Villopotto because of the once a year event on TV. When they talk there parent into letting them ride Dirt Bikes, they go to the dealer and get introduced into a whole other world. They buy gear, bikes and accessories.

Only narrow minded "core" enthusiasts don't see how X games help the core of the sport.

You don't have to be a brain surgeon to see how this event helps. Freestyle MX has helped SX and MX a lot more than some people will give it credit for, both at the entry level and professional ranks.

Here is an idea.

Summer X games is on or around August.

That new Utah parking lot National is in August.

See what I am about to step in? Run that one round in conjunction with X and build the track somewhere adjacent to the X festivities. Make it a big party in a field. Bring Sal Masakela into the booth with Emig and Weigandt.

Or better yet, use the Soboba Indian MXDN track that never happened. That's in the Hemet area not too terribly far.

Surely the core 'necks would call it a circus, but can you imagine the exposure the sport of motocross would gain? And the Utah track is being built on flat ground anyway, so you arent sacrificing anything on terrain.

The bottom line, the sport has been pushed to the limits. It took years, but it has reached a point where people are not surviving crashes. It is much further along than BMX, big air skating or any other sport where you don't have a 200 Lb machine chasing you through the air.

I don't want to see another friend die by his bike cutting out, under rotating a flip or getting caught upside down while trying something nobody has ever done in order to make a few grand and get a gold.

Call ESPN and myself vaginas all you want but seeing people die isn't the goal of X games.
Regis,

Does this mean we can finally have a natural terrain based event for X-games? I asked Tablieb about it years ago, and I know Twitch has mentioned it also.

I wouldn't say Pages isnt going upside down. He did a 360 and a 540, both inverted. I would even say his runs are more dangerous than flip runs. Just not as boring to watch.

X Games is aware of Indoor Trials. They just need to be convinced to included it.

It seems like a perfect fit.
