Ride it out, I don't have the spit second timing to bail anyway!

In Zach's case, I'd guess what Fro meant was that it was good he got away from it so that it didn't land on him.

From conversations I've had with riders, they seem to always prefer staying with it...as long as they're on top of it.

If your going to come up short sometimes if the landing is big enough you can hop the bars and make a nicer transition onto the landing and slide down smoothly. Sometimes if its endoing its a great idea to leave the party because that never ends nicely when the bikes on top. For over jumping, I don't have an answer, a wide open right wrist, suspension and body ready to absorb the hit is your best option imo.

If you get tangled in with the bike, endo, or land on some one you're screwed. If your just coming up short or over jump stay with it. Simple as that. I got tangled with my bike over a triple and the result was two broken arms.

I have a hip replacement in my right leg and my left ankle needs to be fused or replaced. I don't have the choice of ejecting off the bike because it would royally screw up either one of my legs or both. With that said, I've been hurt really bad because I had to stay with the bike.....broken back, collapsed lung, broken collar bones, ribs, internal bleeding, etc.... I totally see why it's better to get away from the bike, I'd rather hurt my legs instead of something else. I can't do that though cause my legs cant afford to be hurt anymore.

I look at it like this, if your momentum is going to carry you in front or underneath the machine, get off, get off quick. If not, case the living sh*t out of it and hold on!

Here is an example for you.

A couple of weeks back Freestyle Cam Sinclair had something happen as he was about to hit a ramp to pull a back flip.

He was already committed to the trick, but with something happening with the bike he did not have the drive he needed to
A - Complete the trick
and
B - Make the down ramp!

He was launched wheel high across the gap from the up ramp to the down ramp,

He had two choices, stay with the bike which was going to hit the flat face of the down ramp, or try to bail over the bike and make the very start of the down ramp (The flat part that before it starts to go down)

He made the smart choice to bale in that situation, His bike did not make the gap, but he was able to push off the bike and get him self feet first to the flat part of the down ramp.

He smashed his ankle and foot, but was better then smashing head first with is bike into the face of the down ramp!

NOW

If he left the jump with even less momentum, and there was no chance what so ever he or the bike was going to make the gap and both were going to be falling from the sky on to the flat ground below. Staying with the bike and letting the suspension take up some of the energy of the flat land would have probably been the better option.

All depends on the situation. If the bike is going to aid to reduce the impact stay with it, If it is not going to aid in any way, get as far away as possible to lessen the chances of a second impact as the bike follows through!

If you want to see some pretty gnarly pics of Sincs foot during surgery check out his facebook, Twitter or instagram page!
exactly what I was thinking, if you going to lawn dart into the upside, or you could push off the bike and get yourself over and land on the down side, I think the later could be the desirable option. I have seen people land separated from their ride and slide down the landing uninjured. And as split second decision as that seems, I think you know pretty quick if your not going to make it.

Just instincts. I'll tell ya what, when you spend a lot of time dirt jumping (bicycles) you really learn when to bail and when not to.

Usually you don't have a choice. The bike is ejecting you and you just let go rather than having a 200 pound bike land on you or you land on it.

K-dub just answered, in some cases the motion from the body causes the eject. You can't just push urself back mid-air, if the momentum throws your body away from/over the bike all u can do is eject the thing and hope for the best.

And in some cases, like RV 2010, you have to bail because the bike is gonna flip over and u wil end up doing my nickname. The last thing u want to happen is landing head first....

Before the suspension was as good as it is now, you weren't riding out the crash anyway, so you might as well be safe from the bike. I'm still a fan of bailing though when you know things are bad. I felt like Stewart could have gotten away with a minor crash at High Point in 06 had he just stepped off. Same thing with Reed at Dallas last year. However, they ride out far more things than I ever could, so I guess it's tough for me to say. When I'm riding though, I want that bike as far away from me as possible.

If you hold on to the bars and never let go it's only a bad landing not a crash.....Tongue
