New emulsion tube and needle fixed the problem, the bike runs better than I ever thought it would.

Now I gotta fix the forks...........

Forks fixed temporarily. Still need a decent pair of the correct inner tubes.

Took the bike to Bithlo MX this past weekend for a ride. My wife got to practice it too. She says it is a little tougher to ride than her modern YZ125.

At least it has the proper number on it! But when you get the hang of it, it's a whole new level of fun. Cool little bikes. So light and they will run with vintage 250's and open class bikes depending on the level of riders you are up against. The absolute most fun that I've had racing was on those bikes.

Might race it at Mesa Park MX this weekend. The FTR series has a vintage class.

Can someone tell me, is there a later model counter sprocket that fits this bike? Something readily available?

Didn't damage the cases when it came off did it? Sprocket Specialties will have any sprocket you could want for that bike.

40 miles in the woods this weekend on the CR, trying to figure out fuel consumption for hare scrambles. The bike ran like a champ and handled far better than I expected. Puts a smile on my face every time it comes on the pipe, which means I am smiling constantly while riding it.

Awesome updates bronc3! I've been AWOL for a spell, glad to see you're doing so well and having so much fun. Did you trophy in spite of that broken chain?

That trophy pic and the wear on the kickstart detent reminded me of the rubber band I looped through itself on the frame to keep the lever from flopping around. Memories, I am jealous!

Good to know that FTR has a vintage class. Watch out for those palmetto roots and heart of pine stumps; are down pipe bash plates still available?

1st overall, despite the chain. I threw a cheap new chain on it to get by until the new gearing arrives. The "new" pipe should be here in a few days also.

We are loaded for a race in Bartow this weekend, but I don't think we will make it in time for me to race vintage. Bringing the CR just in case.

Pre-dented pipe on the way. The original is too nice to trash.

Got the pipe on the bike and the bike ran fantastic. Now I have to deal with an ignition problem.

I hope your ignition problem can be resolved quickly and economically. I haven't done any restorations but I would guess some components could get pricey, depending on availability?

I thought I'd throw a couple of pics in here just for fun, hope you don't mindBlush ; I knew they weren't worth creating a thread over. In the late 70s I took motorcycle mechanics at Pinellas Vocational Technical Institute in Largo; I believe the institution is still there but under a different banner. I had some used-up parts off of my '74 Elsie there and a Harley-type named Ted Barry concocted an ashtray out of them. The only part (obviously) not of Elsie origin is the inverted chrome Harley generator cover. There's a bit of clutch basket wear evident in that second pic.

That fairly well represents my idea of art. Those were good times.Cool

Cool pictures! The countersprocket looks better than the one I just replaced on my bike.

I shot a message to Joe and it sounds like he will be able to help me with parts. He doesn't have OEM specs as he runs PVLs on his bikes.

Do you know/remember any of the ignition specs for this bike? My service manual is less than helpful when it comes to component specs.

This is part of the message, a description of symptoms and what I checked:

The bike has been running perfect for many hours , but abruptly died on me yesterday. Tried a plug thinking it had fouled (hasn't fouled a plug yet at all) but discovered I have no spark. Started checking the bike at the house and it appears I have intermittent spark. If I let the bike sit it will spark for about 1 to 4 kicks, but then it goes away. The bike may actually TRY to start one time, then nothing.

I have checked my grounds, kill switch and all harnesses/connectors. I checked the stator, got 278 ohms on the exciter side and 20 volts AC +/- while kicking. On the pulser side I read 131 ohms and 8 VAC +/- while kicking.

I checked the coil and got 17K ohms on the secondary side and 1 ohm on the primary side.

I don't know the correct way to check the CDI, but read 1.7M ohms between the primary coil lead and ground (green lead). On the pulser lead I read 155K or 115K, depending upon the polarity of the meter leads. When I measured the exciter lead I found it to be open.

All measurements were taken with all components disconnected.

Any suggestions? I am using an OTC multimeter, comparable to a Fluke. My manual gives me some test procedures (nothing on the CDI), but no specs. Has you check for basic continuity, then tells you to "entrust your components to Honda for functional testing".

A couple of simple checks, disconnect the kill button, then check spark after removing the spark plug cap. Hope one is the problem.

I've checked everything thoroughly and am fairly certain the CDI is bad. Parts are coming, so we'll find out if I'm right.

There are some outstanding people in the vintage community, for sure.

Finally raced a 1.5 hour hare scramble on the CR, Fun but painful.

Bike did great, but needs rear shocks.

I've been in Virginia for eight years now but can still taste that Florida sand. Where was the HS held? I assume an FTR event?

Painful I can believe. They could be painful on more modernized long-travel equipment. Good job, getting out there.

The race was on the Brighton Indian Reservation on the west side of Lake Okeechobee, and it was race #9 in the 2013 FTR hare scramble series. This one was actually our club's race.

We go to Dade City in a few weeks, but I will probably race modern in that one. We have a local 14 race MX series firing up next weekend at Bithlo too, but there generally aren't any vintage bikes there. I might play with the CR there.
