Kawasaki Team Green

Edited Date/Time 2/19/2013 7:40am
The 30th anniversary of Team Green is taking place this year.
There is a video and some news clips with little mention of the early 80's where it all started.
I know there are a few former team members who visit the site.
Maybe some of them could share some interesting stories or memories from back in the day.

My name is David Mohr I rode for Team Green in 1979. I picked up my bike from Kawasaki midwest in Grand Rapids Michigan
I raced out of district 11 southern Ohio, rode a Honda the year before and loved it..... never gave the Kaw a chance ended up
going back to 79 Honda and giving Kaw to a kid named Eddie Forsythe who was a friend of mine and he raced it for a while.
I raced for Team Green again in 1981 under a different race program. Another friend of mine Scott Watkins from Kentucky
also was on the early Team Green team in 1979 with me.

David Mohr ! Wow a blast from the past ! Not sure If you remember me (Scott Stanford)
I remember the first year I started racing 1980 you were Can-am mounted and I do remember you riding that 81 KX in the 250 A, 1982 you were KX mounted also as I recall.
Is 1982 the year you let your girlfriend ride your KX at DMC ? I'll let you tell the story it's a classic ! Hope all is well.

Hey Scott great memory!!!!!! In 1980 I started riding a Can Am 250 out of Cincinnati for the late Ray Brown with a lot of
support from the Factory . In 1975 I bought a Can Am from Ray and it was a rocket, So in the winter of 1979 we hooked up
again. The 1980 Can Am looked like a pumpkin on wheels, I thought that bike was going to be fast but it wasn't.Anybody
who has ever ridden the 1980 Can Am 250 knows that it was slow , didn't handle very well and the brakes sucked.
I tried to make it work, first by putting on an aluminum banana swing arm with Ohlins shocks. I had to do that because I would
break the fiberglass backing on the seat when I would land off of a big jump!!! My next step was to put Simmons forks on it
with a Yamaha wheel and double leading shoe brake so the front would be good and I could stop it. Every thing was going
as planned went to Dirt Country to see how the bike stacked up with rest of 250A class. Pulled the holeshot in first moto
had one lap to go for the win and bike stopped running right before check point. I just left it there and never rode that thing again. The following year 1981 I started racing for Team Green again !!!!
MEMORIES!!!!!!

Yep, that looks like Greg Quador. He helped me out in '82, but the KX250 I was racing was a POS that tried to kill me so I ended up back on a Suzuki for the second half of the year.

My dad and Dave Jordan were good pals back in the day. My dad owned a Kawie dealership here in Georgia. I remember them bull shitting after work talking about "team green" and how it would work. I was a kid and didnt realize what I was really listening to. Turned out pretty good I guess huh. Turpin and Liles rode out of the shop and I also remember them having the spirit of 76' land speed record bike at the shop as well. Really cool being a kid watching all that stuff go down.

Hi, I remember picking up my brand new 1979 KX250 at the Kawasaki warehouse off of route 287 in New Jersey. I'm not sure of the town name. I was told that only three 250's were given out to riders east of the Mississippi? After some test riding to check the bike out I brought it to my good friend Eyvind Boyesen for some mods. He cut the shocks apart and worked some magic to them. Some engine work was also done. The bike was really good, nice power and handled well. At the second local race at Hurricane Hills, Clifford, PA. I crashed and broke my right wrist. Well after alot of thought I decided to stop racing and focus on a real career. I gave the bike back to my sponsoring dealer which was Phillipsburg Kawasaki in New Jersey. Jack was a really good guy there and helped me out alot. If anyone bought a slightly used 79 KX250 from them with the number 171 on it that was my bike. Regards, Tony DeLorenzo

My name is Steve Barna im from New England. I was a yamaha support rider in the 80s but i switched to team green in 82.
A local Kawasaki dealer brought Scott Brown to Southwick mass to race us and to beat us. I won all four motos and scott finished fourth and fifth overall. I did love the competition and it was rare to find fast racers from other districts in new england. It
Is nice to see this picture of scott because it was the same year.
