I tried to join Vital MTB, but that POS wouldn't let me join, so I gave up, now I'm hoping that someone here will be able to give me some advice on the world of mountain bikes.

My first bike was a Haro hardtail that I rode the wheels off, then I went to a Specialized Big Hit FS for downhill riding. Both were great bikes, but all I did (90% of the time) was urban riding, blitzing around the neighborhood and the little dirt trails I could find. I mainly just ride wheelies, bust some stoppies, and hit some jumps or drop offs when I find em.

My question, if anyone here can even answer, is if a Gary Fisher Mullet DJ would be a good next set of wheels? I've always seen the DJ bikes and they look like cool set up. Am I going in the wrong direction?

Thanks, guy who shares the same name as me. I did see that review on MTBR.

I'm sure we're similar in the fact that we just want our MTB to kind of resemble the feel of a dirtbike. I'm not into the big tall things for cross country and climbing hills. I like fast, aggressive, wheelies, slidin the back brake in the dirt or grass, hitting jumps and drop offs, just getting my dirtbike fix without riding a dirtbike haha.

This will also get me to and from campus on nice days. I suppose I should just ride the damn thing haha. I dunno, just lookin for insight!

A buddy of mine picked up a dirt jump style bike for the same reason. That Gary Fisher looks pretty solid, and the single speed will be a good workout on trails. I can't tell from the pictures, but is that a hydraulic or cable brake on there?

Looks cabled to me, it has a pretty good list of mods it looks like. I don't know dick about MTB mods. So your buddy likes it for the daily riding type stuff? I know it sounds silly, but you should holler at him and ask him if he can ride the back wheel well. When I'm on my way to school or the store, the only pleasure I get is holding a nice long wheelie by some pretty girl or something, so it's sort of a make or break thing on my purchase lol

I ride a Diety Streetsweeper. Pretty much sounds like you want to do what I like doing on a mountain bike. Mullets are good bikes and that one looks like its in decent shape. Look on pinkbike.com beforehand though. Lots of good bikes for pretty reasonable prices.

Seriously save yourself the trouble and get something, at a minimum, with a better fork, hydraulic brakes, bomb proof wheelset, and DJ geometry. That bike is spec'd with cheap parts that aren't for concrete drops or the like. Plus the frame doesn't have the geometry of a modern DJ bike.

I'd buy once and get something of quality like these:

Santa Cruz Jackal DJ/Street/HT - $1650 (Wilsonville)

This one is way better than that one for $550 also...
Dirt jump MTB - $500 (Albany)

Hmm, I appreciate the info, is that fork no good? I think the rear brake is hydraulic? That one in Albany looks solid, has front and rear brakes too, just sounds like he rode it a lot. Unfortunately 550 is really my max budget, and I'm wavering on that, even, as of today.

My boy has a Mullet (outgrown it now), it's well built but I don't think as versatile as other styles if you want to do more than street thrashing. I'd say you can do better than that price. We bought this one new as a prior year model for $200.

Resurrecting an old thread I started here. On Labor Day me and my buddy and his brother went and rode the crawfish downhill trail in Cottage Grove Oregon, I was on a Haro hardtail I bought from my brother lol all stock, a little beat up from my urban abuse - DAMN! Shit was so gnarly, scary at times, but so fun. We were shredding pretty good but obviously my bike was holding me back a bit. not even 1/3 of the way down we stopped to get a breather and I felt my brakes and they were hot to the touch.

I need to get a DH bike! Damn, two-wheeled addiction is rough. You need an MX race bike, a pit bike, a mountain bike, maybe a BMX bike, a trail/dune bike. It's all just too damn fun tho!

This is my old pig. The rear suspension soaks up probably 75% of my pedal effort. It weighs as much as my ex. The front end wants to tuck under braking. The front brake progression isn't a progression; it's either not enough or over-the-bars. But, I ride for the scare and the workout, and it's bulletproof. I'd love to try a 29-er, though.

So are you gonna get a real Mtn Bike? my older bro got a badass one not long ago, he was blown away how well the susp. works, even in normal riding conditions. I think he has like 5-6" of travel, they are so trick nowadays. I dig the tech.

Wife and I were at the bike shop looking at street bikes today. I couldn't believe some of the MB. They were showing me some upper end street bikes have hydraulic brakes now. Do the MB also?

Yeah, most all mountain bikes over $1000 have hydraulic brakes, with the higher end stuff even being 4 piston calipers. They also make hydraulic seat posts now so that you don't have to get off your bike and raise your seat if you're about to start a climb.
