I don't know how the comentators, or anybody else for that matter, didn't pick up on Tomac passing Anderson under a yellow flag at the weekend? It wasn't a matter of did he/didn't he, it was blatantly after a yellow flag.

He clearly enters the yellow flag zone behind Anderson, and leaves ahead of him. Is this not a standard 20sec penalty, or something along those lines?

I can't help but feel if it had have been a lower key rider making the pass on Tomac, it would have been caught on and action taken. Opinions anyone?

I guess you don't know what the yellow flag means. You CAN pass under the yellow and this was coverd in several other threads.

Yeah I saw another post on that and I thought to myself I'm pretty sure yellow is caution only, not don't pass, triple etc...

Unless they have changed the rules in pro racing yellow flags are only to warn of downed riders and passing is allowed. If there is a Medical flag you can't pass of jump triples.

Whoops! My bad! Has this rule changed recently, or has this always been the case? I thought I recalled one or two commentaries at the weekend saying "such and such" can't fight back because he's under a yellow flag. It must have been because they were in a rythm section and couldn't triple, etc. as you said.

I know that in the UK, and in most domestic championships in Europe and in the World Championship that passing is not permitted under waved yellows. I guess I pick up on it more easily after racing with this rule for 15+ years!

Any "local" race will say you can't pass on a yellow flag. AMA is different. The AMA has 2 flags. Yellow is caution at your own discretion and the red cross flag is shut er down and keep the wheels on the ground..

Sorry Motoxdoc, but that is incorrect except for AMA Pro racing and the Red Bull AMA Amateur Nationals at Lorreta Lynn's.

The rule from the AMA Rule book for Amateur events

3. YELLOW: Caution. When a yellow flag is displayed,
competitors must ride cautiously until they have passed
the incident that caused the flag. In motocross, when a
yellow flag is displayed there is no passing or jumping
between the flag and the incident that caused the yellow
flag. Failure to do so may result in the rider being docked
from one finishing position all the way to disqualification
from the event, subject to the referee’s discretion.
4. BLACK WITH 1-INCH WHITE BORDER: Disqualification
of a rider. That rider must report to the referee at once.
5. *BLUE: Indicates you are about to be overtaken by
faster riders. Hold your line and don't impede their
progress.
6. WHITE WITH RED CROSS: Indicates that ambulances,
safety vehicles or emergency personnel are on the course.
EXERCISE caution. In motocross, Arenacross, etc.,
should this flag (red cross) be displayed, riders will slow
down and maintain position with no passing or jumping
until past the incident. Failure to do so may result in the
rider being docked by one finishing position up to
disqualification from the event, subject to the referee's
discretion.

To me it looks like Tomac is being an opportunist. Hey, if no one calls it and Anderson let's him by . . .

I asked Anderson about it in this week's Winners' Circle. Check the homepage.

What's always pretty remarkable is how the rule book is up and easily available to anyone who can use google, but people will leap to conclusions about penalties and disqualifications without taking the time to look at it first.

I know it would be a major headache for the AMA and for offending riders, but I don't think it is such a bad thing for riders not passing under yellow near a downed rider. I can say as a father, if riders were getting "racy" while my kid was laying on the ground I would't care who they are, I would let them know I didn't like it.

I am sure the pain-in-the-ass factor plays in if a rule like this was ever re-implemented professionally, having free will to do anything but jump a triple definitely takes responsibility off of a rider for riding aggressive near a fallen rider though.

Hindsight, I can't think of any recent incident where aggressive riding around a down rider (with yellow flags flying) resulted in further injury to the fallen rider.
