I would love to see some scans of that article as well as the klx one..i have vague memories of it..

around the same time i was switching to big bikes..my dad almost bought me Mike Healey's 97 xr400/cr250 hybrid he rode for the 4stroke nationals..thing looked so badass...i ended up getting a regular old xr400 with the 440 kit instead...fun bike but it was too heavy for me back then.. then i had a 95 husaberg fc501...weird bike to say the least

Hey G-man, I'm brand new to this forum, just wondering if you still have the aloop kit for sale?
Yes, I have the kit only. Sold the bike.

Make me an offer (ph#?)

The shop I worked at an employee built one of those KLX bombs back then. I memory serves me Larry Roessler was supplying hop up parts. Only thing I remember about it was the weird front heavy turning style when chopping the throttle and the occasional nose down panic rev in the air. Well that and the late nights in the shop replacing the rods it snapped. Finally sold him my KX250 when I bought my CR250 and our four stroke experiment was over. Should have seen the writing on the wall though. No matter how heavy and slow that thing felt lap times weren't that far off. The weeks with no rain lap times were sometimes faster on the KLX.......

To their credit, MXA also printed a quote from Rick Johnson, who was quite an accomplished 4-stroke racer at the time. His words (paraphrasing) were, "The 4-stroke is the perfect motocross engine. Too bad they are too heavy and don't handle well."

What is laughable is that they were calling it a '125 shoot out'

They did the same thing with a KLX that year. They were project bikes. Cool projects too, unlike they do these days
One of my favorite project bikes was a 1986/7 KDX200 by either Dirt Bike or Dirt Rider. They had the hubs painted green, and if I remember right the engine too was painted green (a la elsinore hondas). I miss those project bikes.

Me too.I think my favourite was the late Ron Griewe in Cycle World with his build of the "Ogre Ultra 510" where he built a CR500 with a Husky 510 engine.Unlike short attention span mags nowadays,it was a detailed article and was before the YZ400 came along.
If I could find it online with the pics somewhere I'd post it up.No luck so far though.

And you just bumped it to the top again. Smile I liked those projects too...I remember a project Motocross Journal did with a KLX 300 in the late 90s. They upgraded the suspension, changed the sub frame, made a custom aluminum tank and used the plastic from a KX. Cool bike.

Why so negative? It's a forum and the topic is getting response and attention. See Terry, that's what's wrong with this place. No disrespect to you but why comment like you did? You are a moderator and are being a dick. Just don't respond if you don't like or delete it if you think it's not a worhty topic (but that would be silly). Bottom line is leave alone if you don't have anything good to add. I mean really it's so simple. Does it make you moderators feel good to be-little members because you don't agree? Just stop. It fucking drives me crazy.
