Hate on me, but I am really starting to like Mike Genova and his outlook on SX/MX in general. I think he makes some REALLY good points in this interview. He talks quite a bit about "big name outside" sponsors.....like he said, think about it, if SX/MX was to lose the energy drink and the one insurance sponsorships...........Shocked Shocked Shocked

Agreed.

Seems like He has enough cash that he can say it the way he sees it rather than having to be sucking ass with the usual p c answers.

Nice to read an honest interview once in a while.

I was impressed with what they accomplished last year. No small potatoes. I applaud anyone going up against "The Man" and doing well, if not in this case, whipping some ass. Having said that, he's puzzled by the lack of response from Suzuki? Lol. Okay.

"He is responsible for developing the bikes, more than anything..."

Translation:
"He gives us all the proprietary information he learned when Mike was riding the factory Suzuki a little while back."

and we all know he has seen the inside of a works Suzuki shock Tongue

I will actually be cheering for these guys. They remind me of Noleen Sizzler back in 94. Best looking bikeso n the track, small team, no factory support, and killing giants.

Their bike last year looked like a mutated rat with yellow sick on it. However I saw in a recent video their bike in white and it was one of the most beautiful bikes out there. I hope they will bring that same bike to A1. Unfortunately I can't find a picture

He's right about MX/SX needing new big time outside sponors or this sport is in trouble. I still can't fathom how all other motosports can get so much attention, sponsorship money, hype, coverage, purse money, etc... while motocross can't get shit. It's like motocross is the red headed step child nobody wants to be associated with... I guess I'll never understand it.

Kudos to him for doing what he's done. That being said, he just comes off as a complete and total prick all of his interviews.

Here are a couple of reasons why:
"First off all..."
"Well, lets back up."
"First off, I want to get away from the term privateer. That term is somewhat derogatory and suggests that we are a step down from another team." - Do you have factory support? No. Then are you doing it from private party support? Yes. Then that makes you a fucking privateer.

It's like he wants total control of the interview. He manipulated the questions to give the answers that he wanted to give. Like I said, credit given where credit's due. He has found out that if you pump enough money into the team, it will be successful. That's typically a tried and true equation. Now, to say that he wants to same credit as KTM for bike development, that's just retarded.

That's just my opinion...

If he wants to get the same cedit as KTM for bike development, he needs to make 400 of them available for sale to the public by May!

Awesome guy, I can only agree with his opinions. Once you look at this sport from the outside, you know something is wrong.

Hey Grieby54, the man is not a "total prick", he is very passionate, positive and enthusiastic, and he gave some strong and detailed answers, some of which required a different perspective. Thus the required an explanation before jumping into further details. In no way was he trying to manipulate the interview.

Is there another interview where he came across as a total prick or are you only speaking of this one?

Moving along, and for me, it is really interesting to see a team with a different perspective, and a team owner who can say what he wants when he wants, and not be worried about pissing someone off.

As far as comparing his bike it to KTM, I think he was simply making the point that both his team and KTM started out with new bikes to develop last season and a clean piece of paper. They both had many challenges, but KTM has heck of alot more resources and personal that are able to pitch in and lend a hand during the process. And that his time was neck and neck with KTM during the summer.

The man was really proud of his crew and team, and I think he has every right for that.

All I have to say is wow about the Suzuki comments. They could have had a guy who runs up front all year on yellow Suzuki colors for the price of a couple of bikes and they don't even return his calls or emails. Assuming this is true and I personally believe Genova, Suzuki could be the worst run company in the industry.

What a great interview! He has hit the nail on the head about sponsorship. The point he makes about the NHRA Drag Racing is really true. That is a huge money sport with not a lot of live fan potential maybe due to the size of the facilities. The TV package IMO is fantastic, fast paced, great interviews and cool pit shots. I'm not even a big fan but I like watching it on TV. I think the sponsors know this and pump the bucks into it.

Supercross' image needs a revamp. We are basically looked at by the rest of the world in the same eyes as monster trucks (Feld). We will never be more than a sideshow to the masses, and never taken seriously as athletes. The "unsightly wart" of the sport know as FMX hasn't helped either. Who are we reaching out to as a fanbase? Who is our target audience/demographic? Based on what I see in the stands at most events, It would seem that it would be white-trash, flatbillers. Sorry, but I'm embarrassed by the way the sport is marketed.

Mike is a great interview, I admire his willingness to put things out there and it's just his opinion. Do I always agree with it? No but on a lot of things, he's right on the money. The sport does need more Mike Genova's spending his own money to go racing and I wish more people in position of power respected that.

Very good read - and read it with an open mind.

There is a lot of smart comments in there with regards to the sport, its health, and future.

Genova is an agent of change and that is a very hard role to be in.

I respect the guy a ton, but two things caught my attention that made me laugh.

1. "Our friends at the KTM Group are getting accolades for bringing out a new bike and winning with it. They did a great job, but we did basically something similar".

You don't really think you did something similar to KTM do you? They didn't build 400 bikes and get then to the states.

2. "We buy our bikes, and then we buy from the dealer and make it better. There is not much difference between a factory team and my team."

Buying your bikes from a dealer is a pretty big difference alone, not to mention all the other parts factory teams get.

The guy seems like one hell of a moto enthusiast, but some of the things he says makes me say WTF.

The Dungey replica bike is not nearly what the factory bike is it was a base to start with as the Rm was a base for motoconcepts to start with.
