It happened right in front of me and I'll never forget it. He was a good friend and I enjoyed racing against him. One of the saddest days of my life. I think this is a big part of the reason I quit riding and racing.

I was in that moto too. I remember seeing him crash, and every lap after he never got up.. I only new him through being on team green together, but the whole family seemed very nice.. I just remember after they told us about JD and called the races for the day as soon as i got back to the motel i called my mom and let her know. For me it was the first time a moto guy passed away on the track and that reality hit home. I still have my JD66 sticker in my garage tool box..

JBlain, sorry I dont have much info on Amy. She is now a nurse in the Galion ohio hospital, married with two daughters. spends most of her free time with horses, which is why she was even at the fair in the first place. she lives in the Iberia area, but I do not know her married name. If I find out anything I will pass it along
Thanks Jim! I knew she was married but cant remember her last name either.

Johnathon - Your name came up at Thanksgiving talking with the Mortons about that rainy weekend at the practice track (Thunder Valley ) near RedBud. Back when you were living up here and helping Mitchell Harrison. We were doing motors and suspension for Mitchell. I think there was some campfire silliness that my daughter still laughs about. Funny memories for sure.

Although I am much older than JD, Maximoff, Valade etc.....I had a 125 in 91 and 92 and would race 125B against those guys at Mustang and Baja. Although JD wasn't a D14 guy he had many friends here and I remember his family always being well liked. They were getting faster as i was getting slower.

I have the Valade's to thank for getting me back to racing in the late 80's. Dave had one of Beckington's old yamahas (blue wheels) that i bought and 2 weeks later was back at Mustang Acres racing. 4 weeks after that i had a new bike and was all in.

Sad to think back to the bad part with JD but glad to have the good memories also. So happy to have been around in those days.
Tom ZZZZZZZ!!!! How are you doin??? That was an awesome weekend! We had sooooo much fun. Is Thunder Valley still open? Track is sick! If you ever want to venture out to the Budds national, just let me know! Im about 1 1/2 from the track.

Are the Mortons done racing? I havent seen Alex or Gabby's name in any results this yr. Its sad if so, they are really good kids!

Will call you for Budds for sure.

That track has been open and closed a bit. I didn't ride there this years at all.

No MX for the Morton family. Not to highjack a thread but the subject of safety kept creeping into the conversation. Combine that with the travel and lifestyle that was going to be neccessary to go to the next level and they made a change. Alex is racing bicycles - Velodrome and Cyclocross. We even got big Alex back on the bicycle. The whole family is very involved and we talk and see them often.

Alex went to Jr Nationals on his first try and made the podium. He really has a gift for competition.

Great to hear from you.

As sad as it is....i'm glad a conversation about a former racer can bring old friends together.

Right on! What about Gabby? Nothing competitive?

I understand about the safety thing, but anything can happen, anywhere. I quit when JD passed but it was Big Ed that told me that JD would never want me to because of what happened.

I know what you mean about it being sad, but it means that he will never be forgotten. The way to keep our fallen is to keep talking and thinking about them. All I have to do is look at my tattoo for JD or call my son. He is named after him.

Wow, talk about a flashback! I was just going thru some old VHS tapes about a month ago and came across my race I had at Mustange Acres in D14 in the 125A where JD crashed out of the first moto which gave me the win and the second moto I was leading the entire race up the the last quarter of the last lap and JD was hot on my tail (goggles dangling from his bars), made the pass on me up top before we came back down to the finish, I was very geeked to be able to battle with him that little bit cause he was always faster than me.

I also remember them having huge stacks of trelleborg tires in their pit.

Hey TomZ! Good to hear you on here, hope to see you this coming race season, have a good christmas and new year....see ya.....Dave Horvath

I was much younger at the time but I remember how the loss of JD sent waves through D11.. it was all most folks talked about for quite a while. I wish I had a chance to know him, those were great days for D11 and the fast riders they were producing.
I have some of Jd's stickers if you would like some face book me and I will get them to you. Amy Collins

You all sound like a great group of people. I never met JD (or probably any of you) but he was lucky to have such a group of friends.

Sad to hear about Ed, enjoyed talking to him at the races when I'd see him. I used to buy Trelleborg tires from him. Sill have a JD66 sticker on my toolbox here at work and one of my old helmets from the 90's.

wow I signed up just to reply to this post because I randomly googled jd to see what the ole internet had to say about em. I was at the track that day also. maybe racing the 65 or 85cc class. My parents usually worked (staging, flagging, refereeing, registering, scoring, tallying and keeping series points) the races and my brothers and I just rambled around until our motos. Usually me being the oldest would have to go find the younger ones all the way down at the mud bog or somewhere 3 miles back on the mountain bike trails. But that day one of my brothers and I were were coming up the backside of the hill at (ocala motorsports park/hardrock)  to watch that race and my brother saw the first medic responding to JD. I think the medic may have even fell down the hill but she said it was bad right then. My question was how did it happen, because I was just getting to the point of doing that step down but never did after that. I had heard maybe he hit a big rock and it shot him off tha track? either way that whole back section was so scary. And yes that send off at orlando Supercross still makes me cry when I hear that damn mariah carey song with the R&B band ‘one sweet day’. I do believe he is watching us and having bo regrets that he passed while charging hard and having a great time in life.
