If those lowbagger club owners did the right thing to begin with, and payed the proper fees for the ability for bands to play cover songs, it would be a non-issue.

Every single club in this country that has live music, a jukebox, or just a cd player pumping out music has to pay those fees. It is well known.

He should have done his homework.

Exactly. The recoding industry is in shambles...and had this happened 10 years ago...it might of gone unnoticed.

Why should a club make money off their songs?

And Led Zeppelin? They are saint in all this? Obtain a license to play covers? How about you have a big steaming cup of shut the hell up!

If Musicians want license fees for some garage band covering their tunes, or even a tribute band doing the same, the music industry has hit a huge low. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

If anyone likes the tune are they going to buy the garage band's cd or the original.

Why should the club make money? They are paying for the electricity, the marketing drawing the crowd in. If Led Zep or Van Halen want to come and play, they know how to get a hold of the guy.

"Playing covers is a right of passage and there is no physical exchange of goods involved. This boils down to one thing, greed. Have these musicians’ vices gotten so out of hand that they have to stoop to this level. If you are a music fan, and especially a musician, I strongly urge you to consider what is going on here. Next, these guys will be trying to charge you for sharing oxygen with them at concerts."

Ghey!

The details of this are just starting to come to light but it seems that the members of Led Zeppelin and Van Halen have reached a new low in both human behavior and base capitalistic greed.

Colorado’s Vail Daily is reporting that Van Halen and Led Zeppelin are suing the Vail nightclub 8150, and its owner Steven Kovacik, for allowing bands to perform cover versions of the bands' collective songs. The plaintiffs are suing for ten counts of copyright infringement and, according to court documents, are asking for as much as $30,000 per song in damages.
"

Unfockingbelievable!!

You have to love the irony of Zeppelin - the king of the uncredited song snatch - trying to pull this shite. And how many times do you think VH played covers in clubs coming up.

Pure, unadulterated greed. Assuming they know about it and this isn't just some out of control bean counters and attorneys, I hope they both get torched on this one. Greedy fockers.

It seems that Van Halen And Led Zeppelin are targeting "tribute" Bands, These "tribute" Bands are going on tour and doing a complete show as the band. Infact the Zeppelin tribute band is called LEZ ZEPPELIN, and is a all girl band. Not saying its right or wrong,But these tribute bands are boarderline messing with copyright infringment. Its not like they are just playing a couple cover songs every now and then.

Lez Zeppelin just played this last weekend in Beaver Creek for Vail Resorts, who was a team of attorneys on that works for them. I'll bet Vail Resorts won't be in anyones cross hairs.

I'll bet that Vail Resorts is up to date on their BMG payments.

In other words, they pay the right people, just as everybody has to do. It is how the biz works.

Dont like how it works, Go start something different. Music industry is indeed in shambles. Go fix it, or stop complaining.

but, i think we can all agree that snowboarders suck.

I'm confused- the club owners made Van Halen and Led Zep, or the pitiful garage bands Rat like made them?

It's not a "rip off" when you go about things in the right way, If they ripped them off, Roy Obersin would have sued and won very easily.

Those clubs did NOT make bands like Van Halen who they are ! In those days it was a "pay to play" situation. The bands had to purchase a set amount of tickets for a set price,Then it was the bands responsabilty to try and sell all the tickets for what they could and try and make a profit.

These guys are no different than an inventor with a patent. They have created something original and use it to make money and are protected by the law.

Most inventors will not go after some guy who builds his own device in his garage that steals their patent idea for his own use. But as soon as that guy starts mass producing it and using it to earn his own living off the back of the person that invented it. They'll go after them hard.

I don't see any difference between the two scenarios. The average band that has a cover tune or two from different bands in their set is safe. The tribute bands are stealing their shtick, lock, stock, barrel and costumes.

With people downloading music for free, musicians are forced to turn to live performances to make a buck. If somebody out there is stealing their entire stage act, what would you expect them to do?
