1. I can promise you that Davey will find No Joy in the fact that the GPs are in a downward spiral.

2. If you lick frozen balls, even in Morgantown, your tongue will get stuck.

3. You Nay-Sayers are getting soooooo old that I'm going to have to go to Hawaii and do some surfing...just to fill some time between now & A1.

4. My Bounty offer is going up...

I'm not saying everything Guiseppe has done is right because it obviously isn't. No matter how you spin it all the riders should ALWAYS get at least something back for competing and thus contributing to the show. It's just inherently wrong otherwise. And he certainly hasn't made things easier with the astronomical starting fee.

But with that said....

This continuing problem of a decreasing gate attendance is also a symptom of the wider economic times we are currently living in (Europe is in turmoil, potentially on the edge of serious civil violence in places like Spain and Greece etc) and the fact is Motocross by nature has never been a big sport. That's always been its problem since the year dot. We've never reached the big leagues in terms of popularity, hence unlike a sport such as Golf for instance - the big money has never reached the lower ranks.

It seems to be a bit better in America but watching that "Inside the Outdoors" program yesterday you can clearly see a similar problem with a massive disparity between the handful of top guys who are making millions and the guys right behind them and a bit further back who are making little to nothing. Again, with the economy the way it is, MX globally (not just the GPs) is becoming more and more unviable.

Not sure what the solution is but though it's cool going to these far flung places, for the time being maybe the GPs shouldn't.

For me it's pretty damn obvious and makes sense - the gate is full and the race will have a new feel to it. There is nothing worse than seeing spaces on gates, please don't try and tell me there haven't been spaces on AMA line ups because that's BS.

Sure it's not to the liking of all but having a "world championship" means it has to try it's best and travel as much of "the world" as possible in a bid to bring investment from, and races to "the world" and it's people, how else can local riders who may be very very talented get to line up against the best in "the world" if they cannot fly around "the world" to other races?

Why start kicking off because an organisation has found a solution to a problem? Honestly the intelligence level is staggering. It comes down to finance plain and simple, the teams that can will, and those that cannot won't.

Let's just see how the races pan out and then make judgement, i reckon we are going to see some of the best 2nd moto's ever with top boys from each class bashing it out.

And it's not the fucking AMA nor is it a damn national championship so please stop trying to compare it you muppets.

Damn! Someone ets it.

i think the problem is American know-it-alls see the GPs the same way they see amateur championships and nationals. They are not the same. The world championship is a travelling show that goes to many countries. Like SX, you only need enough riders to put on the show. There is no point in shipping another 20 bikes and riders if the job can be done another way. Remember, teams took the idea to management, not the other way around. The nationals and amateur races are where privateers belong so they can work up and get hired. The GPs are just not the place for it, but with money you can do it, same as car racing. Its a rich kid's world.

The GPs are not there to pull the latest hotshoe privateers out of every BFE they go to. Shit, they are going to Qatar. You honestly want Qatar's privateers in the mix? They probably have one guy with a 24 carat gold scooter with lights.

Everyone likes prize money, but that isn't going to provide the bottom twenty much of a chance either. Teams and riders have worked it out another way. If you don't understand it, call the owner greedy I guess. Smile

Rules for the GPs require a minimum salary for each rider, paid by the team. Making this commitment is part of becoming an approved team.

When you see the GPs hopping from pace to place, it is money. The way it works over there, local, state or national authorities pay to have the event in their location. This is a completely crazy and foreign idea to Americans, but it didn't stop Feld from lobbying Vegas for fundage for bringing crowds there. The Spanish GP went away, read news on Spain's money problems right now. Qatar is fat on cash and wants to have some racing and promote itself. It's cheap for them.

It's not about drawing the last 5% of spectators that make or break the events. That is cutting it way too close to the bone when you have a GP series to run. Nats can squeak by.

Think of how many international cities you heard of because of racing- Le Mans, Monaco, Isle of Wight. It's not only because they drew crowds! Someone planned and paid for it (most of the time).

The guy running the nats likes to hang out here and be one of the fans. The guy running GPs puts a suit on and hangs out with the senator and minister of sport from some country itching to get some PR. Big deal. It's just different. Criticizing either for not copying the other on this makes no sense.

It's obvious that changes have to happen, since the expenses are outweighing the rewards for promoters and riders. The problem is that when you combine classes you lose a class or a fraction of both classes. The obvious solution is to lower entry fees first and then provide some type of bonus or relief to get the riders to show up. If you don't have racers, then how can you have a race?

Yes and no. I think maybe you just figured out what a sport really is like.

GPs are a traveling live TV show with motorcycles that promotes brands, riders, and places to a wide audience.

Is the NFL a "sport?" Do they do things to raise the level of "football-ness" in every city, or are they just doing TV shows for money? Switch on ESPN right now and see if the "sport" you find lives up to the expectations people have for moto (being a nanny for everyone participating), or is it a show?

that whole privateers thing is missed placed nostalgia, privateers can make a better living in national championships anyway

all promoters want the same GET PAID FOR BROADCASTING now its the other way around promoters pay for broadcasting (or give it away for free)

All three are the same, however a certain promoter is a Public Relation genius, must almost cry Smile

I think it is an interesting idea, and will be pretty cool to watch all the best riders in one moto tearing it up will be really cool.

The top 20 in each class will be awesome... that will be one super fast race! Herlings might have his chance against Cairoli again! It will be the best race of the day. How anyone can think that race will not be good to watch isn't a fan of the sport!

The GPs are not in a downward spiral, the series is so great to watch right now, there are so many good riders coming through, and so many already there, plus the 125 two stroke series and emx2 to show some of the young talent coming up on same stage, and they are having 18 GPs next season and taking it to a wider audiance, it is also extremely well presented and well run.

Don't forget they have a qualifying race on Saturday too and two practice sessions, plenty for the spectators see and the riders to get to ride the track....and more time than they would get on track at an AMA race even if they don't get top 20 to qualify to race the big combined race at the end of the weekend.

I believe the spectators and TV will love this idea.

I'd love to see the US nationals try it too... the racing would be mega, the top 250 guys against Dungey et all would be awesome!

This is not a new idea that Loungo thought up btw, the British Championship did it over ten years ago and a couple of times last year. The Red Bull Nationals run that way too in the UK and it is good to watch.

But to get on a GP team you have to pay around 200`000 bucks of your own money so all that bullshit about salaries becomes irrelevant. Even Suzuki factory team has only one covered rider, the other one rides on his own dime.
Little Guissepe`s dick was too small for F1 so he`s trying to make GP`s his own F1. There isn`t that much money in MOTOCROSS to run it as F1.

In europe there isn't enough money for MX or F1 either. But I bet Qatar, Brazil, thailand,...can pay for the top 20 guys to make the trip. I know it's not popular to say it but nobody cares about the others. A gate of 20 is enough and you will still have lapper problems. Lappers have screwed up so many good races this past year both in the nats or GP's it's not even funny

How American of you!

Did Zack Osborne pay 200K to ride GPs or did he do it because it was his best offer? He told me it was the best offer because when he turned pro about 2007/8, money here was dried up.

If every rider has 200K laying around to buy in, the GPs are in very good shape then. There must be an endless supply of rich kids, right? I doubt that's the true picture.

You say GPs can't run like F1, but I would say maybe they can't afford not to. If you tried to overlay the American MX model on Europe, it would keep GPs down to the American level- dirt floor tents, no power hookups in pits, no good cheese... Smile

I think this 'buying into a team' argument is a bit of a red herring.

Even if entry fees were reduced and YS paid (realistic) prize money the only privateers that could afford to run a whole GP season these days would be the lucky ones who have sound financial backing anyway. So whats the difference? It will always be a case of the 'Have's' and the 'Have nots'.

Its a damn expensive sport/world these days.

I do get to Europe when I can, and have been many times. The claim above was that "to get on a GP team, a rider has to pay 200K." It is not true, that's all. Buying your spot on a team is a good way to get around earning it, but it is hardly a requirement. F1 Auto racing is all rich kids playing anyway, whats the big deal?

Warthog's team for one year at least was all "pay to race" guys. They got Team of the Year.

I didn't see the same criticisms then. Smile I guess it's only a scandal when the Euros do it.

Seems like this thread is a good example of people seeing how racing really works, and they are angry and shocked-but don't need to be.

But it's damn hard to be leveled here since you only hear how crappy the GPs is, both from the few Euros and of course from the Americans. It's repeated every week, and after a while you start believing it. Like some propaganda shit, the famous Goebbles quote: "If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it". I guess poor GL is the Jew here!

I think there's some issues, always will be, but the previous "obvious" one is shattered right now (for me).

But hopefully for your sake (not for mine), you will tune out, and the broken record will be played again.

Two strokes could fix it...they can fix anything.
