I'm a 450 guy, but I say keep the cr 250. 2001 had a really good motor.

How much do you like to shim valves? 02 CRF sucks them pretty quick, but has a brutal hard hitting engine right off the bottom.

That's a bit old, especially considering it was the first CRF model released.

So you want to trade Honda's best ever two stroke 250 for their worst ever four stroke 450? Is this a joke?

Wouldn't make that trade if they threw 750 bucks on top... 10 year old 4 stroke is a major problem waiting to happen

I agree with the skeptics here, seems your are done with your bike despite it being a good one, and now looking for something new, a change, but that CRF would be the worse possible upgrade (downgrade) because it was flawed in every possible way, and now you have a decade of wear on it as well...

If you sell yours for $1500 (?), I'm sure you can find many better options.

Have to agree with the Dr. on this one. That CR was the last year of the non-case reed motor, very hot item. I forgot they even made a CRF back then. Wasn't Ryan Hughes on that thing for awhile?

Honda released a technical service bulletin for the first year CRF450 stating that "valve replacement should be considered routine maintenance" didn't they? More valves beat their way into those heads than any bike in history. Kibblewhite made a fortune selling stainless valves for those. Bad trade.

this thread is kinda funny. the twostrokers come to the defense of their bikes...but the 4strokers won't touch it. kinda speaks volumes about the state of affairs in used bike market.

I wouldn't recommend you to do that...

Already had a CRF 450 02 long time ago...

The bike handles really bad and engine is difficult to ride...

Never had any mechanical issue thought...

I believe is better you sell your bike, safe a little money and buy a modern 4 stroke....

I had a buddy with that bike new when it came out. He had about as much money in the motor as the purchase price after 3 years. I know this will be hard to believe but he bought a yz 250f for his son and that for himself at the same time and the 250f would actually outlast the crf450 hands down in terms of hours on the motor. This guy was good with maintenance as well, money wasn't an issue and it was always properly maintained. That bike is heavy on top of everything wrong with it mechanically.

A nice 01 CR250 would sell for not much less than a nice 2008 CRF450. If I was aiming at a used 450, that's where I would start. The 08 model still draws rave reviews.

I had one new and had a great season on it. I raced most weekends at expert level and only burned a clutch up at the very end of the year.
Good bike but would I buy a ten year old one ????

I second the recommendation for finding an 08 if you want a 450 and are looking at staying with a Honda. Another good friend picked up his cherry 08 for $2800 a couple years ago. He found a lot of them around 2500$ with more time on them but this one was clean. He still spends about 650$ a year going through the top end but it has been a great bike for him. I wouldn't doubt you would get around 2k for your 01, that is an excellent year Honda. Defiantly worth spending the extra 800-1000 if you want a thumper. Riding the 02 and 08 crf back to back is eye opening.
