This became the "US excuse" thread. This is starting to get annoying, and I am an American.

There is no "real motocross surface" period.Lommell is as motocross as you can get. Let's not start redefining "motocross" to suit our riders!

Better red flag the moto's when it starts to rain from now on also. Don't want anyone with an unfair advantage who gets to ride in it all the time (Not people from the Southwest, Australia, or Africa among many more dry regions)

You guys took what I said out of context. First of all we ALL ride dirt in this sport.....not all of us have the luxury of having a sand track around to practice on. The "Euro guys" even have said " There is NO PLACE like Lommel"......and they are right.

Having it hot and dry , or muddy..........that's the friggin' weather we are talking about here........it gets hot and cold every where.....so that argument is a moot point.

Altitude.......there are ways to train for this too. Are we saying there is no high altitude tracks in Europe now?

And moto soul.......you're right....there is no one track surface.......but 99% of the tracks ARE DIRT! Am I wrong? Am I wrong in saying since Lommel is a "one of a kind" type track? Because the Euro guys have even said it was.......our American riders have said it was......and just about every single person on this site that has seen it....says it is.

That is why i said " Bring this race back to the dirt". We can't control the weather , but we can and have trained a human body to deal with high altitude. The track surface......IS something we can control......and it makes it a level playing feild when everyone can ride on dirt........because that IS what most tracks are.

You guys don't see my point here huh?
When a lot of Euros say "There's no place like Lommel" I'm pretty sure most will agree with me in referring to the tracks on the circuit,Lierop is usually mentioned in the same breath to be fair, equally as hard work but does ride different,Valkensvard to a lesser extent, but they are obviously a significant step more demanding

In Europe Sand tracks are very common, even in the UK they are too,in a National series anywhere over here you'd expect to ride a certain amount of the stuff. The GPs have always incorporated sand tracks in their series,it's taken for granted and normal for us to see over here, many of us speak of the diversity of all the tracks

I totally see your view as the US only really has Southwick as a true sand track in the Nationals,I've only been to Glen Helen over there and while you might put me right, most of the other tracks I've watched on TV look fairly similar

While I would probably only make it 2-3 laps before pumping up, riding Lommel (and Lierop) would be 3 of the most fun laps I've ever ridden in my life. Herlings went from last to second in half a race... there were lines everywhere. I don't care about his "superior" skill. Dungey not being able to get around Alessi at Washougal was one lined and let's not question the skill level between those two.

But "dirt" is open to interpretation. We talking Red Bud loam or hard pack with stones at St Jean d-Angeley? They're both dirt. At this point it's just friendly conversation. I get your point but I just think it's unfair to say that since it's apart of the 1% that it should be relegated. In saying that it is in turn unfair to the 1% who excel in it better than anything else. We have evolved the sport in America to OUR liking. Apparently sand doesn't equate in to that for the average American (Barcia is apparently our saving grace). Coldenhoff was Netherlands weak link and anywhere but the sand, with that team, they wouldn't have been a podium threat but this race made them a contender on paper (and until he dnf'ed and the entire team was on the ground in the first corner of Moto 3). Take away the sand and Glen/the team is a moot point and no one cares about them (besides the Dutch). It has it's plus' and minus'. The same way Cairoli having asthma has it's plus' at low altitude and minus' at high altitude.

If anything it shows how we THINK we are masters of all terrain until we forget that we haven't raced on that terrain in decades. Again, not the rest of the worlds fault. That's a choice made by us. The world doesn't revolve around us and neither does the des Nations.

Man, I loved watching that Lommel race. Barcia used to race District 34 and although I was hoping for a USA win I enjoyed watching Herlings rip through the sand and pass Barcia with ease. Lommel is a unique sand track and it did favor the sand specialists but I still thought that our team gave it 100% and luck just wasn't on our side. Great race!

We have 2 tracks very close by where I live
One's more hardpack, the other is a sand track
The sand track is by far the busiest
Most riders actually prefer to train there
I like both, change it up from time to time

I am sure there is somewhere in the United States of America that has similar sand where a track could be built, good chance there already is.

Australia has sand tracks like Lommel , though most of them in Western Australia, most of our riders are based on the East Coast of Aus, but some how still develop the skills to race the deep sand on the West when the national series ventures there.

Motocross is about racing on all types of surfaces, on motocross tracks. Be it Hard Pack, Loam, Sand or anything in between.

Bringing it back to a loam type track that you see at 90% of the AMA tracks now is not bringing it back to a level playing field, it is bringing it back to an American playing field!

Why should the MXoN suffer and be restricted to one type of racing surface just because the American series has headed in a direction where the dirt is similar at a lot of venues due to a man made decision.

Comments about practice. It's not like the track named to race on was a last second decision and the race was to be held the very next day. If you are to wait until you have about a week to try and get practice and good setups then that's a good recipe for losing.
Yes that sort of thing crossed my mind too,if indeed there are track similar in the US,maybe they could have done a bit there, anyhow Lommel is on the GP circuit, its no secret and many Americans have ridden there too,Zach,Leib,Hamblin,Brown, off the top of my head, surely with DeCoster

team USA knew how these tracks are

Racer X reports of not getting set ups right,is this for real? 10 days to practice in sand,Saturday practice and qualifying,Sunday practice etc and they still couldn't get it right?
These are supposed to be some of the best in the business,I find it difficult to believe that,if not its a poor show,I'd say maybe when it gets to that point its more like lack of technique and experience as the place got rougher

Barcia lived upto his sand specialist tag in his last ride, when he took revenge on some of the top MX1 guys,he didn't exactly look totally comfortable but got a good result, his fitness was there too as he re-passed Paulin who faded

Just some thoughts

Jeez guys, the whole pod cast was just one big excuse. "ALL those guys train there all week ..... yada yada". Really? Roczen has been here for almost 2 years, and Nagl has leg injured the entire season. That leaves the weak link Schiffer who was racing in the German champuionsips hardpack. These are the guys who kicked our butts, we only want to compare our performance wih Tony and Jeffery. What's to compare? They lapped us.
Look, When are we gonna learn to give credit where credit is due. Finding a million reasons why we got spanked is humiliating. Can not we just accept it and move on?

i'm with the guys 'for lommel', it was an awesome event and places like there and lierop are amazing to watch the extra technique required........i think the best in the world should have to ride rough gnarly tracks.....and the lack of variety in surface in the us series is making it a bit dull and i was pleased to see at least unadilla got nasty...

i would like to see more technical natural tracks rather that the big triples and monster jumps.....this is not a long distance jumping contest or a freestyle demo.....i think track designers should go back and look at what tracks used to be like, i'm not saying go back to flat track and fast but its all become a bit jump focused and theres more to riding than a big jump

There indeed is no place like Lommel. Lierop comes close, but it still is different.

But i do not agree with the statement that 99% of the tracks are dirt. In the USA maybe, but not over here. In Belgium i think it's 50/50 between sand tracks and dirt tracks. In the UK the same i think. But in Holland most tracks are sandtracks. So no, Lommel is nothing special like you seem to think. It's just a motocross track, just like there are other tracks.

i enjoyed every minute of the broadcast, and i don't think i would enjoy riding there. at all.

that said, these guys are the best in the biz, they should be able to adapt without months or years of sand under their belt.

and saying sand tracks shouldn't be part of the MXdN is silly. sand is dirt. a different type, but it's dirt all the same.

win some, lose some. Lommel favored the GP guys, and there will be tracks that the Euro guys can't come close to the US.

you can change the world championship without being a good sand rider

maybe now you understand what a great performance these guys have done Brad Lackey, Danny LaPorte. Trampas Parker, Donny Schmit etc

the same for Euros who have won in Supercross
