Monster Energy Cup Track Design Finalized

Ricky Carmichael-Inspired Track to Challenge World’s Top Riders

AURORA, Ill. (September 26, 2012) – Feld Motor Sports®, along with 15-time AMA National Champion Ricky Carmichael, finalized the track design for the second-annual Monster Energy Cup at Las Vegas’ Sam Boyd Stadium on October 20.

The 2012 Monster Energy Cup features an all-new track design inspired by Carmichael. The Carmichael-inspired track design will consist of supercross and motocross obstacles unlike any other racetrack design in the world.

This year’s all new track design will feature a 200’ banked sweeping turn that will be built up into the stands, a split start consisting of two 11 rider starting gates separated 220’ apart from each other before they converge at the apex of the 300’ start straight inside the stadium and for the first time ever, a joker lane, will be used. The joker lane will consist of deep sand and take the riders out of the track circuit for approximately six seconds before reentering the track. Every rider will be required to use the joker lane one time during each of the three Main Events.

After racing through these sections of the track, fans will be treated to equally exciting racing lanes that are built into the Monster Energy Fan Zone, which is located outside of the stadium. The Monster Energy Cup posts a $250,000 purse with the winner walking away with a $100,000 check, and any rider that wins all three Main Events will take home $1 million.

“We added all kinds of unique ideas to this year’s track, and I am excited to see how the racing unfolds this year,” said Carmichael. “The most controversial part of this year’s track is – without a doubt – the joker lane. It’s never been used in competition, and this is going to require a lot of strategy.”

“This year we started with a clean slate and created one of the most unique race tracks ever built,” said Todd Jendro, vice president of two-wheel operations, Feld Motor Sports. “Having Ricky Carmichael involved in the design process brings a one-of-a-kind perspective to an event of this magnitude.”

They definitely are remedying the lack of passing which was an issue last year. The speeds are gonna be as fas as we have ever seen. Hope everyone makes it through unscathed.

Yes, but from the looks of the video its going to be much slower than the main line. Would have been cool if it were a little closer inline and might be a passing option if someone were to take the risk.

It's designed to be slower, that's why it's mandatory once per rider per main. I like how it's up to the rider to decide which lap to use it.

wow I think you might be right. Like if RV has won two motos and is leading in the third they might be waiting in the joker lane to sabotage him by trying to throw something in his spokes maybe.

It might be possible if the joker lane is like a dark alley sort of with a roof and the cameras can't see what's happening in there.

Fuck monster if they would do that to their own rider THATS FUCKED UP!!!

...Seriously ?

You guys are already bagging the Jokers lane and forming ridiculous conspiracy theories all while the only layout of the track you've seen is a computer generated model... C'mon Man.

It's a race feature, and a new one at that, and I personally think it fits perfectly for a one off event such as the MEC.

Give the track and the joker lane a chance, if it doesn't work out then just do something else next year.

I think the Joker lane idea is pretty awesome. It will definitely make for some interesting racing. I'm curious to see what kind of strategy the riders are going to use when it comes to that option on the track.

I like how they stole the talladega turn name from GH (and GH stole it from nascar Tongue ). I guess that first turn at GH had an impact on RC. Hopefully it's as cool as it seems.

Ok, not into the 'joker' lane? Is it really a joke? Seems like it. Not real mx/sx here, not that part, the rest looks real good. Just imagining, slower guy waits for faster guy to hit 'joker' so is ahead, that part comes up, slower guy checks up, tries to make faster guy go through the joker again, maybe faster guy just goes for it, slow guy ends up not doing it and getting a big lead? Stupid. If anything like that, it should be a high-risk section, with a low-risk but slower option.

I kind of like that joker lane idea guess w will see how it works out, hopefully no one gets destroyed at the merge on the start or coming out of the sand. A big huge banked turn up into the stands, Awesome! But that name reminds me of another place I'd rather see. Not to be too negative but hopefully they found some better dirt than the rubble from last year. I really am looking forward to watching this again.
