Maybe it wasn't the best decision to slow after the jump, but the track design "suggested" to riders that was the thing to do. The riders were just following the track. I hope the track designers are paying attention and don't make the same design mistake in the future.

Not Josh's fault at all, IMO. I hope he's ok, and the same goes for Jeff. Can't wait to see 'em both back on the track.

Here's Michael Byrne on the white flag lap. It gives you an idea of his line, and a general idea of how high and far people were jumping off that particular jump.

Here's Josh hitting the finish line jump as he takes the checkers. You get an idea of his line, and how far he jumped.

And finally, here's James Stewart as he took the checkers...

Here's where they ended up after the crash. If I had to pick a point where they collided, I'd guess it'd be about where the two Fastrac logos are alongside the track at the point where Matt Boni's front wheel is.

Add in some slow-mo audio of a spectator yelling, "Noooooooooo...." and that's about what it was like to watch it.

Now do you have a better idea of what happened?
Well its pretty clear to me who was at fault, judging from all the picture evidence.

I say a 2 race ban!

When did Unadilla move the finish to Gravity Cavity? Nothing like ripping up the hill to the finish only to have to launch into orbit with a flat landing to beat your competition.
The old finish was a lot safer. Drag race out of a soft rutty corner to the checker with lots of open area after.

Glad to hear they are both OK relatively speaking.

It seems like someone is always getting landed on at Unadilla. I think putting the finish line on that jump was stupid.

With SH 105 comments along with some of the other first hand accounts, this whole deal was bad. No matter how Josh crossed the line, he was getting landed on that day. Like SH said, JA overjumped that thing by a mile. Even the design of the track/jump was meant to have a landing at a given distance from the takeoff. In this case, that landng was overshot, look at the photos. I know I jumped to conclusions, and unfortunately, made a comment that was incorrect regarding the blame. The weird part is, Jeff Alessi could have snapped both his feet again had he flatlanded this. What was he charging for, why did he pin it like that, or was it whiskey throttle? Glad it did not turn out worse, here hpoing the situation does not happen again.

Thanks you guys for commenting back-it really does mean alot to Josh for people to know what happened. I just wish that everyone on these forums realized how often and how man y riders and riders families read your comments. So if your going to write something and have it in black ink just make sure you are willing to back it and have a valid point. Many of you are much more experienced riders than i am, but i know Josh and he knows how to ride-sucks to have people question your judgement, when you have been doing something your whole life. He read all the comments and truely appreciates the support and the "debaters" also....very entertaining....

That really is a dumb place for the finish line. I've got plenty of tapes of RC, James and others launching out of the cavity to make a pass over the years.

I blame the AMA for forbidding the use of parachutes.

If Alessi had a parachute on he could have pulled the ripcord when he saw Summey in his flight path and safely floated to the ground while summey rode unharmed to the pits.

Sometimes shit just does happen.

Depends on whether you're defense or plaintiff side. Wink

Seriously, though, the legal doctrine of assumption of risk, when it applies, can pretty much be reduced to "because of the inherent nature of the activity, in some cases shit happens."

He was in a drag race for the finish with another rider, Jimmy Albertson, according to TWMX

First let me clear this up- For people that are writing on this forum about the accident at Unadilla, that werent even there, all you can do is speculate and you end up sounding stupid when you dont know what you are talking about. I am Summeys fiance, and i want to set the record straight-first off it had nothing to do with his diabetes("wildbill")-that was just ignorant to even say, his blood sugar coming off the track was 130-which is completely normal. Now for who is suppose to accept blame in this matter??? Neither person! It was just some freak accident that happens in this sport sometimes- Josh is an intellegent rider and knows not to STOP after the finish line-he jumped about half the distance they were normally jumping and was still moving off the track-Alessi and Albertson were battling and Alessi way over jumped-it was just bad all together- They both hate that it happened, but sometimes shit just happens. Alessi called Josh while he was at the hospital and apoligized for what happened-neither rider had control over this situation and it was just unfortunate-good news is they are both ok.
I guess they forgot to tell you that the internet isn't real and that what's said here doesn't mean shit. At least that's what I've always heard (sarcasm alert).

Holla!!
