Purchased an in wall dog door yesterday and after deciding where to put it, checked for studs and measured the hole for the frame. Got the hole cut out, but to my surprise, there is what looks to be a support beam taking up about half of the needed space(not talking about the diagonal board). My stud finder did not pick up on it because it doesn't touch any part of the wall. It backs up against another stud forming a "T" shape. The house is a two story house and the doors just to the left of the hole are french doors. I assume that since it backs up next to a normal stud, that this is reinforcement because of the door and second story.

I'm assuming my best option is drywall repair and find another spot for the door, or is there any way I can cut the support and still use the existing hole?

That looks like a pretty good size hole.
Find a cabinet door with hinges with a lock that will cover it....and paint it to match the wall.
Use the space to stash a loaded sawed-off 18inch pistol grip shot gun for home defense and or a small baseball bat (perfect area - right by a door easy to get to).
Stick like a big fake plant or tree in front of it to make the door not so noticeable in low light,hide key to lock in the plant.

I seriously wouldn't cut those studs....I assume they are there for a reason.

Maybe MotoSmith will see this thread and offer up some advice.

It looks like a 1 x 6. If it is, it's probably not structural. It also looks like the left edge is up against the king stud for the door framing. Sometimes framers will add shit like that if they go off layout for drywall but it's set back from the inside of the wall so that isn't it. Those two bent over nails look like something was mounted to the other side like an electrical box. Wrap your fingers around it and see if you can feel anything on the other side. Is there a porch light up higher? If nothing is there I say chop it out.

Yup. Find a Harbor Freight and get that oscillating saw they have for 30 bucks. It will cut that out and the let in brace. You'll end up using it for other shit if you're a do it yourselfer.

Eddy- Appreciate it, and will likely do something like that if this doesn't work out.

borg- Yes, it's up against the stud that I would guess is the frame for the door. Reaching around the support, there are no wires or anything behind the board. I believe they're just holding the diagonal board on.

The let in does give you some shear but most places in CA don't even require it anymore. Shear comes from the exterior wall covering. It's pretty much all struct 1 plywood or osb. Cutting that let in wont hurt a thing.

Is that foam I am seeing? Does you house have EFIS on the exterior?

If that's foam you might want to think twice about cutting that diagonal brace. It's there for shear and that foam isn't going to give you any shear strength.

I have never seen foam attached directly to the studs. Normally the foam is applied to some type of sheathing.

Ive seen the foamboard applied directly to the studs before. First thing I thought was WTF.

My house has sheet foam attached directly to the studs. I have metal sheer straps instead of wood like this picture. Won't hurt a thing to cut that brace it's at the very bottom of the run.

Just cut the boards and install the door you'll be fine. The door itself will provide just as much / or more stability than those two boards.

Its there for shear value, don't listen to anyone who says other wise. IMO sinse its at the bottum of the wall, you should be good cutting it. Most stucco exteriors provide enough shear value on their own and by the looks of that foam and you being from AZ its probably a 1/2 or an 1/8 inch stucco system, I think you would be ok cutting it. The stud its attached to isn't a king stud, its probably there being used as a nailer for the 1x, you can cut that out. when you pull either one out, go slow as the lathers most likely stapled into them and it will crack your exterior if you start yanking.

But I can assure you that there is no way that I would allow the design of foam attached directly to the wood studs, and plaster or EFIS applied to that foam. Plaster is only as strong as what it's adhered to.,and EFIS on foam would have no shear value at all. I honestly don't get it, Densglass is .70 or .80 cents PSF and a gyp sheathing would be around .50 cents. If someone can't afford to do something right, then they don't need to be building anything to begin with.

We have only been in the Phoenix market for a short time now, but as of today I haven't seen anything like this on any of our shopping centers.

Foam attached directly to the studs as an insulator with stucco embbeded in lath over the top is done all the time. Stucco embeded into wire lath has 180 pounds per foot of shear value and in most areas is acceptable for bearing llateral loads with out OSB or diagonal sheating. It will carry a heavier lateral load then desglass and gyp. Now remeber, I'm talking stucco, not plaster or EIFS, an EIFS system has zero shear value and like I said earlier should never be applied directly to the studs for several reasons.

You wont find anything like this in any commercial job anywhere. You being a commercial guy you know how thick a spec book is for every job and how while every job is different, the spec book is somewhat the same. Houses are built closer to local building and engineering codes. They are all based on earthquakes, wind speed rain etc etc, while commercial holds closer to ICBO specs and engineering.

You mentioned Densglass and exterior gyp board, I have yet to see either one on a house, while I have seen and installed miles of it on commercial projects. Yes removing something that is designed to stop lateral movement may take away from the structual value, I would think he would be fine if his house has stucco. between the stucco and the drywall, it has plenty of shear value.
