I've been looking for a 125 for a little while now. i've been looking mostly at YZ's, because there are plenty of them available and they're cheap (and reliable) and RM's, because I've always had a Suzuki. I have tried to trade my 2010 RM-Z for them, but no-one wanted to pay the difference. It just so happens that I was trying to sell my Yamaha XS 400 street bike also, and I noticed that someone wanted to trade a 2008 RM125 for a two cylinder old Japanese street bike. I called the guy and after a week he agreed to do the trade.

Me and my buddy packed the XS into his boxvan and drove 600km (~400miles) to do the trade. The bike was as the guy said and we traded bikes and I got my very first two stroke! Smile

I started motocross relatively late (at 24 years of age) 5 years ago and my first bike was a used -06 RM-Z 450 that I bought together with my little brother. My next bike was a used -07 RM-Z 450 with a Athena 490cc big bore kit! After that I bought a brand new 2010 RM-Z 450, so I've never had small bore bike or a 2-stroke. Lately I haven't been able to ride very much (11-monts old baby girl!! Smile ) and the 450 is killing me. I've tried my brothers' 250f and it just doesn't do it for me. I've also tried a 250 2-stroke and that is just way too much bike for me, so the idea of getting a 125 seemed to be the right one for me. And now I got one!!

So here she is:

And there she is with my thumper in the background

I'm not going to do a full scale rebuild as many here have done, I'm just going to ride her as hard as I can!!

I just went through it. The previous owner was maybe a little bit out of it, he said that it has winter settings in the carb and that's why it runs rich. I opened the carb and it was in stock jetting Smile I then put the forks and shock to factory settings. The forks were interesting, the left side compression was fully closed and the right side fully open! Laughing The rebounds were fully closed. The shock was way of also and the guy was 20kg (~40pounds) heavier than me and the sag was 120mm for me without my riding gear on! Laughing

I did a short test run in our yard and the bike ran perfect! Can wait to get her to the track! Smile

BTW, do you think that thread title will get me into trouble with your government? Laughing

Nice story. Happy for you.

Just do ONE little thing for me, ok? If you aren't going to tear it down and rebuild, at least remove the Monster graphics. They are awful.

Have fun on the bike!

I had an '07 RM125. It handled better than any other bike I have ridden. Didn't have as much bottom end as some other 125's, but still had plenty of power. I had a fair bit of trouble with the motor, but some of that was my fault. Have fun on it.

I also agree with the other guys - ditch those Monster graphics ASAP.

This year still needs the expensive spark plug, right? Make sure you do or it can cost you a cylinder.

The previous owner had ridden off-road with it and the strap was there so he could pull it out of a mudhole if he sank it to the seat. I removed it when I went trough the bike. (allthough I´m going to use one if I ever race this hometown event: http://youtu.be/2mjT5oAaX1E).

I´m not going to remove the graphics even though they´re not to my liking either. I´ve never been much into how a dirt bike looks but more into how it works so I have no intention of using money for a graphics kit! If find some for free, then I just might do it Laughing

I read about the sparkplug on the internet and I´m going to use the special plug just to be safe. I still have to change the tyres and adjust the sag before I take her to the track. It looks like I´m going to have to wait untill next weekend though Sad

You couldnt ride the 250 2 stroke but you started off on a 450 and then a 490? Just goes to show you how 4 strokes do not teach people how to ride. For a beginner rider I think it is much safer to learn on a 2 stroke. I ride 4 strokes and love them, but think that for a beginner level rider, it doesnt teach them the right fundamentals.

450 4-stroke is a lot easier to ride than a 250 2-stroke so I don´t see why do you think it´s so bad. I tried the 250 2-stroke and didn´t like it so I didn´t get one.

And for the fun and fundamentals, thats what I got the 125 for now! Wink

I thought I´d post something now that I have actually had the chance to ride the thing. That thing is FUN! Even though you have to work more to keep your laptimes down the little bike doesn´t wear you out like the big thumper does.

I clocked a few laps on a full scale motocross track. I did 2.22 on the 125 and 2.20 on the 450, so not a big difference. My little brother did 2.17 on his 250f and 2.18 on my 125.

Yesterday we were on a private supercross-style track that was a bit muddy. It was hard to keep the 125 on the pipe without spinning the rear wheel too much. After a good day of riding on the 125 I hopped on the 450. That thing has so much traction and torque it was so easy to ride on the slippery stuff and all the jumps were so easy to clear. In those conditions the 450 was easily many seconds a lap faster than the 125 even though the lap times were close to the one minute mark.

Couple of pics from yesterday:

Back in the mid 90's I rode a KX500, my buddy had a RM 125. We swapped bikes one day for a half hour moto, then I jumped back on the Kwacker. I saw God that day. I didn't have a stopwatch, but I'm fairly certain my laptimes dropped that moto. Almost bought a 125 to practice on. Lol.
