I noticed that Ponca has only 891 entries this year. I may be mistaken, but in past years the entries have been 2500+, correct? I have not had a chance to follow Norman much yet.

Is that due to the split of the two nationals? Not so much factory support? Economy excuses?

.

Sad when the Oklahoma Nationals are having rider turnouts that could be similar to a local / regional rider turnout.

Kind of hard to have two "Nationals" on the same week only a few hundred miles apart.

Some classes at both nationals only have 1 to 3 guys. At Norman in the +30A Mike Sleeter went 1-1 against himself to win the title.

The way they count riders at Ponca in the past is by entries so multiply 891riders x 3classes = 2673 entries

Which could be why it says 891 entries instead of 891 riders... so with your math 297 riders?

It is 104* outside. I surely wouldn't want to be riding in 104* weather.

Entries are down all over the country and have been for several years. Having two races in Oklahoma at the same time does not help either race and I bet lots of riders decided to do LLs and bypass the Oklahoma races all together this year.
I checked out the new ponca track a few weeks ago and after the same basic layout for the last 35 years the new layout sure looks good. Never been to the Norman track so I cant say how good or bad it is.

gas being over $3 a gallon along with all the other expenses would be my first guess on the low turnouts.
mx is dead here in mississippi. I remember going to am nationals and having 200 riders in one class. Those
days are long gone.

SRAC in Colorado would do 600+ riders every weekend and the Greeley SX in the 80s had to run qualifers in all classes but now with the SRAC vs RMXA I dont think they get 600 riders between the two of them.

I counted up last years NMA Ponca numbers and got 2005 entries total, including DNS. NMA took it in the shorts bad this year with only 511.

It sucks. The track would be alright for a local night time track, but that's it.

The guy in Norman blew it.

The only winner with this deal is MX sports.

If by the guy in Norman you mean Ron and the NMA you are correct. If you mean the track owner Rodney I strongly disagree.

I don't want to get in your pissing match, but I don't believe that Ron was the one building the track and seeing to it that the facility was up to par.

Sounds like the guy in Norman didn't want to put enough of his own skin in the game. That's too bad because you only get one shot at something like this.

We can disagree without a pissing match I would think.

Norman is what it is, you're only going to do so much with a square piece of woodless flat ground. However no one else in Oklahoma has even come close to putting out as much effort as OMC has in trying to give a quality place to ride week in and week out. With that said I think we found out that people cared more about the Ponca City national than it being the NMA national.

I suspect a lot of people elected to just skip both events this year to see how the deal played out. I definitely had conflicting feelings about it. I want OMC to do well and continue to improve, so I wanted the NMA national to do well despite my strong dislike of Ron. I also didn't want the Ponca City National to disappear as well.

Do you think both races will be back next year? My guess is no.

Who know's?

I believe that Ponca has a chance, but I don't think Norman has a prayer. It takes a much larger track than what's in Norman.

Close to 900 riders isn't bad. Ponca had such a bad rep before that it may take a few years for the new promoter to restore it to it's former glory.

Maybe that bad rep was from the promoter...... Not the track. Granted Ponca is pretty flat compared to places in Colorado we have raced at, but at least they try to have off cambers and bermed turns. One pic of Norman made it look like the go-kart track right next door. We were there for the State race and sitll didn't see where they would have parked everyone if they had a 2000 entry event. Oh, we don't have to push the bikes at Ponca this year!

LL is in a flat area of TN. Not a lot of elevation change.

People just want a decent track at an event like this. Ponca wasn't bad, but the Norman track was way to short.

The NMA should have gone to Oak Hill if they were going to leave Ponca. It's already an NMA track and it's well liked by the national level kids.

I can't argue with this, it just goes back to the NMA's poor decision making. I can't fault Norman for taking the race that was offered to them and doing their best to make the most of it.

When i think of Norman all i think of is a Supermoto track. I think if the NMA offered the race to Angel Ridge they would get that track in top condition for a race that size. I havent ridden either track in awhile since we built our own but last time i was at norman we left after an hour.

Does Ron understand what this means? The MX community would rather go to Ponca or stay home than attend his event. I hope he can swallow some pride and take a step back. If he continues to divide everyone I'll never attend a NMA event again.
