My wife works pretty good, unless I have a good battle going on, then she gets all caught up in that and doesn't hit the timer.Angry

I use this one

DMC Moto-Trainer Lap Timer

Its cheap and fits on the handlebar and works pretty well. My friend has the Garmin MXD mentioned. That one is cool because you can chart everythng with the GPS. Here is a sample moto from the Garmin:

I've used both the DMC and the LSP timers. While it's working, the LSP timer cannot be beat. It has a little green light that blinks if the lap you just did is your fastest of the session (moto), a little red one that blinks if you're a second or more slower than your fastest lap, and they both blink if you're within a second of your fastest lap. You have no idea how hard you push to get a green light. The down side is that they just don't live - I get an average life of about 20 hours out of them. The little DMC timer is pretty cool as a back-up. It's totally reliable and not very expensive but it's a little hard to hit the button sometimes and you don't get any on-track / real time feedback.

I probably should have mentioned that. I probably get the same amount of time out of them...

I have two LSP lap timers. When one stops working, I put on the 2nd one, and send the broken one to an electronics buddy. It takes him 5 minutes to check over the circuit board and fix anything thats broken. Its usually the power wires from the battery pack, where they are soldered to the circuit board that come loose. But, things on the board have gone out too.

I also use a Garmin GPS watch (Forerunner 305) and it's excellent!

It has a big display, so you can see your lap times, and you don't need to press any buttons to get the lap time. Just choose a slow corner and mark the lap there. It will automatically time each lap afterwards.

The other advantage is that you connect it to Garmin's website and download all your practices, workouts, etc.

Does the Garmin Forerunner 305 provide the same data as shown in that CJMX's post/photo above?

Anything with a push button is a waste of money. No way are your reflexes going to be accurate enough even if you do remember to hit the button each lap. Your much better off with gps or a timer with a beacon.

I don't push the button over jumps... I push it in the slowest corner on the track, using a marker (rock, branch... whatever is there). Over jumps, you don't have a 'pin-point' reference to click it at, and your usually moving too fast to be very accurate.

If your reflexes are not good enough to get within a tenth of a second, you should probably consider a different hobby... If your reflexes are 'decent' you can get within a few hundreths. But for me, tenths are just fine.

As far as remembering to push the button... If you can't remember to push the button, your lap times are not very important to you, and yeah... you wasted your money.

Why would you need to be so accurate? Does .05 of a second really matter? For moto, I would think that it would have to do with seeing how much you are fading late in a session.

Yes it does Rob.

All you have to do is log in to connect.garmin.com and upload your data from the watch via USB.

I have the garmin forerunner 310xt. I absolutely love it. I also wear the hr monitor when I ride and the garmin connect site will show me my hr all around the track. I found that in the sections where my hr spikes I am usually holding my breath. I would go out and focus on riding those sections and breathing. It is a complete training tool. To me, the fact that it tells you lap times is just a plus.

So to clarify, with the 310XT you mark a point on the track on the first lap, and then it records lap times each and every lap thereafter without having to press anything?

Correct. There are a few ways to accomplish it. You can program it to lap from where you pressed start, from where you pressed lap or from where you marked the lap to start from. The way I did it was to ride one lap and stop. Then I saved that as a "course" and every time I go to that track I just recall that course, hit start from the pits or anywhere and it automatically laps off the original start finish line that I recorded. The only time I have to re-record the "course" lap is if they move the start finish line. It is less accurate than transponders but it's far more accurate than I need and more accurate then me pressing lap at the same spot every time. I'm looking for a couple of seconds of variation per lap on a 2:00+ course, not tenths of a second.

To clarify, there are a few garmin watches with this feature, I just happen to have the 310XT because it fit my wrist the best.

Same for the 305.

Usually I just pick a slow turn and press the lap button once.

After that, every time I go through that turn it will automatically register a lap.
