Yeah, when you are renting, you pay taxes-part of the rent pays for property taxes. Property taxes aren't federal taxes (which is what I think we're talking about).

One thing this thread illustrates, regardless of political leaning/affiliation, is that the tax laws are way too complex and convoluted for this country.

Flat tax + National sales tax. And be done with all of the shelters and write offs. That would be fair, wouldn't it? (I'm sure we'll hear squawking from both ends of the spectrum).

We had a janitor girl up here whose refund was more than she earned all year, add in welfare and food stamps then they aren't paying taxes. Your last statement is just plum crazy. Welfare and food stamps have become a way of life for some and I would guess most poor folks are enjoying not working, Obama is giving them what they want for votes, it's not helping anyone but the lazy.

I could live with a flat tax, I would pay a little more but so would a lot of folks.

I've been in favor of this for years. No matter how much you make, a certain percentage goes to taxes. No ifs, ands or buts and no bitching, pay it and go on.

Totally agree.

Draw a demarcation line at about $24k/yr-everything else is 8% until you hit $200k/yr then it goes to 10%.
No deductions, no tax shelters, no write offs, no difference if you make the money here or abroad.

So the poor pays the rich man's property taxes, and does not get the federal tax write-off from the mortgage interest, right?

We all hear "half of the people don't pay any taxes", and everybody assumes that 1/2 is represented by the "poor".

That is a misconception that some people are counting on you making.

Again, looking at our discussion, the renter is paying the home owners property taxes in his rents, and also is not benefitting from the mortgage interest tax write-off on the federal taxes. In this situation, the home owner is getting the free ride, right?

I disagree there are plenty of charts and facts out there that say different. If it wasn't for the rich, USA would be in worse shape than we are now. A flat tax is plenty fair, no one should pay a higher rate, why penalize someone for succeeding? oh well.

I agree that the rich pay more, but I'd be suspect of averages. Romney only paid 15% effective taxes, because a majority of his income comes from capital gains.

Romney's taxes explained

Again, the laws are so convoluted, that about all you can say is that the rich typically pay more, but some may not.

So, if the rental owner was paying higher taxes, then wouldn't that be passed on? If his tax was higher, he would charge more for rent, no? If that's the case, then (in this example) a lower tax bill benefits the property owner and the renter, right?

i opened this thread and made it through about 7-8 posts and couldn't believe that people are defending what he said. it was foolish and i'm sure his handlers are pissed and the spin will no doubt begin with the usual (media) suspects trying vigorously to cover his ass.

he just spit in the face of all of the hard working people who have busted their collective asses to make something of themselves IN SPITE of government efforts to make it as hard as possible.

gov't doesn't build fuckin' roads, they pay for roads to be built by contractors with OUR MONEY! we built those fucking roads in spite of the gov't putting the money that is supposed to be allocated toward road construction into the general fund to be pissed away (hello toll roads).

also, everyone has the same access to the roads...some choose to get out there and travel them every day to make a living and others chose to sit on their fat asses.

what a bunch of fucking garbage that our gov't has to drive a wedge between people who give a shit, and people who just collect shit...what a joke we have become.

In a perfect world, yes. But most people are looking for ways to increase thier margins.

If Homeowner A gets a reduced tax bill, does that necessarily mean he is going to pass that savings on to Renter B, or his Homeowner A going to keep the rents the same, and look to put a couple of more bucks in his own wallet?

I am pretty sure we know how 95% of most renters are going to act.

Also think of your local gas stations. When ever there is a global catastrophe in the production of gasoline, there is an IMMEDIATE rise in prices in the pumps, even though the gas that is in the tanks under ground are not affected by this sudden catastrophe.

The reasoning is that the gas to replace the exisiting gas in the underground storage tanks will be more expensive.

But when all resources are up and running at full potential again, do we see that drastic drop in prices at the pump? No, of course we don't. Each station slowly lowers their prices as their competiing neighbor stations do, but they do it as slowly as possible, because that is nothing but a larger margain that they try to ride as long as they can.

Capitalism is not about passing your profits on to the next guy down the chain. Capitalism is about grabbing as much profit that you can, when you can.

Actually, today's political world is about the "sound bite", and convoluting any message that you can.

It is clear to most people that President Obama was NOT talking about individual business', but that we collectively (and SOCIALLY) give each other a hand. Nobody has done ANYTHING all by themselves.

It really sucks that we have a guy in office who is so talented at speaking that it takes several days for his staff ( I'm including oldfart in that group, of course) to help everyone explain what his words meant.

He said what he said and he meant it. He wants us all to think of the US in collectivists terms, just like he does.

Quit putting up Ron Paul' s shit oldfart-he really deserves more than you.

The "look at me I'm so smart, i did all this myself" comment was the deal breaker, it was a shot at successful business men, it was a shot at Romney. His goal is to piss off the have nots enough to get them to vote. In his whole campaign it is all he has done is attack Romney, it's all he has, he can't bring up things like, bringing the country together, hope and change, transparent government. Remember when he said no law would be signed without the publc reviewing it for so many days first? Or what about the televising of all meetings and stuff? I could go on and on, it was all lies to get elected and the sheep are obviously deaf, blind and or stupid. He kept no promises not one. Now he gets up on stage reads his Telepromter making his smart ass comments that hold no water, he's a joke. I would have loved to see Ron Paul get it, but Old FArt turned the country against Ron Paul, all we have left is Mitt, thanks man.

For Christ sakes, you even repeated what he said (in context, one would presume) and hit the same BS, strawman points he did.

Poor Nacho imitation, lol, you didn't even convince yourself Brah.

There are a lot of wealthy, successful Americans who agree with me -- because they want to give something back.  They know they didn’t -- look, if you’ve been successful, you didn’t get there on your own.  You didn’t get there on your own.  I’m always struck by people who think, well, it must be because I was just so smart.  There are a lot of smart people out there.  It must be because I worked harder than everybody else.  Let me tell you something -- there are a whole bunch of hardworking people out there.  (Applause.)

If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help.  There was a great teacher somewhere in your life.  Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive.  Somebody invested in roads and bridges.  If you’ve got a business -- you didn’t build that.  Somebody else made that happen.  The Internet didn’t get invented on its own.  Government research created the Internet so that all the companies could make money off the Internet.

The point is, is that when we succeed, we succeed because of our individual initiative, but also because we do things together.  There are some things, just like fighting fires, we don’t do on our own.  I mean, imagine if everybody had their own fire service.  That would be a hard way to organize fighting fires.

Obama is going after votes, his every move is to get votes, he has proven time and time again he will sell this countries would for a vote. Damn shame his is throwing hard working honest business owners under the bus. They are our only hope, they generate more taxes, they hire workers, unreal. The Internet was invented to share data! What a loon.
7/19/2012 7:17pm
2005-12-08: The Internet evolved from ARPANET (Advanced Research Projects Agency Network), an effort supported by the United States Department of Defense. The developers of ARPANET wanted to make communication between separate computer systems at various universities and research laboratories more convenient. See also Who invented the Internet? and Wikipedia's ARPANET entry.

Obama word for word......"Government research created the Internet so that all the companies could make money off the Internet."

Who has said that they did it ALL BY THEMSELVES without benefit of roads, teachers or telephones?
What our president is trying to point out is, that because of that, successful entrepreneurs need to pay large amounts of taxes (50% of their income might be "fair") so others (some who pay no taxes at all) can benefit, via the government.

Get a clue people.

Did he earn his title of President of the United States of America or did "someone else" make that happen?

This is what is called a win, win. Obama hurts his chances in November by his own hand and all of his supporters (and secret admirers) on this board are upset. Now the reason they are upset is they know this is true or they would not be so. Excellent.
