There are a couple of guys that were very fast back in the mid 80's... Vince Devain was one of them. Mouse Mccoy too. He was the rider in the documentary of the Baja 1000. Both of those guys were fast. Jason Langsford, Lowell Thompson, RIck Simmet, Keith Turpin.. Lots of fast guys that never made it on the big level.

Yeah, the Mouse, DeVane; Thompson was another with the Team Green rides and a ton of promise and nothing to show. Too bad. Mouse had a moment or two in Pro; DeVane.....
Turpin was a Team Suzuki 125 National when Donny Schmit was if my memory's correct...I know Turpin had one, maybe two seasons out of the box van....Seemed a third guy rode 125 RM's; can't remember his name; Think Holland/Kehoe already went to other teams; Honda I believe.
Langsford was a pretty decent top 15-20 125 Pro from what I remember...Seemed he did SX better.
Simmet was another fast mini guy that didn't seem to do anything in the pro ranks.
Got a good memory naming those guys...I remember each and every one....guys like you and the rest jog my old memory banks; those were some good days too; bikes getting better and still having places to ride real close to home....
Too bad for 'em all. Turpin, Langsford did the best; while Mouse maybe could've been real good...Lowell Thompson I thought would be something; maybe got hurt like that Denis kid(also Team Green) and Vlatch.

Thanks for the post and memories all,
Andy Moto

Yeah, I thought so.....that's why I wrote SX; not sure if AX had started by then; Langsford was a top guy for a bit doing those Kidd arenacrosses. You're right..Isn't he from your neck of the woods or maybe a Texan?

Yes, Jason was an AX specialist, but he also finished 6th (?) at the 1989 Dallas 125 SX, and almost won the first moto at the 1988 San Antonio National.

Yeah, he had his best successes in AX, but did decently in SX/MX as well. Seems to me he rode Yamaha's a lot....But I'm not Mr. Memory..Except back in BobbyM's heyday.
Heck, I wish I were as fast as him let alone a 2nd in a National moto.

Thanks for the tip...JL,Jr. Be cool if he makes it.

Guess Kenny Keylon's kid is doing hecka well. Didn't even know his kid Kyle was that good. Never remember him being a "mini-star". He must be tall and maybe big to be on the 450's and have some pretty darn good motos.

Tichenor was the man. He and Vince Devane used to have some of the most knock down drag out battles in the 80 class that I have ever seen. Ronnie did pretty well for himself in Japan and Vince went fast no matter how long he stayed off of the bike. That was Vince's main problem he really didn't like to train. He would rather go fishing but he was one of the most naturally gifted riders I ever saw throw a leg over a bike. He is currently teaching schools in central Florida and he still seriously hauls.

Yeah, Tichenor was the 3rd 125 Suzuki Factory rider and he was good. Give Gorkat61 the Final Jeopardy answer that's correct.

I bet DeVane still hauls the mail. Those naturals.....

There is another guy that probalbly nobody has mentioned. He raced with kehoe and holland on 80's back in the day. Not quite as fast as those two , but better than everybody else at that time........He was one of the first guys kawi sponsered to ride their new 80...Sam Storer.......I have a picture of Golden State race that my mom took that has holland, kehoe, lechien, storer, bobby moore, troy blake, all in the first turn. Really kewl old pic.. One guy that would have killed in the big bikes is Bruce Bunch. That guy had more talent than any of them. To bad he was killed in Ponca. RIck Hemme and kYle flemming also. THat was a bad day. I can't believe I forgot about him. He definately would have been something on big bikes. He had talent like Bubba does. INsanely talented

Remember that tragedy when Bunch, Hemme and Fleming were gone. Never to be forgotten; keeping their memories alive.

I have to take up for Mouse. He didnt make it as a pro becouse he didnt want to be a pro. He was just tired of racing, not that he was not dedicated. He was off for 2 years came to the World Minis on a borrowed year old DMC kx and owned the pro class against heavy comp. Mouse still hauls and he never tired of training, just riding.

I was at a saddleback saturday just before Bruce Bunch left for Ponca, he was so excited to move up and had a factory ride waiting. He destroyed the 125 ints and cought and passed the 125 pros, and anyone that knows Saddleback saturdays knows the pros all moved. The guy driving sponsered me at the time and he was messed up in the head.

I also remember seeing Sam Storer at Indian Dunes on the first uni-trac kx 80. I was racing Hondas at the time and had a CR80 that was trick, he pulled up next to me and made my bike look like a 60, that thing was trick.

[quote="ted":10khk3vm]how about jason schultz? or some ok tex local pros, dennis daft, carrolrichardson, clay hoenshell....[/quote:10khk3vm]

Jason was fast and had a couple of hot twin sisters. One hooked up with Lechein for a while. I woke up with one of them in my bed at South Padre one spring break. Never figured out exactly how that happened. I spent all of 1981 chasing Carroll Richardson around as 125 intermediates. I only beat him once, at the Conroe round of the GNC Texas Series. Hoenshell, at 45, still hauls the mail. Up until this year he won 14 straight State cross country titles in the pro class. He finally lost it this year to Charlie Bogard.

saturday saddleback was killer. 30min motos riding with all kinds of different classes.. Those were the days. I remember riding 80's and having to run with big bikes all the time. Then getting togo's on the way home. Yeah bruce bunch was like your average 80 intermediate and then just exploded into something else. Kind like MC did. I remember racing saturday saddleback with all the guys Chris taylor, Todd Cambell, Tracy Meeks, Mike Healy, and so many others Robbie Gordon, wade bassett. That was an unbeliveable time in MX.

Your last sentence says it all...Unbelievable time in MX for sure. Too bad it doesn't seem like it will ever be that way again.

An actual Charlie Bogard sighting....another that had all this promise of a top pro...Yeah, I still read about Hoenshell racing CC and winning every yr it seemed. Didn't pay attention much last two yrs. I know Bogard did some AX's for a bit..Maybe Bogard has found a new discipline, like Bobby Bonds from SoCal; riding CC/HS's.

Does anyone remember remember from back in the late 70's early 80's one of the fastest Kawasaki riders out of Georgia, by the name of Keith Turpin?

I have many old school pics of my own, that I am willing to share.

What about other mini stars like: Brian McElroy, Garrett Clayer, Eric Yarnell, Jimmy Howard, Vince Devane?

Man looking back on the glory days is pretty cool. Thanks guys. The 70's and 80's were the most interesting years, as far as I am concerned. We still can't take anything away from the new greats!!!

If you go to page 2 of the thread, we discussed Turpin and his being w/Team Suzuki with Donny Schmit and Ronnie Tichenor in the 80's. FYI..Post the pics; Im sure we'd like to see them....We also talked about DeVane and others...The list keeps getting longer and longer.....You guys got good memories.
The first "mini"; really 100cc guy in the '70's from Nor Cal is Donnie Cantaloupi that I remember. As far as the 80 class, Casey Johnson, Tallon Vohland, Terry Bostard, Steve Lamson a few that I remember being dasterdly fast. Casey had a brother Jason Johnson that had more natural talent than Casey, but didn't seem to be really serious about MX; he had the looks and the chicks.

mr50- is that Bader next to you in the center?.....I still can't recognize you, but will try and figure out.

Did you come up with anything on the other names that I listed earlier? The picture was taken in Orlando Motocross Track in 1983.
