YZ465 Kickstarter prices

Edited Date/Time 7/11/2012 8:24am
Why does a bike worth just a fist full of coins one day suddenly have to go through the roof the next day. Supply and demand, I guess.
I had an 81 YZ465 sitting in my mothers shed, since 1981, bits were taken from it for other projects, or to save buying replacement parts at the time I was a kid racing on a shoestring budget. I have resurrected the bike and raced it, now want to sell it, and make some money I may add.
I need a kickstart though. I can get a new one for 10% of what the bike cost new, or breakers have them for about 5% of what the bike cost new.
That's my rant over, I should not be a hypocrite as I will sell the bike for more than four times what it cost, but have spent as much as the bike cost on it to restore it. The current kickstart on my bike is of a YZ250f but I want a YZ465 item as the bike is original other than the hidden bits like modified suspension, rebore, new big end and a hand made exhaust pipe.
Here is the next issue, I am in the UK, and postage added to the price will nearly double the cost. I bet ten years ago complete barn finds changed hands for less than the price of a kickstart.
I even made a website for the bike, take a tour www.yz465.info to see how deep I went into the bike.
If you have a kickstart at a sensible price, I would love to hear from you.

you guys did a fantastic job on that bike
my brother is just starting a project on the same bike
would a yz 490 kick starter fit ?

Thanks for your comments, yes a 490 kickstart will fit, they had a slightly different bend in the second generation 490 kickstarts, but they still fit if you know of one at a fair price.
If your brother needs any help, just ask, I learnt a lot during this project of suppliers, alternative fitments etc. Ask him to send a picture to me via my project site, I will post them on the friends projects page.
Thanks
Rob

Not familiar with the 465's, but try pricing a decent 78-80 CR250 kicker as well.

Almost every old bike has a one or two bits that for some reason are ridiculous. Usually because the design sucked somehow and it was a high turnover consumable unique to the bike for a year or two.

Your bike looks terrific. Love the white YZ's from that era. Good stuff.

That's a good idea, thanks. I have a pal with a rocket and a shed full of bits. I rebuilt his Mugen 360 for him, but cant remember the kickstart arrangement, I have a feeling it was a left hand side kicker?. Always worth a look, and I agree with your comment, some parts are just overpriced and every model has one or two!
I hoped to find a charitable new friend with one gathering dust in his garage, there must be thousands out there going begging for a good new home.

Sorry, didn't mean to suggest it would work on a 465. Just commiserating. Not unusual to see a decent cr kicker go for $100-$200. Who knows for NOS. It's just how it goes.

I had a thought! rare admittedly, but think it is worth sharing as people seem interested, we can share our wisdom of what fits what.
The YZ has had two different kickstarts on which both work.
2010 YZ250F and KTM 450 02-12

Both these are aluminium kickstarts, I snapped the KTM item, possibly as the aluminium hits the footrest in a weak point.
Anybody have experience of any others that fit, preferably steel ones?

Killer bike ! I put kickstarter off my '87 YZ490 on mine and worked great. I also put one off a YZ426F , '01 IIRC, just need to do a little shaving with a drimmel and it will work fine and looks "Works" as well.

Hi Bultokid
Thanks for your suggestion, I tried a 426 item and it was too big on the eye, perhaps a different model though, I can't understand your suggestion 01 IIRC ?
Just for a bit of amusement I was offered a bulto recently as a loan bike to race, all original but needs plenty hours and love

If you happen to find the original kick starter to the 465, I believe I have an NOS boot that covers the the spring / detent area.
4V4.

That is kind of you thanks. I doubt I will ever see it again, I loaned it to a Pal in about 1985, he killed himself in about 1989. I don't know what happened to his bike and feel it inappropriate to ask his father if he kept his late son's bike, then the explaining about the kickstart being mine will be a bit sticky. It all sounds a bit like one 'I need to take on the chin'! One day soon, one will turn up.

I went on the site, it wont let me register, I tried upper case, lower case, spaced letters, it must be just me!
A guy is selling a whole load of the stuff I need, but I simply cannot afford it. I wanted to see if he would sell a kickstart, if you have a registration, would you ask the question please, and how much he would want. It is listed as Ad # 3197738
I think I need to know if he will sell before I even think about getting money to him

Kicker is the same as the 81 YZ250 isn't it? Looks the same comparing between my 81 250 and 465. Spare one in the parts bin, complete but a little sloppy on the pivot but I'm betting a junior machinist could bush it up nicely. Gotta mail something to Australia that I've been putting off too long, might as well mail this at the same time if you need it. Let me know.

Hi Newman,
Thanks, that sounds fantastic, how much would you be willing to part with it for? On a spares list I have they are the same part number for both the 250 and 465 of 1980 and 1981 so let me know the price you want for it, and if we agree, we can liaise privately for me to transfer some money for the part and its shipping. Shame I am in the UK because if we agree terms, it could go in the same package as what you are sending to Oz.
This is my best news today so far!

Price? Just pay the freight (since you are across the pond) and return the favor to someone else that needs something. Seems to work for me, I've been the recipient of a few things donated here over the years. I'll ship it your way and let you know how much.

That is a fantastic gesture thanks. I think we must have walked similar paths as I have raced on favours for years as a kid, then later as a sponsored rider, gave my kit to charitable schools who simply could not afford up to date safety equipment of their own. Now as a virtually retired racer, and keen hobbyist, I still rebuild the schools bikes for them without charge to keep them going. Here is the tragic bit! I lost my own job, although hopefully will start elsewhere soon, hence your kind gesture has come at the most welcome of times.
Drop me a line at my own email address, notetorobin@gmail.com and I will forward my home address.
Thank you so much.
