I assure you guys MX Sports is dealing with this. But there is a level of personal responsibility too -- you don't cross the highway at rush hour, whether you are a photographer or not. What happened here was a very unfortunate lapse of judgement by someone who really does know better, but made a mistake that has had huge effect on a lot of other people, including James Stewart, and now other photographers....

I remember at the 1993 Budds Creek 250 GP a local news photographer decided to stand in the first turn and got drilled by Jeff Stanton, who had won something like three straight USGP races to that point. It knocked Jeff down and ruined his day. All of the rest of us photographers, along with the guy who got hit, were told to stay off the track.

All of the photographers were told to stay off the track at Thunder Valley too, and most of then obliged the request. This guy did not, and it had a terrible ripple effect. I am not sure how it's going to turn out -- a motocross track is a tough place to shoot, and unlike football, baseball or basketball, it impossible to just be on the outside the whole time and make good photos. So the personal responsibility thing comes into play, and it was played badly in Colorado....

No one has answered the question. Who is Moran? I heard he shows up to races and posts a lot on this board but I have not met him. Anyone know this guy?

As for "certain dads on the infield" it's hard for Troy Dungey or Tony Alessi or Big James Stewart to watch from public grandstands and not get bothered a lot. They all play an integral part of their son's racing program and are also well-known in racing circles, so they get stopped a lot for photos, autographs, well-wishes and more.

We have special zones set up for rider families and all, but they want the ability to follow their son throughout the day. So it's up to their team to give them one of the all-access passes they get.

Correct.

Big James and I had a discussion at the end of the second 250 moto that included him wagging his finger and giving me a, "Y'all photographers..." That was after he'd reported another photographer for crossing the track.

After I suggested that he not lump us all together, and that if I cross the track I want enough visibility and gap between riders that I can do it at a leisurely stroll, he agreed...so that there was extra time in case I stumbled. We both chuckled at that.

When we were done talking? He walked across the track back to the pits...
Must kinda suck being so pro-Stewart through your site and then getting the finger wagging from his Dad due to some idiot crossing the track.

If i was 'Big' James I'd be buying you a drink for clipping/warning anyone who isn't nut hugging the last couple of years, not 'wagging' the finger due to the actions of someone else. Nice to know your efforts have been appreciated though hey...

Why all the secrecy in releasing a name? Does anyone really think someone will hurt this Moran? Will we ever know? Has his credential been pulled? Will he be crossing a track near you anytime soon? Inquiring minds want To know.

I assumed part of it was in jest, and part of it was serious. Either way, I didn't take it personally.

It's also not a matter of being pro- or anti- anyone. We tend to cover the riders that people are most interested in.

No secrecy on my end. I don't know the guy.

I will say, however, that the bigfoot photo made me laugh.

Define why you think it's a big secret? I don't think it's any mystery...much less a big one. Or is it because there hasn't been a press release, wanted poster, or his name in an article?

I couldn't tell you the name of half the American guys in the press room on any given weekend, much less the name of foreign press. I assume it's the same for much of the rest of the guys in there.

Just because of past things like this getting swept under the rug. If this was a guy in bounds and hit by a WR in an nfl game your damn sure his name would have been released to the public. It makes our sport look very unprofessional. Not that it is.

I don't think it matters who it is. It's cautionary tale about being aware of the situation and acting accordingly, even if you're in a hurry. No photographers ever want to be the story. And I think there's a difference between making a mistake, which anyone can do with a lapse, and fundamentally lacking judgment. This sounds like it was a case of the former, because the latter group (like the guy you caught at the start at Hangtown Gibby) don't seem to last.

And, after watching the second moto broadcasts, I think it's worth paying attention to where the TV cameras are as well as the riders (riders first, though!!)

It's sad, all the name calling here. It's a rather mild situation, this track crossing. A bad choice, not criminal.
And James and every other rider regularly deal with more urgent distractions from other riders, (mistakes, crashes, etc), without crashing.

People here are just always looking for an excuse to tee off on someone.

In your opinion it is mild, that doesn't mean it is in the same for others. You play it down, others will play it up.

I could be wrong but you seem to be looking for an excuse to voice your opinion that it was James' and only Jame's fault.

I have confidence in the proper beat down being given by the proper authorities. Don't think there's any need for an Interweb induced lynching from releasing a name.

does anyone remember when someone crossed in front of REYNARD at High Point. I think it was a flagger

FYI Retired, I believe a Dirt Digger ATV and Reynard collided with each other at Hangtown when he was privateering.

Yea, and the flagger was riding an ATV at the time...

The Brazilian dude made a supremely dumb move by crossing the track there for sure, but only James really knows if it lead to his crash.

I think everyone that's normally down on the track shooting expects some big changes beginning at High Point...

Bet you would see it different if you were trying to make money, satisfy sponsors and win a race and someone runs in front of you, distracts you and possibly takes you out of the season. If it is your mistake that is one thing, but someone being where they ought not to be causing this problem for you. It would be quite different. Name calling is lame, agreed, by downplaying what happened is almost worse.

The Photog's name IS NOT an issue: the conduct IS & it should be addressed by the Sanctioning Body & Promoters @ the next event...Where they may or may not have a Photog/Press meeting...

At which they may pass out the NEW PHOTO PASSES/CREDENTIALS...
(Or Not passing them to a certain individual, as the case may be...?)

I'm jus' hopin'...

Post a reply to: So who was the moran...
