So Im looking through the pics on Racer X of JS7 bike at freestone and his front numberplate has a strap on each side going over the bar pad. Any idea what the purpose of the 2nd one is? I thought they were so the front brake line wouldnt get caught behind it but what is the second one for?

Bar pads and # plates are expensive! They don't want either coming off. Is it sad I started zip tying my bar pads on after I lost one and found out that they were like $12.

Sometimes an honest answer is hard to come by in this place, I saw that and was wondering the same thing, I 've always cut mine off with a razor blade, Think it looks a lot cleaner !!!!

Mettys bike has it also they must have snagged the front brake line or throttle cables on that side at one time.

That's one of the dumbest things a guy can do to his bike.

Just wait until that one time your throttle or brake cable gets stuck behind the plate and things go bad...

I'll just have to wait for it then, Don't have to worry bout the throttle cable though, never ran one in front of plate !!!

always wondered what that strap was for... but I dont see how throttle cable can get stuck behind plate cause it is behind the plate already.

I've never had that problem on a KTM, and no modern KTM has ever had that strap. I don't know Jap bikes that well, I've just always assumed that's how they keep they number plate on, as the KTM's have a bolt in the center top portion of the plate.

When I started racing in 2000, I rode a 1985 RM80. It had drum brakes, so the front brake was cable operated (as opposed to hydraulic on a modern bike). When we first got the bike it didn't have a front number plate on it. One day when I was riding, the cable caught on one of the fork mount bolts on the triple clamp and jammed the brake on, causing a crash. To this day I have never cut the tether of a plate because of the risk of the line catching on something when the forks compress. If the brake line on a modern bike (with hydraulic disc brakes) caught on something you might get away with it, unless it stretched it and broke it or cut a hole in it or something, leaving you with no brake at all.

I would also be interested to know why the Suzuki team are doing this. I guess they have had an issue with something catching at some point.

I can tell you from personal experience what can happen when you DON'T have the strap. When you front forks compress (landing a jump for instance) the front of the bike including the plate goes down toward the ground, the front brake line is not fixed, so the loop that is in front of the plate is now above the plate - when the strap is not there, that loop can go behind the plate - then when the front end (and the plate) come back up, the brake line can be broken = no front brakes!
I probably didn't explain very clearly....but trust me - don't remove the strap.

Looks like the Dunge doesn't have it and neither does Rv, does this give James some sort of an advantage lol?
