ive been asking this question about only top 20 scoring points for years, like ive said as a racer when you are anywhere outside the top 20 you start thinking about saving energy for moto 2. and thats when you get a lot of guys pulling off and people always ask why do they do that, and honestly its tough after you ride your ass off to finish just outside the top 20 and people ask " what happend?" but back to the point. why cant 40th get 1 point and just go down from there same as they do from the top 20?

As for giving points from 21st to 40th, there has been a lot of discussion about that lately. I hope we can come up with a good solution (maybe up to 30th?) but it's hard to change about 40 years of scoring a certain way....

Anyone with suggestions, let's have them.

Not really... It's just like changing 40 year old underwear, one leg at a time.

Keep it like it is is my opinion too.

If any changes made my suggestion would be.
put a zero point in front of the same scoringscale from 21 and down.

Ex:

21 place 0,25 p
22 place 0,22 p
23 place 0,20 p
24 place 0,19 p
25 place 0,18 p
etc...

then u can earn a whole national point after some weekends.

Exactly, it's a pro sport, not a "everybody who enters wins a prize"

Just missed out on points? Good motivation to come back next week.

For the people who say its suppose to be hard or "its a pro sport not an everyone wins a prize sport" are we forgeting to even race the national you need to earn a pro lisence and then you need to qualify for the top 40( not easy). And then once you are in the main event ( top 40 pro in the united states) whats the harm in giving points out to all the riders? It would make all those riders from 21 to 40 have a reason to fight. I get that it should be hard but top 40 at a pro level is very hard. Also say you get 21st at every national and score no points and then some guy who never makes a main gets points at southwick or a mudfest.to me the guy who made more nationals is the better man not to mention that 450 sx points count its 2 different championships yet the same points towards a national number. Just as when most of the top riders got hurt in sx it gave new riders more hope and drive and itd do the same for the privateers in 21 to 40th. Its just funny to me for the people on here who act like 40th is a cake walk , are you the 40th best at whatever your job is?

Combine moto finish then divide by 2. Lowest score wins with the 2nd moto as a tie breaker. Then award points down to 40th so that a privateer will feel better about your pathetic payout because he at least got a point.
5/23/2012 3:59pm
I would take a combination of non-pro scoring (we all understand) and current pro-scoring with 2nd moto's being the tie breaker.

1 - 1 Finish = 2 points
1 - 10 Finish = 11 points
5 - 5 Finish = 10 points
The current system would have 1/1 finish placing 1st with 50 points , the 1/10 finish placed 2nd with 36points and the 5/5 finish placed 3rd with 32 points. We all grew up racing all our lives knowing a 5/5 finish (10 points) beats a 1/10 finish (11 points).

If you look at this past weekend you will see examples over and over wear a rider finishes 11th first moto and 30th the second moto (total 41 points) and beats a guy who finishes 19th and 15th (total 34 points) The rider who went 11/30 scored 10 points and the rider who went 19/15 scored 8 points.

I would add first and second motos together (like we always have and understand) and low man wins!! lowest combined points wins 1st, next wins 2nd, next wins 3rd and so on. Then award points accordingly... 25 for 1st, 24 for 2nd, 23 for 3rd.. and so on, then you could use all points (right now we do not use 24,23,21,19, or 17) and give points for the top 25.

I would also say I agree with all 40 riders receiving points, I have seen first hand riders out of the top 20 just give up knowing you do not score anything below 20th. This would also keep the points chase closer if a top rider went down and was out of the top 20 he would not loose as many points fighting for the championship.

21st-25th 3/4(.75) of a point.
26th-29th 1/2(.50) point.
30th-40th 1/4(.25) point.
or something like this.

I say it is great the way it is and doesn't need fixing.

Do you want to start awarding points to everybody that qualifies into the heats in Supercross too? That's the same scenario there, top 40 get a chance to earn points over 2 (or 3) races, and top 20 earn points

Or we could change to Olympic scoring for both individual races and the overall championship and the title would go to the rider with the lowest score (24 points for a perfect season). But IMO then it would make MX seem too much like golf, and the last thing I want is for MX to seem like golf...

layinbody31, that was just dumb man. its not about the number being 40 riders getting point s. its about every rider who qualifies for the main event earning points. SX takes 20 riders oh and guess what all the riders in the main event earn points. not just the top 10. so since mx format is different taking 40 guys to the main all 40 should earn points. crazy to think that HALF of the riders dont earn points towards a championship series that they just put their heart into two 35 min motos

Sorry to contradict, but it wasn't dumb at all IMO. In Supercross, 40 riders start, and 20 EARN their way to scoring points.

In MX it is the same way. It's just that while in Supercross you only get one main chance for 8 laps to place 1-9 and EARN your way into the top 20 so you can earn points (and another chance for 6 laps to make it into the top 2, which is even harder), whereas in MX you get 2 chances at 35 minutes each to earn points. Much more opportunity to gain points in MX, and therefore even that much more justifiable why only the top 20 earn points.

If everybody below the top 20 earned 1 or 2 points, what would be the incentive to increase your position in the race?

You cant compare the way they run sx to mx its 2 complete.diff races, shouldnt even earn points for eachother. Sx should have its own points and mx should have its own but thats another debate. The thing is what harm is there in the guys getting points for 21 to 40. Like i keep saying you would see more battles within the entire field. It wouldntbmake getting a top 20 less rewarding it would just make racing more competitive for the entire 40

How long did it take to change racing from Sunday to saturday? How long did it take to change the numbering system? How long did it take to outlaw paddle tires? How long did it take to remove the claiming rule from the rulebook? Compare the the rulebook used in 1975 with the rulebook used in 2012. Was every rule change that difficult or was there some powerful pressure exerted from outside the AMA and now MXSports? If it only affects the have-nots, there won't be any changes no matter how sensible or fair it might seem.

Heck give everyone who tried to qualify for the National a point because they had to drive to the race and buy a license. Or just leave it alone please.

I'm not one of those guys who thinks everyone deserves a trophy. I am one who thinks if your a professional motocross racer and your in a professional race, you should get points. You have made it to the top, and then your told you have to finish 20th or higher to get one single point? Plus wouldn't it look better if your a privateer looking for sponsorship if you could take your 21st finishing posistion and show it to a potential sponsor? 21st out of 40 isn't to shabby, you should be rewarded with points.

I like the idea of adding more points to the championship. Holeshot is a good one, maybe fastest lap of the race? Dont get carried away with it, but there are some things you could do to kinda of make the series more interesting as it gets later in the series.

40 years is a long time to go without changing the points, if there is a better way. Worth exploring anyway

Timed qualifying and the number system are higher up on my list though than changing scoring.

Oh and the overall could be worth a few extra points as well, we all talk about who got the overall, but you really dont get anything for it.

Leave it as it is. Imagine last year when Dungey ran out of gas. Because he didn't finish he would get zero points. Reed who won that race would have received more than 25 points. Then it's even harder to comeback once you had a DNF (like a mechanical failure). Somebody could be champion because he didn't had a DNF ...

Hey Douchbag, if you have a dnf, there would be more ways to score points, therfore you have more opprotunity to come back from some bad races.
