I guess times have changed. Back when it was the Hang Ten USGP at Carlsbad, we couldn't wait to see the European riders and their factory bikes.
I 'spose now it's probably due to the American's rise to the top of the heap, repeated drubbings of the GP guys at the MXoN, and lack of top Americans racing at Glen Helen. While the GP riders are a good show on their own, I suspect many American fans felt like they were getting a second-rate show, and that was reflected in the attendance.

Youthstream learned a lesson, now they will fix it by taking their events to the right market.
(The Gonzalez,Perez,Ramirez,Lopez,Garcias and so on...but on the other side of the Border)
If they don't for this it's because nobody heard.
I *think* there is some sort of war of words going on between Searle and Herlings at the moment but I'm not sure. The GP media has been slow to exploit this. This is the sort of thing Americans like to see.
The Michael Leib story is good. It's a start. Americans need to know more behind the scenes stuff. They need to see a Euro twitter war, they need to see a GP guy roll a rental car, impersonate a cop, get arrested for turning a Mountain Dew can into a bong, make a funny video of themself (ala JT$).
Maybe this is a bad analogy but the AMA Nationals can sometimes be a Silvio Berlusconi while the GPs are always an Angela Merkel. One is entertaining and fun, the other is prestigious and boring.
Personally I can honestly say I look forward to seeing a GP just as much as an AMA National, and certainly more than a SX with half the top competitors missing. However for any title chase to become interesting you have to get to know the people. And while the GP riders have gradually become more well known over the years, most Americans just aren't really interested in picking it up because, to be blunt, deep down they don't think the riders are as good. But regardless, as I said you need to know the people to really get invested in the championship storyline. I guess it's a bit of a soap opera really.
Anyway I hope the GP of Mexico goes well, I look forward to seeing what the track's going to be like and all that. Hopefully we get some more great racing. I wonder what time it'll be on in the UK.
