One thing for sure...it can't be worse than it was at the USGP.

I guess times have changed. Back when it was the Hang Ten USGP at Carlsbad, we couldn't wait to see the European riders and their factory bikes.

I 'spose now it's probably due to the American's rise to the top of the heap, repeated drubbings of the GP guys at the MXoN, and lack of top Americans racing at Glen Helen. While the GP riders are a good show on their own, I suspect many American fans felt like they were getting a second-rate show, and that was reflected in the attendance.

The people in Mexico will typically turn out for any type of MX racing. If it does bad then Youthstream simply sucks at marketing.

You forgot to add that it is hard to get people to show for a series that isn't on TV here and is barely covered in the US moto media. Add high ticket prices and I believe rain the last time around and you get low attendance.

Right....Mexicans are not as selective as US citizens...(as you imply) ..but as long as it doesnt interfere with there siesta(as I remember an idiot saying) everything will be a success.
Youthstream learned a lesson, now they will fix it by taking their events to the right market.
(The Gonzalez,Perez,Ramirez,Lopez,Garcias and so on...but on the other side of the Border)

Living in El Paso I'm not sure I've ever been to a race that had a bad turnout in Mexico. Even when they would do the local races in Juarez they'd turn out in large numbers.

If they don't for this it's because nobody heard.

I have a theory about the lack of GP popularity in the USA. Americans like drama. Either some sort of "us vs them" thing, or some sort of TMZ style back story. Americans love it when a guy in a pick-up truck breaks the top 20 at a National. They love when two riders exchange jabs via twitter (Reed vs. Stewie). Americans love when a 40 something year old racer decides to show up at a national and gets a top ten (Dowd). They love a good storyline at the races. That's one reason why Matthes has been so successful in the media. It's certainly not his eloquent writing style. It's also why vitalmx is so popular.

I *think* there is some sort of war of words going on between Searle and Herlings at the moment but I'm not sure. The GP media has been slow to exploit this. This is the sort of thing Americans like to see.

The Michael Leib story is good. It's a start. Americans need to know more behind the scenes stuff. They need to see a Euro twitter war, they need to see a GP guy roll a rental car, impersonate a cop, get arrested for turning a Mountain Dew can into a bong, make a funny video of themself (ala JT$).

Maybe this is a bad analogy but the AMA Nationals can sometimes be a Silvio Berlusconi while the GPs are always an Angela Merkel. One is entertaining and fun, the other is prestigious and boring.

I partly agree.

Personally I can honestly say I look forward to seeing a GP just as much as an AMA National, and certainly more than a SX with half the top competitors missing. However for any title chase to become interesting you have to get to know the people. And while the GP riders have gradually become more well known over the years, most Americans just aren't really interested in picking it up because, to be blunt, deep down they don't think the riders are as good. But regardless, as I said you need to know the people to really get invested in the championship storyline. I guess it's a bit of a soap opera really.

Anyway I hope the GP of Mexico goes well, I look forward to seeing what the track's going to be like and all that. Hopefully we get some more great racing. I wonder what time it'll be on in the UK.

Bad news this morning at a lake about 30-40 minutes from the track. I'd be in lock down all weekend if I had the choice. There's a lot of places I'd rather be than that country right now.

Heard something about that on the news this morning here.

Hauling all that lot all the way to race in a 3rd world country would worry me a tad..

Sadly, that's so commonplace now that it barely makes the world news anymore. I lived down in Central Mexico for a long time and have traveled all over down there, but I won't be going back anytime soon. And I still cannot believe they are having a GP down there. Next year, Afghanistan?

Didn't hey have to shorten an ISDE by a day down there one year?

Of course, I was trying to be funny based on the Matthes vs the angry mechanic thing...
