Sorry dude. I don't think we are buying what you are selling.

I only posted to diffuse any legitimacy you might have had in your claim for the sake of a small shop that makes a few specialty motorcycles per year. They happen to be great products. Expensive... but great.

And as far as my riding abilities... next time you are in so cal hit me up... I don't believe I have a skill set to brag about on the internet... but I ride quite a bit.

I wouldn't ride that stock 500 for anything. But let the boy's at Service Honda work the bugs out of that beast, and I would gladly ride a piece of art.

In stock form, that bike is an accident waiting to happen.

Whats wrong with a stock KX or CR 500? I have had them both, great play bikes. Perfect play bikes really. No need to rev and power always at hand.

The power, and handling on both of these bikes are not user friendly. That is unless you like to lug a bike around the track.

The AF versions would be a much better bike.

Well jmar, when you spent your last dollar trying to beat your buddies 450. You'll be sorry knowing all you really had to do was buy a CR500. Even the STOCK CR500 can smoke the 450's. Yes the steel frame not just the CR500AF's.. When was the last time you have ridden a 500? The stock CR500 holds the line better in the corners han the CR500AF in my opinion. The CR500AF is lighter so it wants to climb out.. Find a newer CR500 like 1994-2001 taqke it for a few laps. Get used to then when you are ready race your buddies..

I would like to know did you have them both at the same time? If you did have you ever had a buddy get on one and drag them?

Can I ask you what bikes you own.? I sold my 2000 CR500 to a friend of mine. When I bought my S-H 2010 CR500AF. I would like to get it back.

I am coming up on 55, and I don't ride anymore. But I am well aware of how the old 500s handled, and the traits of their power delivery.

Are we talking about woods/desert/play riding here or MX. I found my AF conversion to turn much better on a track then a stock Cr500.

I also found the conversion to turn even more betterer with a 250 flywheel.

Well, I hate to start an argument but, If I new how to copy stuff on here I could show you that the CR500 does make more hp stock than the KX. The Cr has all mid and the KX is top so it will pull longer thats all. In every dyno sheet I have seen the CR always had more (stock) even if its 1 or 2 hp more. Just saying. But I love both these machines. I would like to ride the MAICO 500 Cross or even the ATK 700, Dirtbike mag May 2003 page 108.Woohoo Maico claims their 500 Cross makes 67hp. Motocross Action May 1999 page 92..Cool
I remember that Maico article in MXA. They also said "if you're wondering if that's measured at the crank or rear wheel, rest assured it's at the brochure." lol

The only 500 I've ever ridden was an 84 Honda back in the mid 80s. Last air cooled model I believe. I had a 125 at the time. It wasn't a pleasant experience, but I'd love to try a late 90s early 2000s CR.

I do feel that my CR500AF is a faster handling bike in the turns and everywhere else on the track. Its just when I was in a rut I would crawl out when getting on the gas to soon. It wants to wheelly out of it. I just have to get used to it. Maybe once I put Aj's ignition on it maybe it will help.

When I posted my intention was to start a debate about the authenticity of said advertisement's claim...doesn't seem like it was that far from reality!

And the numbers aren't that much better now, even after all these years of development.

Obviously the majority of mortal riders are not comfortable with more power...so the advancements have been in suspension. Which was the right choice. Then they focused on power delivery which also helped us all out quite a bit.

I highly doubt 221 pounds but maybe dry weight?

59HP is almost twice what my VW had - and about the same as my 82 GPz 550!!

I did have them at the same time. Looked good in the driveway. Sadly I no longer have the KX but I would buy one in a second. Drag race? Never did that. I can say though that anyone that has ridden a 500 there is no lag what so ever when you hit the gas. In fact the the first guy that came over to buy it took it for a ride came back with less "color". In think ha was a little new to the dirtbike thing as those 500 are not the devil many seem to make them out to be. The ZX12R, well that thing does go almost 100mph in first gear! And it has 6. The grip on the right is not so much a throttle but a rheostat that changes how fast you want the scenery to go by. With my wife on the back I can go nowhere past half throttle in the first few gears as the extra rear weight makes the front end climb no matter how far we lean forward. It's fun. Magazines do 1/4 mile times on 500's from time to time and if I recall they did high 12's? The ZX does high 9's. Now put street tires on the 500 and race it against the ZX in a tight mountain road and I think the 500 would win as the ZX is not really made to corner. Pushing left to go right is like doing a one arm push up. Tuuuuuuuuuurrrnnnnnn god damn it........................

I had a supermoto kit for my 500AF. The biker boyz in the twisties were super bummed when i would pass them on the outside of tight corners... Smile I could get that thing through the corners much faster than I could my R1 or my RC51.

under 60 mph the 500 could hang but any long straits and the street bikes start flying by...

No please don't leave it at that. By all means tell me who they were and I bet I can tell you why they broke.. Send me a message if you don't want to post their names. I have seen two of them break in half myself. One was a rider I do not know and the other is Seth Enslow when he did his distance jump. Just for the record Those frames wer also 2004 CRf450 frames. Service Honda corrected this by useing the 2005 CRf250 chassi. For those who do their own backyard builds I can not speak for them.. Wait I take that back I know of one other rider who broke his frame and again it was a 2004 CRF450 chassi..
Wrong-o. The triple clamps broke on Enslow's bike, not the frame.

Like I said, I've owned both bikes (more than a few) and the KX was faster, every time.

dont know why you would have to do the AF conversion.... seems KTM thinks CrMo is just fine.... I think a late model CR or KX 500 with the suspension tuned would be just fine on a track.... I think RJ, JMB, and Lechien would agree.... just sayin!!!

and before you ask... yes I have ridden a 500 on a MX track back in the day for more than 5 laps and I dont know what all the fuss is about really.... just lug it is 3rd and 4th... carry your momentum around corners and be smooth with the clutch and you are flyin!!!!

Sorry, I was wrong about Enslow's bike.. Thanks for correcting me.. I watched the crash again after you mentioned it. You say that the KX was faster everytime. So does that mean you actually ran them side by side? I do beleive the KX would have a little more overall speed Its just I think the CR would get there first.. I had my 1998 CR500 ported and polished, bored carb, Boysen rad valve and 14/50 gearing. I had my neighbor clock me with his radar gun. He is a State Trooper. He showed me the reading and it was 104mph. Yes I can back up that number with my CR500AF.

That's what I figured. Hey how did you like that 51? Always thought those bikes were really cool. Especially with the whine of the gear driven cams.

lol, we are talking about stock bikes aren't we? And where does mph come into the equation? You are all over the map son!

Yes I've run KXs and CRs side by side, many, many times. MX, fire roads, ice racing, even drag racing.
