Racing gets harder and harder each yr for me lately as I’ll be 54 in 4 months. 40 was no problem but @ 50 you really do hit the freaken wall.
I ache every day it seems, not sure if it’s from a lifetime of riding or just early stages of arthritis in my knees and ankles.
I think I could be happy just riding practice days (not sure) and wonder if I need a new 2013 to do that?
My Katoom has a lot of miles and I either need to tear it down (it’s got the OEM top end!) or upgrade to a new sweet ride.
As far as the OP, I have to say variety has kept me from burning out and keeps its fresh as I also streetride and jet-ski in the brutal summers in AZ.
But yea there is NUTHING like Moto on a nice loamy track.

How do you know how fast I am to make this judgement Bob? You have never seen me ride, even though I do admit to slowing down the last few yrs. If there is ANYONE who is 50+ and says racing Motocross is easy—I’d like to meet him. I do pretty good in my age bracket and can smoke all my buddies (for benchracing bragging rights) and most of all have FUN—which to me is the key to Life.
How much faster do I need to go to get your approval anyway? So much has changed in our sport since you raced competively. A 250 Novice could smoke you..
As Clint would say “A MAN HAS GOT TO KNOW HIS LIMITATIONS” something you obviously never figured out by your crash-prone short career. I try to ride/race @ about 85% and it's worked pretty good so far. Just two weeks ago there was no less than three old guys sent to the hospital--no thanks, I need my job & home. I’ve seen so many people come and go in this BRUTAL sport—I have lost count.
It was also a lot different for me as I didn’t have Daddy buying me new trick bikes and pushing me. I had to do it alone and even sneak new bikes into the garage yet you could never see the difference can you?
In fact I’m proud I’m still going, the fun and experiences I have had for 45 yrs or so are priceless and wouldn’t trade it for anything.
Here is a 50+ yr old version of a “Bubba Scrub” while winning the 40 Expert Class recently. Guess what—it was FUN, while you were on the couch fighting with people on the Interweb…. Hahaha

The only person who knows what to do is YOU. Coming here for answers is somewhat of a waste, because you need to do what's right for you. If you want to ride, ride. Want to retire, then do so. You might be back, or you might be back. Whatever you do, do it for the FUN. Life's too short not too. If you're a true Moto Junkie, you will keep riding or come back. If you don't, then look back upon a great chapter in your life. But every chapter has an ending, and a new beginning follows.
FYI, I'll be 50 in 2 months. Riding keeps me young.
