I have a question about powder coating aluminum frames that's been on my mind for quite some time..... Due to the extreme sensitivity of aluminum frames, per the rg3, rich taylor, and Ross maeda podcasts, does the heat treatment from the powder coating application process have ANY effect on the frame's characteristics at all or alter them.... Good or bad?

Just curious since I've been hearing some of these timers and engineers comment on even the slightest change completely changing the way the frame acts or reacts

Baking powdercoat is not enough heat to alter the metallurgy. The heat is merely hot enough to turn the powder to a liquid.

Most powdercoat ovens bake around 350 - 450 F for no more than 45 minutes and then they are allowed to gradually cool. This duration of heat exposure probably wouldn't even completely heat the AL frame all the way through. The frame probably wouldn't be any hotter than 300 F.

I took a metallurgy class in college and I definately know it takes more heat than that to start changing AL properties.

It's kind of an old wive's tale. Yes, one could easily change the metallurgy of the frame with heat, but the heat from the powdercoating isn't it. One would probably need 600-1000 F for several hours followed by a multi-hour cool down period to soften the AL. Or a rapid quench from this temp range would make the AL very hard, but brittle. I've seen several aluminum wheels on cars crack all the way across the spoke after powder coating. I don't think it's an old wives tale and has some truth to it.

Nobody ever said anything to me .... I just know that heat can affect metals and wondered if the heat from PC would make a difference. When teams were polishing frames and altering the way the frames work the ama put a stop to it and drilling a hole as small as 1/8" changes the frame I thought any amount of even marginal heat like 300* or more would change the way the frame flexed or rebounds from a flex....the rate of speed the frame reacts is what I was inquiring about.

So you would know that 6061 alum. can be heat treated at 330 for 4 hours right? When you do it for different amounts of times you anneal the aluminum. I had my powdercoated CR250 swingarm break in half this summer.

I think you should take a real metallurgy class because your temps for alum. are way off......also, seen a few mx wheels pretzel shaped within 1 ride dayafter powder coating...
