Having spent many a Friday night out at Sacramento Raceway Park from the 70's into the 90's I'd like to hear some stories about that venerable old track. Maybe even some of you remember the old West Capital Raceway nite motos. Or Oakdale. Lodi Cycle Bowl. Mammoth Bar (that's Bar, not Mountain!). Hollister. Carnegie in Livermore. And don't forget Altamont and Looney Larry! Placerville night races. Short track under the water tower at CalExpo. E Street and Riverfront. Little Oaki. Hurron, Dunlap and the Hanford Supercross near Fresno.Speaking of CalExpo, how abouit the first ever Supercross that Mike Goodwin promoted there back in 1971 or 1972 with Super Joe Einhorn's Evil-imitation jump/crash when he broke his wrist after over shooting the landing ramp and biting out in the gravel. Or Pacific Race Productions outdoor track at Sac Raceway in 1984. Wait, there's more. The White Rock track where they had an InterAMA race in 1969 or 1970.

Nuke...I remember them all.. It;s the price for being so Damned old

I had only one race at Mammoth Bar..although I wanted more..it was badass..The race was about 1976...You were probably there...We had a huge turnout and everybody loved the track...I remember Magoo was in fine form, as was Darryl....and Dean fell on his head. Danny was there too.
The main prob that we had was . there were a bunch of ittinerant gold dredgers squatted and in our way and they pissed me off, so I indiscreetly ran the track right through there camp area ..Shouldn't have done that...So they complained to the resident Pussified ranger and he decided that they were more important than a whole lot of kids having fun.

Those old races at West Cap were a blast and over the years Sac Raceway ran a fun program....Cheers

I remember the mammoth bar race. I think I even have a few photos that survived the fire of that race. Turner was on his kawasaki twin shocker or a KTM250 that day. or maybe that SWM! Seems like Lamson was there that day, as well. But he was still a Novice.Maybe even Brian Jodry. And wasn't Kamakazi on a white Husky? I remember the gold geeks, too. We need to revive the old school motos somehow. Retro rocks!

Hey Nuke,
I completely understand your sentiments...you know, back in the day ( overused comment ) we had so much freedom to go into a raw area, like Mammoth Bar, Lay out a track, and have a great event, with spectators everywhere watching the action and having a great time at the races. These days we're expected to stay behind the chain link fences and we don't have the kind of personal connection with the racers that we used to have. Those times are gone.... The Insurance won't insure a race for the promoters unless the track is completely secured....
Back when I was promoting races I honestly tried to make all my races "FUN" for the riders....That was my intent.and ,for the most part I think I accomplished that, Maybe that's what is missing, I haven't been to a race in D36 for a long time so I don't know how they"re doing it these days.
All I can say is MX will go on in some form......I do surely miss the grand old days!!!!

I remember most of the tracks that old Fred is talking about. I raced at West Capital Raceway, night races on Friday nights, bad lighting but lots of fun. Dixon in the summer time was all ways a dust bowl. Dirty Dion's dusty dixon dust bowl. Lot's of fun there. Talking about Sac Raceway, now there is some fun. I raced there when racing was racing. The expert classes were so much fun. Good to hear someone is talking about the good ole days.

Ha ha!! I raced at mammoth bar a few times. I believe Vasco Demello was the promoter. Rubberband start down by the river in the deep sand....I also raced in the SX at Cal Expo on amature day, stupid track !!! I think I was 125 novice then...As far as Sac rcwy, I basically grew up racing there on Fri nights. From Novice to Pro, Nuclear even mentioned my name a few times lol....I also rode that outdoor track at Sac rcwy out in the back, in fact here is a pic of a start in 84'

That is the 125 intermediate class, I'm #42....Were you there greg?

Good Times!!

Looney Larry, I was at a practice one evening and got to the start as the last bike was leaving. he told me i was too late and would have to wait an hr till the next start. i couldn't believe it, flipped him the bird and went back to my truck. looney Larry stops the whole practice gets everyone's attn. not a bike was running and says no one will ride till I come up to the mic and apologize to him. holy crap Looney was right. had alot of fun at that track tho. sac raceway some crazy announcer (lol) talked to my friends one eve and they tell him to call me Julio Bruce holy crap I'm just now shaking that nickname. lots of fun times at a bunch of them tracks

The night Jack Azevedo in 250 Pro got outta shape and launched him and his RM250 over the moto bowl fence into the stands and think he t-bone a fan or two. Think Ron remembers since he raced that night.

I hear that Fred! I was at Hangtown (Prairie City) one year sitting on the back of the Husky van talking with Danny LaPorte. Brad Lackey sits down on the other side of me, wow! The first 2 American world Champs and me the first American world chump. When's the last time that happened at a race you've attended? Also Fred your races were the best!
I've got hundreds of pictures at a lot of these tracks.

How about Plymouth. I saw some seriously great races there. Remember the Hangtown mud year that DT won the first moto on a BULTACO!

I remember racing Sac Raceway almost every Friday night. Raced Mammoth Bar once too. It was so hot that after the moto I jumped into the river. Good times.

I needed to read these posts now. Good memories of great times. How do we get caught up in all the drama these days? Sometimes some people can cloud your mind until a light comes back on....a fog light!
